The St. Louis Kid (1934) Poster

James Cagney: Eddie Kennedy

Quotes

  • Ann Reid : You stupid numbskull, did you ever hear of sticking out your hand for a stop?

Eddie Kennedy : What're you trying to do, steal some gas out of our tank?

Ann Reid : Is that supposed to be funny?

Eddie Kennedy : Now look here sister...

Ann Reid : Don't sister me, if I was your sister I'd shoot myself.

Eddie Kennedy : Not a bad idea!

    Ann Reid : You insolent...

[CRACK! - slaps Eddie across the face, hard!]

Buck : Hey! You can't do that to my pal!

[CRACK! - slaps Buck even harder, she must be a lefty!]

    Eddie Kennedy : Hahahahaha!

[CRACK! - one more on Eddie for good measure!]

Eddie Kennedy : Oh, so you're one of those smacking dames are ya? Now come on, back that tin can off our truck! C'mon! Get out!

  • Buck : [after reading aloud from a book in a dull monotone]  Hey, what's this all about? It don't make sense.

Eddie Kennedy : It don't make sense the way you read it, you split-skull. It's all about the country, about the chickens and the cows, the people are happy and contented.

Buck : You really think the cows are contented?

Eddie Kennedy : Why shouldn't they be? They don't have to drive a truck for a living.

    Buck : Yeahh, that's right, they don't.

  • Messeldopp : [upon taking Eddie in the jail cell]  Mr. Richardson, this is Mr. Kennedy. Richardson's a horse doctor from Moline

Eddie Kennedy : How are you?

    [shakes his hand]

Richardson : I'll bet it was a woman got you into this!

Eddie Kennedy : Yeah - a woman had something to do with it. Why?

Richardson : I knew it! They're the scourge of the earth.

Eddie Kennedy : Oh. One of them put the bite on you?

Richardson : Women - tyrants, destroying the freedom of mankind.

Messeldopp : He's in for alimony.

Eddie Kennedy : Yeah - I got that.

Richardson : Why should I support a wife weighing 200 pounds? Have you any idea how much she eats?

Eddie Kennedy : No, I never met the lady.

Richardson : Ohh, it was a sad day when I asked her to be my wife.

Eddie Kennedy : Why'd ya do it?

Richardson : Well, she runs a boarding house and... I was behind with my bill.

Eddie Kennedy : Ah - real, real love.

    [laughs]

Eddie Kennedy : That's what I like to see.

  • Buck : [after drinking a big glass of milk]  Ahh. Not bad. They say milk is full of that alphabet stuff.

Eddie Kennedy : What do you mean, "alphabet"?

Buck : You know - A-B-C-D... vi-ta-mines. It gives ya strength.
