Slave raiders in the night
unbrokenmetal17 July 2015
In the opening scene, Maciste captures a giant whale and pulls it ashore. Normal people would settle for a trout, but that's superheroes for you! Before he can have his modest breakfast, he watches some people hunted and killed by riders with white capes. These mysterious strangers are the Mole Men who disappear at the beginning of daytime, only to return at night for slave raids. They cannot stand the light, it is even a method of execution for them to expose the condemned to sunshine. Maciste lets them capture him on purpose, so he can find out where their hiding-spot is. The Mole Men have a mine underground, where slaves have to work on a mill. Maciste intends to free the slaves and put an end to the terror of the Mole Men. But they are prepared and make plans to kill Maciste in many interesting, but complicated ways...

Funny little flick with a truly bizarre story. John Garko, later a successful western movie star, appears as an ambitious young Mole Man who wants to marry the queen (Moira Orfei), while Mark Forest stars as Maciste, Son of Hercules.

Cindy Crawford as the evil Queen?
dbborroughs12 February 2004
No of course not but they could be related. This is as bad as the people who make fun of the Sword and Sandal films think they are, but its also a hell of a lot more interesting than many better films. This film is very silly, we have white mole men with afros, a black actor who acts like he's a character out of a racist 1930's film, people falling off horses when Maciste just runs towards them...This film has a jaw dropping quality to make one wonder if the film makers knew what a turkey they were producing when they made it. Even if they didn't I'm kinda glad I did since it a laugh out loud gem.

Average but passable Peplum with the muscle-man Mark Forest taking on the underground Mole Men
ma-cortes10 July 2021
Italian production typical of the genre with haunting scenarios , wonderful indoors and functional production design. Here Maciste (Mark Forest) arranges enemies for himself and he befriends a new pal called Bangor (Paul Wynter) to be captured by a strange band of white-clad marauders and taken to an underground city . There the two are forced to turn a huge wheel along with other captives as part of a gold-and-diamonds mining operation . The underground city's queen, Halis Mosab (Moira Orfei) , takes note of the bouncing Maciste and chooses him to be her consort if he can meet such challenges as saving the abducted Princess Saliura (Rafaella Carra) from a gigantic ape . Maciste faces off the ape and fights a deadly struggle with the giant gorilla . As Maciste is up to his pecs in trouble as he fights nasty Mole Men in order to save the abducted lady , carrying Saliura back to the aboveground world . As the bare-chested warrior goes on an all-out rampage to save her , being mercilessly chased by the mysterious masked warriors . Meanwhile, high priest Kahab informs his son, Katar (Gianni Garco) , that he has to marry the powerful queen to inherite the underground empire . Later on, Maciste must use his strength to rescue his friends and attack the hidden city . As he battles the evil queen and attempting to destroy the unstoppable wheeling machine .

This is a so-so spaghetti , myth-opera with action , love , battles and interior scenarios . The movie has not mythological accuracy neither expecting historical , but it results to be a simple and plain fantasy . Breathtaking scenes when take place at the underworld with the enormous wheel and overwhelming final battle . It stars handsome, muscular Mark Forest , he is perfect as the mythical hero who encounters many dangerous situations while trying to save a princess of numerous odds . Forest who played the mythic Maciste in great number of movies was randomly assigned the identity of Hercules , Goliath , Samson or Aron for U. S. viewing . Bouncing and strong Forest was the second American actor bodybuilder , after Steve Reeves , to be recruited by Italian producers to star in Peplum films . The muscle-man Forest left allegedly the sword and sandals genre for the Opera . He used the amount of money he made acting as hero and gladiator films in Italy to study Opera , he currently teaches in the Los Angeles zone . He was one along with Ed Fury , Dan Vadis,Brad Harris , Alan Steel , Reg Park , Gordon Scott whom to seek fortune acting absurdly as muscle mythological figures but nobody topped Steve Reeves in popularity . Forest only starred Peplum , such as : 1964 Hércules against sons of sun , 1964 Lion of Tebas , 1964 Maciste Nell'inferno Gengis Khan , 1964 Maciste, Gladiatore Sparta , 1963 Maciste Contro i Mongoli ,1963 Maciste, l'Eroe più Grande del Mondo ,1962 Maciste, Gladiatore più forte Mondo , 1961 Maciste, the Son of Hercules , 1960 La Venganza De Ercole . In the picture turns up Peplum and Spaghetti ordinaries such as : the recently deacased Raffaella Carrà (at 78), Roberto Miali , Nando Tamberlani , Graziella Granata and spaghetti star Gianni Garco , the popular actor of Sartana and other Western antiheroes .

