Review of Missing

Missing (I) (2023)
6/10
Solid for a one-time viewing

I enjoyed the movie Searching, so I was immediately interested in a new movie made by the same people. It uses the same style of filmmaking with the entirety of the movie taking place on screens (computers, phones, security cameras). And this is another solid entry in this newer subgenre.

It's an interesting mystery with a story that goes in unexpected directions. But I wasn't as invested as I remember being with Searching. I also found a few flaws. I kept deducing information way before the protagonist.

And there is one big mistake early, on which the entire rest of the movie hinges. Even if you answer all the security questions, a customer service associate will never tell you the password. They will reset it for you. On top of that, even if you have the right password, if you log into a new device, there will likely be some kind of authentication.

Even with these flaws, I still had a decent time with this movie. I think I like Searching overall a bit better, but there is a story element later in Missing that keeps it on the same level as its predecessor. Also there are a couple of jokes I really enjoyed. One involved reCAPTCHA and the other was a jab at everyone's obsession with true crime.
