Review of Hustle

Hustle (1975)
8/10
Underrated Burt Reynolds cop flick
2 March 2024
After the success of The Longest Yard director Robert Aldridge and actor Burt Reynolds collaborated again on this film. Hustle is a gritty and absorbing neo noir. This film is driven more by dialogue and character development than action than the average 70's cop movie. Burt is excellent as a cynical cop that has a relationship with a French call girl that is also his live in girlfriend. He is on the case of a prostitute that would end up washed up on the beach in the opening scene of the film. This is a glimpse into his world and his relationship with his girlfriend. Morally, the characters in this film are in the grey area. Everyone is dirty to some degree or has character flaws. There is also a subtext to the film about corruption in American government and in society. Burt is really good in this role and has a great cast with Paul Winfield, Ben Johnson, Ernest Borgnine, Eddie Albert and French actress Catherine Deneuve as Burt's call in girlfriend. I thought this was a very good movie and my only complaint is that I am just discovering this film now.. Great flick!
