In private life, Frank Lyman is known as a loving husband and devoted father; in reality he is a notorious crook known to his associates as "Gentleman George." For a long time Gentleman George worked alone, but when he made the acquaintance of a girl known as Jane Jones, the two did several jobs together. Gentleman George pretended to the girl that he was a single man and often gave her reason to believe he was in love with her. One day Jane sees Frank and a woman and a child come out of a swell mansion; learning that they are his wife and child, she returns to her room in a rage and prepares to leave. She writes Gentleman George a note upbraiding him for his faithlessness to his wife and accuses him of double-dealing in trying to win her affections. She packs up her belongings and, making a pile of the implements of her trade, leaves them on the table with her note. George comes before she leaves and resorts to force in an effort to make the girl continue as his partner. Eddie Sloan, an accomplice of the two who ardently admires Jane, comes in at that moment. In the struggle Jane has cut George's face with a knife and he is choking her when Eddie's arrival stops him. Eddie is anxious to beat up George for his treatment of Jane, and while he and Jane are arguing, George draws a pistol and tries to shoot her. Through Eddie's interference the bullet goes wild. Gentleman George's wife has come to the same apartment to see a dressmaker, and as she and her friend start out they hear the shot. When the door is opened Mrs. Lyman thinks she sees her husband, but her companion persuades her that she was mistaken. A short time later she returns to see if her husband could have been in that room. The crooks hear her and Jane, recognizing her as Gentleman George's wife, hides George in a closet before admitting the woman. Unable to find her husband, Mrs. Lyman leaves. Jane and Eddie leave George after telling him they hope they never see him again. Jane and Eddie go to California, and Jane makes the acquaintance of Miss Hoke--known as "Sunshine"--and her brother David. Sunshine is an invalid and takes a great liking to Jane. David has fallen in love with Jane. Eddie is still with Jane, and the whole city is disturbed by a number of successful burglaries, which the police are unable to trace. David declares his love for Jane, but she tells him that their paths lie wide apart. Gentleman George is stopping at the hotel and is recognized by Eddie one day in spite of his changed appearance. Eddie tells Jane of his arrival, and through a ruse she gets into his room. She starts to search the place, but she's interrupted by George's return. He realizes someone has been in his room and makes a search. Jane hides in a trunk; thinking George will not search again, she tries to force the drawers of a dresser. George hears the noise and returns in time to catch her. He draws a gun on Jane and threatens her with arrest. She dares him to turn her over to the officers and displays a miscellaneous assortment of burglary tools which she had concealed upon her person. George laughs at her collection and shows her a set of the latest things in the burglary line. Jane tells him that she is preparing to rob a hotel and finally persuades him to help her. At the opportune moment, she gives Eddie a signal and he rushes in and overpowers George. The morning papers are full of the capture of the notorious burglar Gentleman George, and lavishly praise well-known detective Alias Jane Jones, who had been trying to capture the capture for a long time. David and his sister read the news and she orders him to find the girl and bring her to receive congratulations. David is successful in locating Jane and brings her to the invalid sister. Before allowing Sunshine to congratulate Jane, David suggests that he have a few minutes' secluded talk with the girl, to which his sister smilingly agrees. When they return their happiness is evident: the lady detective will soon become David's wife.
