Hal Towne is a Los Angeles widower with a bright ten-year-old son to raise (aided by a stern housekeeper). He writes a syndicated column, "All Around Towne," which brings him into contact with numerous competitors for the favors of his publicity-agent girlfriend.
Hal hosts old friend Major Brick Lafferty before he reports for duty. But the army man parties too hard so Hal goes to base to cover for his pal. But do to a snafu Hal finds himself getting a physical then readied for a mission.
A show biz friend of Hal's drops by and thinks Sarge would be perfect for the stage. Hal, not wanting to lose his housekeeper, has his doubts. He hires an acting coach hoping that will end Sarge's acting ambitions
Sarge encounters a former matinee idol, down on his luck, in the park. The housekeeper brings the older man home to clothe and feed him, then return him to his previous glory. Hal has his doubts that it will work.
Hal's publisher friend asks for help as his 21 year old son has become entangled with a flashy showgirl. Hal is successful is liberating the young man then finds himself the object of the woman's attentions.
When Sarge is questioned for passing a counterfeit note, Hal turns amateur criminologist and investigates his new neighbors, convinced that they must be printing fake money.
Hal decides Sarge needs a hand so he hires Annabella, a young maid. No one seems to figure out she is a missing princess but when it's discovered a diplomatic crisis occurs.
