Most if not all viewers of this brief cartoon will be left wondering . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . "But what if the thunderstorm's lightning strikes the giant lightning rod umbrella twirling Betty's building in the sky?" Those exposed to GRAMPY'S INDOOR OUTING have every right to be shocked, perplexed and totally flabbergasted by the title character's felonious assault upon Public Order. This senile delinquent's Second Childhood comes with a desperate need to show off, no matter who gets hurt. In order to give his and Betty B.'s love child a few moments of passing pleasure, he subjects the other 198 residents of a five-story apartment house to unannounced nausea-inducing bouts of vertigo by spinning their drastically elevated rental units as if they were his Own Private Potato Hoe. Worse yet, he mangles all of their fire escapes into rollercoaster rails, so that his illicit son "Junior" can play a being a "Peeping Tom" as he zips by dozens of his neighbor's bathroom windows! Seldom has selfish Pachyderm Party Perversity been demonstrated more clearly than in GRAMPY'S INDOOR OUTING!

Every Kid Should Have A 'Grampy' Like Him!
ccthemovieman-118 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The kind-hearted and inventive Grampy always comes to the rescue. Usually he's helping Betty Boop but here he does kind deeds for Little Jimmy.

Looking out their apartment window, Bette and Little Jimmy (called "Junior" in here) see a passing truck advertising a carnival, so they decide to go. While "Junior" gets dressed, Bette sings "We'll Have A Bushel Of Fun," another up-tempo feel-good song. Nobody was better at singing those short, uplifting songs that our girl Betty Boop.

As they leave a big storm comes up and they have to stay inside. Junior throws a temper tantrum, bawling his eyes out. He's so loud he wakes up the snoring "Professor Grampy" upstairs. The amazing old-man inventor is not upset, he's upbeat and puts on his thinking cap to see if he can help with Junior's dilemma.

Well, Grampy comes through again and makes an amusement park out out his room. The ending is really incredible as Grampy produces a roller coaster on the outside of the building! Don't ask....just enjoy.

It's hard not to love Grampy
planktonrules28 September 2013
I have seen a ton of Betty Boop cartoons recently and I must have to say that the best thing about any of them are the times when Grampy appears--which, to me, wasn't often enough. Grampy was not just adorable but his inventions were often hilarious (or sadistic as in the case of "Be Human").

In "Grampy's Indoor Outing", Betty is watching Junior*. She's promised to take him to the carnival--but suddenly it begins raining and Junior is heart-broken. So, it's Grampy to the rescue and he uses his thinking cap to come up with a wonderful time INSIDE. Grampy makes up some makeshift carnival rides and games of skill for Junior to play--all made with various household items. It's all kind of cute and the kid is pretty easy to please--and the final trick is a doozy! Plus, as I watched, I sure wish I'd had a grandfather like this!! While this is not among the best Grampy episodes, it is quite good--cute and original as well as well worth your time.

"Let me put on my thinking cap."
Son_of_Mansfield27 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
When Littly Jimmy's eyes cloud over(literally) at the rain ruining his trip to the carnival, Betty Boop enlists Professor Grampy. Grampy creates all sorts of joys for Little Jimmy including: a spoon shooting gallery, a mop and bucket strength test, and a roller coaster around the entire building with a giant umbrella to protect against the rain. This is a extremely cute short with the supremely likable Grampy. Just like in the classic Christmas Comes But Once A Year, Grampy shows what a little ingenuity can do for you. Betty Boop, sweet as ever, sings another enjoyable song. The pairing of kind Betty and genius Grampy works well. See also Betty Boop and Grampy, Be Human, Candid Candidate, and House Cleaning Blues. A pleasant short to remember in stormy weather.

Absolutely delightful
TheLittleSongbird11 February 2017
A good deal of the pre-Production Code Betty Boop cartoons are daring and creative, with content that makes one amazed at what's gotten away with. While the later Betty Boop cartoons made after the Code was enforced are still watchable and exceptionally well-made, they are so toned down that they feel bland.

Fleischer were responsible for some brilliant cartoons, some of them still among my favourites. Their visual style was often stunning and some of the most imaginative and ahead of its time in animation. The character of Betty Boop, one of their most famous and prolific characters, may not be for all tastes and sadly not as popular now, but her sex appeal was quite daring for the time and to me there is an adorable sensual charm about her. She has not lost her charm and is fun to watch.

Like what was said with the every bit as delightful 'Betty Boop and Grampy', also one of the best post-Production Code Betty Boop cartoons, hile it was said in the first paragraph that the later Betty Boop cartoons were bland in comparison to the pre-Code ones there were exceptions.

'Grampy's Indoor Outing' is one of those exceptions, and even though not as risqué, daring or surreal as the pre-Code cartoons it does fondly remind one of back when the Betty Boop cartoons had more oomph than after the Code was enforced. Little Jimmy, or shall we say Junior, is annoying and hardly cute but not enough to ruin the cartoon.

The animation is beautifully drawn and detailed and the music infectious, toe-tapping and dynamic. Adorable and hilarious Grampy once again steals the show, a riot of a character with imaginative and enormously fun inventions and easily one of the best Betty Boop supporting characters. The voice acting is well done.

All in all, absolutely delightful and proof that post-Production Code Betty Boop can still be good with the right execution. 9/10 Bethany Cox
