Italian War Drama with Claudia CARDINALE

Italian mini-series and film at the same time with Claudia Cardinale

There were also "amphibian films" in Italy in the 1980s. The term was coined by the legendary Bavaria producer Günter Rohrbach (*1928) from West Germany, who with "Das Boot" wanted to create a film that would work both as a feature film and as a mini-series on TV. Director Luigi Comencini did the same thing with "La storia" (1986), which he presented as a feature film at the Venice Film Festival, but which was shown in West Germany as a mini-series. The fact that the film was not shown in competition in Venice is said to have angered leading actress Claudia Cardinale. Not wrongly!

The Cardinale plays Ida Ramunda, a teacher from Rome who lives with her son Nino (Antonio Degli Schiavi) in the most impoverished conditions during the Second World War. One day Ida is raped by the German soldier Günther (Tobias Hoesl) and becomes unintentionally pregnant. But the time of horror is far from over...

This dramatic story was based on a novel by Elsa Morante from 1974. The script was written by the fantastic Suso Cecchi DÀmico (1914-2010), who was responsible for some great scripts in Italian film history. Francisco Rabal and Lambert Wilson also appear in other roles.
