Exclusive: Mandy Gonzalez, star of In The Heights, Hamilton and Aida, will play the role of Norma Desmond at select performances of Broadway’s upcoming Sunset Blvd., taking one performance a week with star Nicole Scherzinger taking all others.
Gonzalez will play her first performance on Tuesday, October 22. The casting was announced today by producers of the Jamie Lloyd-directed revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which begins previews at the St. James Theatre on Saturday, September 28 ahead of a Sunday, October 20 opening night.
Gonzalez said in a statement, “In my 25 years playing leading ladies on Broadway, I’ve never been more excited for a show. The role of Norma Desmond is iconic, Jamie Lloyd’s direction is masterful, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score is sumptuous. This year’s Tonys will be held on June 16, so the American Theatre Wing will likely be announcing its Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in the near future. It has gone to veteran stage performers, directors, choreographers, playwrights, songwriters, producers and designers. In some years we get multiple recipients.
Last year these honors went to actor Joel Grey and composer John Kander. The following living male Broadway vets have also received this award in the past and thus won’t be chosen again: Paul Gemignani, Alan Ayckbourn, Athol Fugard, Marshall W. Mason, Tommy Tune, James Earl Jones, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Harold Wheeler.

The 2023 Oscar ceremony was a triumph for international film. Going into the ceremony, Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front was a winner already, having earned a spectacular seven nominations. If that wasn’t enough, it came away with four statuettes: one for International Feature, and three for Cinematography, Music and Production Design. Clearly this can’t happen every year, but, like Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite before it, Berger’s World War I epic proved that boundaries are being broken down, and international film, once synonymous with arthouse,...

Destiny’s Child is one of the biggest, most influential R&b-pop girl groups of all time.
The legendary troupe first debuted in the late ‘90s, delivering hits like “No, No, No,” “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name” that sent them skyrocketing to superstardom in the music industry.
Throughout the years, the group experienced several member lineup shake-ups, before ultimately landing on their most well-known iteration, dubbed “DC3.” Together, the trio would release fun, empowering smashes like “Survivor,” “Bootylicious” and “Independent Woman Pt. 1.”
Since their last studio album in the mid ‘00s, Destiny Fulfilled, all of the members have gone on to embark on solo ventures expanding beyond music into acting, writing, presenting, and appearing as judges on popular reality TV shows.

Poland’s Oscar committee has selected The Peasants, a sumptuous animated literary adaptation from Loving Vincent directors Dk and Hugh Welchman, as the country’s submission for the best international feature category at the 2024 Oscars, over The Green Border, a critically-acclaimed film from two-time Oscar nominee Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, In Darkness).
The decision, announced by the committee in Warsaw Monday afternoon, comes after a concerted attack on The Green Border by Poland’s far-right government, with the justice minister and the country’s president condemning the film and comparing it to “Nazi propaganda” for its depiction of the refugee crisis on Poland’s border with Belarus.
The head of Poland’s Oscar committee, producer Ewa Puszczyńska, whose credits include the Oscar-winner Ida, the Oscar-nominated Quo vadis, Aida? and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, the U.K. entry for the 2024 best international feature race, said deliberations were “tough...

Rome-based sales agency True Colours has added Edoardo de Angelis’ “Comandante,” which opens the Venice Film Festival, to its slate. The film, which plays in the main competition section, stars Pierfrancesco Favino.
“Comandante” is based on the true story of Italian submarine commander Salvatore Todaro and the events that occurred in October 1940, when Todaro was in command of the Italian Royal Navy submarine Cappellini.
One night, while navigating in the Atlantic, the Italian vessel sinks an armed Belgian merchant ship, and Todaro decides to take the 26 shipwrecked crew members on board his already crowded submarine, aiming for the nearest safe harbor to release them. It is an unexpected action in the context of war, but follows the law of the sea, and endangers his life as well as that of his men, since the submarine has to navigate on the surface of the water for three days, visible to the enemy forces.

