This is a tricky Looney Tune to review, because it offers so much food for thought . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . that it would probably take at least a monograph, doctoral thesis, or Magnum Opus book to fully explore. However, speaking of food, let's examine "Herbert Strongfort's" carrot sequence during HOBBY-HORSE LAFFS. The narrator intones that Herb's been eating nothing but carrots, at which point Herbie doffs his cap to reveal large rabbit ears. This bit clearly is based upon WOYZECK, Georg Buchner's virtually illegible dramatic fragment penned in 1836, a year before the playwright's demise. It's clearly set during the period BEFORE Woyzeck has killed his lover Marie for sleeping with the Drum Major. Furthermore, it's obvious that Warner Bros.' Looney Tuners were NOT relying on the inaccurate 1879 translation by Karl Emil Franzos of Buchner's microscopic original draft, but rather the new and improved 1921 Georg Witkowski interpretation. Like Herbie Strongfort, Germany's Fascist Military Quacks had capriciously condemned Woyzeck to eating a single food: the nothing-but-peas diet. Warner warns Americans Then and Now to eat moderately from the Four Food Groups; never eat just peas like Woyzeck, carrots like Strongfort, peanuts like Jimmy Carter, or nuts like Don Juan Rump!

The gags are flat

This short is a spoof on hobbyists of the day. The gags are the usual cartoon exaggerations of real life, but there's the problem. The hobbies and inventions being spoofed don't relate to any reality either then or now. So there's no irony to laugh at. They're actually spoofing a fantasy rather than reality and it just doesn't work for me. This short is not awful, but the execution is weak. I just expect more "edge" from a Looney Tunes cartoon.

But I'm not trashing this B&W short. The artistry is good. The music is standard. The sound effects are great. It just needed much more story development and real premises.
