Once there was a heavy draft employee named Joe, who lived in a cold storage dispensary called a hash house, His bread pudding was dropped in front of him by the landlady's daughter, Effie. Joe's fellow-toilers regarded him as a mush-head because he stuck around over time. Joe got his promotion just when the wise Jimmies got the sidewalk. Effie looked to Joe like a million dollars' worth of woman. Joe looked to her like a bushel of oats, until he began to pull down at the works, then she and her maw suddenly fell to that fact that they were harboring a live one. Joe and Effie were married. Then one day the boss got the pip and Joe took the reins. Effie, now in for highbrow stuff, regarded Joe as a handicap to her career. She could not help compare him with a literary gink she worshiped, who advised her to unhitch from Joe and marry him. While such a sympathy party was being staged one night Joe trotted in on them. Effie erupted all. Joe told the literary guy to stop trembling and there would be no scandal. He induced him to get his locks shorn next day, then took him before Effie.
