Donnie Yen was always a solid performer, but it was the IP MAN films that put him over the top, gaining a fan base in the millions worldwide. And that was in spite of the fact that the earlier IP MAN films were better than the later ones -- which is counter-intuitive, but not unusual for the film industry. That said, the idea of casting Yen as an empathetic teacher in this TO SIR WITH LOVE/BLACKBOARD JUNGLE wannabee was a bad idea when conceived, and an even worse idea when executed. A better script would have helped. The attempts to integrate Yen's fighting skills are also unsatisfying. To manage the endless cliches, Donnie has to grin way through a scene way too often. Ugh!
