It is difficult o realise that Michael Powell would rise to the top of the British film industry when co writing and directing this quota quickie.It is based on a play and in fact it rather feels like watching from the stalls.A most uncinematic affair.All the usual tricks of quota quickies.Set ups involving all of the characters who will say lines thus avoiding the editing process.In fact at the end all of the characters are in the scene as if ready to take their bow at the end.Amongst actors who would go on to better things are Hermoine Badderley,Edward Chapman and Alan Napier.The story must have been a bit of a cliché when shown in 1930.Shaw,an aristocrat,marries Swinbourne,a dancer and from a working class background.He doesn't tell his mother till just before the outbreak of war in 1914.She has a baby and he is reported missing.He is still alive and returns home to find he is a father.Mother turns up too and is very forgiving.So all ends well and everyone is off to better things.
