satire on the purity leagues
malcolmgsw27 January 2007
This film was shown as part of the NFTs Quota Quickies season. It has a rather sensationalist title particularly when it is apparent from the film that most of the men are in their underwear and the women in bathing costumes. At the time this film was made there were many purity leagues in existence who thought it was their moral duty to send members to cinemas to view films and report back.In due course the league would prepare a report showing how salacious the films had been.In this film we have a rather prim woman who is shown as the secretary of the League for wearing more clothes! There are some enjoyable numbers feating June Seymour(see more)and her band and some rather broad humour. It is all over in a very quick 36 minutes.Very enjoyable

Promises Less Than It Delivers

Ken Douglas wishes to marry Betty Norman, but her father, Albert Raynor says not unless he earns lat least two thousand pounds a year. Douglas is a reporter. He gets an assignment to get a story on Sunville, where sun worshippers less clothes than perhaps they should. At the same time, Miss Norman visits the place, and her father also shows up to get the dirt, so to speak, on the lasivious goings on.

There's a lot of mildly risque music-hall banter going on, and an all-girl band. Alas for the smutty minded -- including me -- there's no sign of nudity; everyone wears bathing costumes, although there are a couple of brief shots of some dancers in skin-toned tight. The result is less amusing than a burlesque comedy routine.
