Hans And Fritz Are Hoping For Coal
boblipton17 December 2022
Mama, Hans, and Fritz are decorating the hearth with stockings, and the Captain is heading in on a sleigh, dressed as Santa Claus. But John Silver sees no reason why he shouldn't get all the goodies, at least until he falls down the chimney, bumps his head, and thinks he is Santa Claus.

Fred Quimby had a good thing going in this series, with Joe Barbera writing, and Friz Freleng directing. Unfortunately, this was not the sort of cartoon Freleng wanted to make, especially when the contract with Rudolph Dirks meant he got all the credit, and Quimby was not interested in cartoons, and allowed Dirks to interfere. So Freleng would soon head back to Leon Schlesinger, who also wasn't interested in cartoons, but had no problem with giving credit to his artists rather than paying them more money.

Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum

Long John Silver and his henchmen, the Herring Boys, dress up as St. Nick and ruin Christmas Eve for the Captain and the Kids. John feels an unusual sting of remorse and is briefly haunted by a vision of himself as a child. (He looks a lot like Buster Brown!!) Lively and amusing, even though the kids aren't allowed to be their traditionally diabolical selves. Silver's unorthodox method of fund-raising is a highlight. I'm not sure who to credit for this since Graham Webb's "Animated Film Encyclopedia" lists Milt Gross as the director, while other sources give the honors to Friz Freleng.

Not Really a Fan
utgard1426 December 2013
I'm admittedly not overly familiar with "The Captain and the Kids" series. So perhaps this cartoon is a poor place to jump on. Apparently The Captain is dressed up as Santa to deliver presents to the kids. Some British thief (he says blimey and bloomin' a lot) with three weird little guys who hang around him jumps the Captain and puts on his Santa suit. Then he goes into the house and proceeds to terrorize the children destroying everything and ruining their Christmas. So basically what we have here is a Christmas cartoon about a home invasion. Creepy.

The animation is OK but the guy's peg leg switches legs constantly. The humor that I see such praise for here was missing for me. Judging by other reviews this is I guess one of the better "Captain & the Kids" shorts. That doesn't make me want to seek out the others. Undoubtedly fans of the series will enjoy it much more.

While chaotic, The Captain's Christmas was a pretty enjoyable holiday cartoon starring The Captain and the Kids
tavm13 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Having just discovered this Christmas cartoon starring The Captain and the Kids on YouTube, I have to say-the plotting is all over the place what with peg-leg John stealing The Captain's disguise as Santa Claus, breaking into Mama and her boys'-Hans and Franz-house not to mention their toys and then vowing to make amends because of a crisis of conscience and not getting arrested for his previous doings? Well, it is Christmas and forgiveness is ample here. Having said all that, there are some pretty funny gags here and I loved seeing John and his co-horts sing with their tongues moving up and down in rhythm and with Friz Freleng as director-having temporarily left Leon Schlesinger for M-G-M-you know you're getting some good musical animation. So with all that, I'll just be generous and recommend The Captain's Christmas.

The Captain's entertaining Christmas
TheLittleSongbird30 May 2018
Love animation, it was a big part of my life as a child, particularly Disney, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, and still love it whether it's film, television or cartoons. Actually appreciate it even more through young adults eyes, due to having more knowledge of it, various animation styles, studios, directors and how it all works.

'The Captain's Christmas' is not one of Friz Freleng's best cartoons by any stretch, in an uneven "still evolving" period of his long career, and he was yet to be in his full prime and not yet found his style properly. For a relatively early effort, 'The Captain's Christmas', one of a short-lived series of cartoons and easily the best of them, is well above average but not great or a Freleng classic. He would do much better later when there would be more freshness and wit, more laugh a minute material, an even livelier pace and more confidence.

It is fairly predictable story-wise and the Captain could have had more to. do

However, the titular character and especially John are fun characters and the chemistry between the characters elevates 'The Captain's Christmas'. John is in it more and he is more interesting and funnier.

The cartoon is very amusing, actually hilarious in particularly the final carolling scene, and it goes at a lively and energetic pace. It is a Christmas cartoon but it never gets too sappy.. The dialogue is witty and clever.

Animation is excellent, it's fluid in movement, crisp in shading and very meticulous in detail. It's also pretty witty. The music is lovely on the ears, lushly orchestrated, full of lively energy and characterful in rhythm, adding to the action and even enhancing.

Voice acting from Mel Blanc and Billy Bletcher, Blanc especially with more to do, is terrific and full of character.

