As a morality tale, this is pretty heavy handed. In 21 minutes the story is told of a woman named Lesbia, who has a summer flirtation with a young doctor, John Rance of the title. She then throws him over. Later his best friend returns from a tour of the world with his new wife, the very same Lesbia.
Despite the humor of having Norma's character named after the mother of all gay women, the story is heavy handed and the melodramatic narrative is not only highly unbelievable but the inevitable ending is rather quickly dismissed without any depth developing from what could have been a rather interesting dissection of a triangle.
The DVD print is deplorable - fuzzy and washed out. The title cards are only halfway on the screen - one can't read the right hand side or the bottom half. Still one can make out the story line.
Antonio Moreno is quite handsome in the lead role, resembling a young Louis Jordan. Twelve years later he starred opposite Garbo in her second American film, THE TEMPTRESS.
This is one 25 films Norma made in 1914.
