It lives!

Starting practically where Mary Shelley left off we have a female monster assembled from parts. However, the twist this time is not an homunculus of various convicted criminals from the scaffold but a baby in a fully formed female body.

The good doctor's experiment was observed in how quick progress was made, the first hour of the movie investigated sensual pleasures the second half explored the gaining of insight, wisdom and ultimately judgement. The movie hoped to explore all the elements that make up the human condition and perhaps suggest a more hopeful redemption.

To my mind I couldn't see much was new here in the basic story, the styling was inventive but nothing more than eclectic gothic Wes Anderson. It would be argued the sum of the derivation was unique in the way it was served up but I'm not so sure.

The acting was limiting, it seemed to sparkle only when we had Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef in the scene, it really was very good, but Mark Ruffalo, the sleazy opportunist, was just not horrible enough to be memorable. Now looking more closely at Emma Stone, it was a solid performance agreed but the demands of the role were nothing in comparison to Annette Benning in Nyad, I fear there is no Oscar here.

Overall I did enjoy it, but to suggest there is any shock value in nudity, in any form or scenario in 2024 is absurd, we all watched Games of Thones nigh on 13 years ago we are jaded. I'm giving this not more that a 6 outta 10 and that is mainly for the styling, and excellent camerawork.
