Or at least this is the way that Van Dyke remembers it, in interviews on CBS Sunday MORNING (where they presumably would've corrected him if he was wrong) and his recent interview on Mark Maron's pod-cast WTF. Van Dyke describes being hired by CBS, without the network having much of a good idea what to do with him, sticking him into short-lived cartoon/kid shows, game shows, and in this early attempt to challenge TODAY. Unsuccessfully, though perhaps the team of Van Dyke and Cronkite was as likely to do the trick as anyone that CBS could come up with in those days...no evidence of a chimp in the accounts from Van Dyke (as the TODAY show had). So, no cast member who might've bitten anyone's face...we can hope...
