The Martian (2015)
9/10
Great movie - 1 bad scene
2 May 2024
I have seen this multiple times and I'll continue to watch it. There's drama, humor, intrigue.

I like everything that happens on Mars and I like the Mindy Park character; how she sees that he's alive and her role in the movie was fascinating to me. I looked forward to her scenes. I also felt Jeff Daniels was good in this, because - while I know he's been in a lot of films - I mostly remember him from Pleasantville and Dumb and Dumber, and I thought he was dumb in that. So seeing him in a more dramatic role, I thought he did good.

The one part of the film they really could have done without was the character Rich, when he came in and did that whole corny scene that essentially was in reference to the free-return trajectory from Apollo 13 (slingshot around the moon). Donald Glover's character was not necessary. I typically fast-forward that scene any time I watch.

And one problem with the movie is when the Chinese help launch a rocket, nothing ever becomes of it. It's weird. They made it out to be a lifesaver of a mission, then it never dropped supplies, I guess. If it did, they didn't show it. They do show Mark eating a bowl of what looks to be oatmeal or something different, but yeah, what happened with that? Anyway, it's a nitpicky thing, but it's still bad writing, editing or something.

I do think if Mark's ever stranded on Mars again, maybe he'll think twice before drowning his potatoes in ketchup.