Although, above average and hugely entertaining but nothing mind-blowing. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Goes for comedy over spirit, but comes pretty short in both
Horst_In_Translation18 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"The Captain's Christmas" or "The Short Cut" is an American 8-minute cartoon from 1938, so this one has its 80th birthday this year and as we are approaching the holiday season already, this one gets a bit more attention than it usually does during the rest of the year. It is an MGM movie that features several familiar names like director Freleng or of course voice actors Blanc and Bletcher. I think the voice actors did an okay job and the fact that this is in color is helping too. But the story and comedy overall just isn't good enough. We have a captain who dresses up as Santa and his several sailors that add nothing basically except they look like a color version of Popeye when he was young. So yeah, the film is fast and loud, almost obnoxious, but at its essence it comes pretty short sadly. I know it is not trying to make an impact with the music for example and that is even part of the story, but I still expected more than that, especially as sometimes the film really feels as if it wants to get the Christmas spirit into houses and families, where it was badly needed in these tumultous times so shortly before World War II. I am for example talking about these voice of reason moments featuring Sandy Claus. So yeah all in all, I don't think i really laughed once, even if the singing sequence with these tongues moving up and down had me close to. This short is a tolerable, but not necessary watch in December, but for the rest of the year it is a must-skip that proves that not even the most gifted voice actors can make a mediocre script work. Watch something else instead.

I liked this better than The Corporal's Yule . . .
pixrox129 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
. . . The Sergeant's Santa Soiree and The Lieutenant's Legion of Luminous Lights. However, I think that The Major's Merry Mass, The Colonel's Sacred Child Christening, Anchors Weigh for the Admiral's Advent and The Field Marshal's Festive Noel all were more full of holiday spirits than THE CAPTAIN'S CHRISTMAS. Which begs the question of "Which entry in this martial elves series best reflects the Yule log's glow? Personally, I think it's a toss up between The Private's Silent Night and Away in the General's Gun Ranger.

This demented trash surely emboldened . . .
oscaralbert6 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
. . . the Axis Powers of World War Two as they misjudged America as nearly-rotten fruit ripe for the plucking. THE CAPTAIN'S CHR!STMAS uses the hackneyed MGM cartoon device of the main character ("Pegleg John Silver" here, NOT "The Captain," as the title would lead you to suspect!) falling asleep to have a wild dream mid-cartoon. (If these animated folks had had any brains, they'd dream about being employed at ANOTHER movie studio besides MGM!) Problem is, Pegleg John NEVER wakes from his nightmare about shooting up the kids' Christmas while dressed in a Santa Suit. (Yes, there WAS a live-action feature remake of this animated short last holiday season titled KRAMPUS.) More perversely, Pegleg John rides over all the Captain's kids' new toys on their newly assembled tricycle, breaking the whole lot of them--trike and all! Most disturbingly, John-as-a-Kid (with a miniature Pegleg and all!) shows up to persuade John to go to a nearby village totally populated by Santas to beg for replacement toys! John's pirate crew may or may not crash the Pearly Gates during this foray, but who really cares?

The best of the whole series, with a hilarious ending!
llltdesq25 December 2002
This is just about the only genuinely funny Captain and the Kids cartoon they made. A few were reasonably good, if not terribly memorable. But this one deserves to be seen and remembered. I suspect that the fact that, despite the title, The Captain makes but a cameo appearance has something to do with its success. The focus here is on the pirate John, a much more interesting character. John's attempts to make amends for his thoughtless actions are the bulk of the cartoon. The caroling scene is beautiful!!! Suffice it to say that I've never quite heard "Hang Up the Holly in the Window" in the same way before and it will always remind me of this cartoon whenever I hear it in the future! Painful, but effective! Well worth tracking down. Most recommended.

One of the funnier Christmas shorts
Squonk31 March 1999
I have to admit, this is the first, and so far the only, short I've seen featuring the Katzenjammer Kids (or "The Captain and the Kids" as they're called here). I really enjoyed it. The story is simple, the Captain is going to surprise the kids by dressing as Santa Claus, however, the peg-legged villain called John takes his place. There are some very funny visuals. I especially enjoyed the peg-legged foot prints left by John on the snow covered roof. The final Christmas carolling scene is also a riot. Unlike many Christmas cartoons, this one doesn't get too sappy. It keeps a high level of craziness while remaining in the Christmas spirit.

good Christmas and great for a Captain cartoon
SnoopyStyle17 December 2022
The family is celebrating Christmas in their cozy home. The Captain is playing Santa. While he's trying to pull the cow and sleigh up the roof to play the part, John Silver and his gang stick him up. John Silver ends up on the roof dressed as Santa Claus. He falls down the chimney and loses his memory. He thinks that he is the real Santa Claus.

Bah humbug. I don't know why the Rate is so low for this "The Captain and the Kids" cartoon. This is the 12th of 15 cartoons before the series was canceled. It's never been my favorite franchise. I don't really like the Captain or his family. This one has to be one of the best of the series. It's chaotic. It's fun. It's mostly John Silver going out of his mind. The Christmas spirit turns him to the good side. It doesn't get more Christmas. On the technical side, the colors look bright. The motions are smooth. There is a lot going on and it all looks good. People need more of the Christmas spirit.