“The Masked Singer” now has just seven celebrities still in the hunt to win season 2. Four of these — disguised as the Butterfly, Flamingo, Thingamajig and Tree — took to the stage on December 4. They sang for the audience votes and hoped to avoid being the one contestant sent home by the four judges.
Of this quartet, the strongest singer is the Butterfly. She first wowed us with her talent back in week 1 when she covered “Bang Bang,” the hit dance tune by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. She returned in week 4 with a toe-tapping version of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. She was back the following week and floored us with her cover of “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones.
We’ve watched these three performances over and over again. And we’ve scoured her clues video to try and figure out just who is hiding inside the Butterfly costume.

“The Masked Singer” was a huge hit for Fox last winter because of its intriguing concept: celebrities clad in elaborate costumes perform songs and hope to win over the judging panel and studio audience so that they can move on in the competition. On Wednesday’s season 2 premiere, eight stars sang. The Butterfly opened the show with a high-energy performance of “Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.
Before taking to the stage, the Butterfly offered up several clues as to her identity. She revealed that she had decided to dress as a butterfly because she loved “flying high.” She said she was “ready to shake up the competition” and echoed Muhammad Ali when she declared she’d “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” However, the Butterfly cautioned that the cumbersome costume could be her downfall, literally. Indeed, she readily admitted, “I just pray that I don’t fall over.

As of this writing Stephanie J. Block (“The Cher Show”) is the front-runner to win this year’s Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical with 16/5 odds after prevailing at the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. But the last time this Tony category went to a performance in a show that wasn’t nominated for Best Musical or Best Musical Revival was 2000 when Heather Headley won for “Aida.” “The Cher Show” received three nominations overall, but the other two were for costumes and lighting design, not in the top category. So is Stephanie as far out front as the Experts think she is?
In the biographical musical about the life of Cher, we see the legendary recording artist at three stages of her life, with three actresses portraying her as “Babe,” “Lady,” and “Star.” While the show overall received a mixed critical reception when it opened on Broadway back in December,...

Stephanie J. Block is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Musical at this Sunday’s Tonys for her dynamic embodiment of Cher in “The Cher Show.” However, Tony history is not on her side. You have to go back to 2000 to find a leading lady who won without her show at least being in contention for Best Musical or Best Musical Revival.
Heather Headley won for “Aida,” edging out Toni Collette (“The Wild Party”), Rebecca Luker (“The Music Man”), the late Marin Mazzie and future Tony record-setter Audra McDonald (“Marie Christine”). Collette, Luker, and Mazzie all headlined productions that competed for one of the top categories.
It was something of a shock when “Aida” was left out of the Best Musical category. Perhaps that snub built sentiment for “Aida” and its powerhouse star. Voters certainly disagreed with the nominating committee as the tuner took home an additional three Tony Awards.

Unlike recent Broadway seasons, this year’s Tony Award race for Best Musical is wide open. This is one of the few points on which David Buchanan and myself agree. As Tony season begins to heat up, David and I sat down to discuss potential nominations in the musical categories. Watch the full video above.
We think that there are currently three musicals with the potential to win the top award: “Be More Chill,” “Hadestown,” and “Tootsie.” We both list “Hadestown” as the current frontrunner due to its original score, fresh concept, and respected creative team. If these three shows are locked for a nomination, that will leave one open slot up for grabs in the Best Musical category.
David is backing “Ain’t Too Proud” with his fourth slot, the crowd pleasing story of The Temptations. But as Tony voters have strayed from jukebox musicals in favor of original score,...

This week in cinema history, 59 years ago, Italian screen legend Sophia Loren got her first big acting break as an Ethiopian slave in the titular role of director Clemente Fracassi's film adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, Aida. The film tells the story of Ethiopian princess Aida, who is kidnapped into slavery in Egypt. Aida becomes romantically involved with Egyptian army officer Radames (Luciano della Marra), further complicating her plight, as she is enslaved to the Pharaoh's daughter Amneris (Lois Maxwell), who also loves Radames.
