Simple and not exactly deep but entertaining
planktonrules7 August 2016
This is the sort of film you could easily imagine folks (especially kids) enjoying on a Saturday morning at the theater back in the day. While the film has very little depth to the plot, it is the sort of action film that would fit in nicely with the movie serial and B-western crowd.

A boy (Junior Coghlan) is sent to live with a crusty old sea captain. The old guy seems pretty nice EXCEPT he has a bizarre hatred for fliers...and his niece has fallen for one of them! But before the pair can elope, some baddies show up and try to steal the strongbox...and when they can't find it, they kidnap the girl! So, it's up to her brave fiancé and the boy to spring to the rescue.

The film has lots of wild stunts near the end and works well as a silent film. While it's characters are very thinly written, you don't really need a ton of depth to these folks in an action film...and this film is full of action and well choreographed stunts.

You can't keep a serial king down, but even so...

Warning: Spoilers
As might be expected from serial specialist Spencer Gordon Bennet, this one features some really good stunts. The milk wagon crash, though not one of the most spectacular, was still so unexpectedly thrilling, I jumped out of my chair. The aerial climax also repaid the somewhat leaden pace of the earlier scenes. Coghlan is okay as the boy, but Tom Keene really shines as the hero. On the other hand, Virginia Bradford is no great shakes as the heroine. She made no sound films at all, retiring from the screen after just one more movie, One Man Dog (1929). Tom Kennedy also makes little impression in a dramatic role. Although led by Maurice Black, the villains too come across as a rather innocuous lot.
