The Treasure Map
boblipton19 June 2021
Hans, Fritz, Der Kaptain, and Long John Silver discover a treasure map and pursue the loot in this episode of MGM's cartoon series.

Of course, the Kids are soon onto the competition and decide the greater glory lies in tormenting Der Kaptain. Although the modern audience, long grow used to cartoons being in color (at least), will find that the technical aspects of this black-and-white cartoon are well handled, and the gags are moderately amusing.

The ending of this brief cartoon is the dream of every . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . Home Economics Major: self-sufficient pants! How good would it be if any time they got dirty, your guy or your sons' trousers would just trot over to the tub and WASH THEMSELVES?! The dungarees featured at the end of BURIED TREASURE seem to be endowed with this capability. (Would it be too much to ask for them to repair themselves, too? That way, if a belt loop started to detach due to the downing of a six pack--or a case--every evening, the jeans would sew it up overnight, as well as ironing on any needed patches. Just hoping.)

Katzenjammers in fine form

The old MGM "Captain and the Kids" cartoons are hard to come by today but they do pop up from time to time on Cartoon Network's "Late Night Black and White". "Buried Treasure" has a likable, bouncy silliness as Hans and Fritz lead Der Captain on a wild goose chase filled with fun gags and a few head-scratchers. Although this series was not successful in it's day, some individual episodes are a hoot. And for the record - Mel Blanc supplied the voice of Long John Silver.