It contains a moving and thrilling musical score by Armando Trovajoli. As well as colorful cinematography by Alvaro Mancori , including spectacular vistas of falls , shot in Lacio, mount Gelato and and Cinecittà Studios, Cinecittà, Rome . The motion picture was middlingly directed Antonio Leonviola (1913-1995) who often used pseudonym Leon Viola or as Leonviola. He was a craftsman , a writer and filmmaker who directed all kinds of genres as dramas , wartime , comedy , such as : Le due verità , Sul ponte dei sospir , Al suo più grande amore,Noi cannibali , Human Torpedoes , Rita da Cascia, Fiera di tipi and outstanding in Peplum , Sword and sandal and adventures such as : The Women gladiators , Taur the Mighty , Maciste, the Colossus and this Maciste el invencible. Rating : 5/10 .

Mark Forest Muscles Up a Racial Subtext
wes-connors21 February 2010
"While traveling across the land, our hero Maciste finds the survivors of an attack by some strange warriors. The murderous attackers were all albinos that Maciste tracks to a hidden underground city. Looking to avenge the victims of the attacks, Maciste heads into the city under the surface to battle these strange underground dwellers," according to the DVD sleeve's synopsis.

Dubbed "Mole Men against the Son of Hercules" for American consumption. Relatively speaking, this isn't too bad for a lower budgeted Italian "sword and sandal" epic. Bulging, muscular Mark Forest struts his Herculean form well. Queenly, voluptuous Moira Orfei will raise an eyebrow. Paul Wynter heralds some darker-skinned supporting players. And, Gianni Garko heads the clannish, white-cloaked "Mole Men", a vampire-like master race.

Maciste Is At It Again - With Lame Foes
Rainey-Dawn21 January 2017
Maciste, Son of Hercules is at it again. This time he is fighting his lamest foes yet - The Mole Men. The Mole Men must live underground and not to be caught above ground because if they go out the sunlight will kill them. They are pale with white long (wigs) hair, look like humans.

Someone somewhere must have been making a killing off these films... money that is. Italy pumped out several of these in just a few years time, 7 years (1958 to 1965) before the spaghetti westerns took over. Apparently the it didn't matter the story or foes or how well it was filmed, the audiences must have just wanted to look at muscle men on screen doing whatever at that time.

Awful movie, one of the worst peplum of the time era.

"Here comes the sun..." Run!!!!
dvox31 May 1999
Son of Hercules vs. sun-sensitive subterranean Sicilians in this anti-"Beach Blanket Bingo" bunko beneath the bowels of Italy! The most "dramatic" scene depicts a guard (punished for allowing the hero to escape) stripped, strapped to a slab, and subjected to sunlight (which causes him to disintegrate). The viewer realizes that it is NOT the words to the 1966 hit "Sunny" ("Sunny, thank you for the sunshine you gave...") the tortured titan is singing as he screams "No! No! Not the sun! Aieee!!" This flick never should have seen the light of day. I say "No! No! Not "Mole Men Vs. The Son of Hercules"! Aieee!!"

One of the worst!
b_moviebuff16 October 2005
Once again our Italian friends come up with sheer nonsense!,people from underground who are obviously painted white with wigs that seem to have been rescued from a blaxploitation film, the usual bad photography is evident as in most sword and sandal epics, our hero the very handsome and athletic Mark Forest battles gamely against all the odds while no doubt having one eye on his bank account to provide him with an opera singing school, something he still does to this day,if anything he was one of the best muscle men but never really got any decent films to work on in the genre although most were made almost back to back in a production line way you would think at least one or two might have had attention holding qualities.

The Total Package
bkoganbing13 December 2010
One of my favorite low budget science fiction films is The Mole People with John Agar and Hugh Beaumont. This team of modern scientists discover an underground albino like people. That film must have inspired this uninspiring peplum epic, Mole Men Against The Son Of Hercules who in some countries is Maciste. Personally I think Hercules should have objected to the billing.

One thing Mark Forest might have objected to, Hercules has a friend in Paul Wynter who's actually better built than him. I can't believe the producers let that one go.

On his journeys Hercules comes upon a pretty barren countryside where a group of mysterious people make night raids, though mostly in the twilight of dawn, the better for cameras of surrounding villages, killing a few, but dragging the rest off as slaves. They can only operate above ground at night because they dry up and blow away just like The Mole People in the fire of Ishtar in that film.

The albinos doing this are ruled by a Queen who doesn't quite have the pasty complexion they do. Of course there's an obvious reason for it, but no one in this film figures out until the very end.

I will say this Paul Wynter is quite the total package, he's the best reason for watching Mole Men Against The Son Of Hercules.

Boosom Buddies underground.

Warning: Spoilers
The friendship between the large muscled Mark Forest and Paul Wynter is one of the more interesting elements in the "Sons of Hercules" series as these Machiste peplum films for TV syndication were billed under. I doubt theatrical prints of these films exist anywhere, and it doesn't really matter it does only the credits appear to be different. With the snappy theme song, it's always a pleasure to find these oh, and some of them are actually pretty good. This one probably ranks as one of the best that I've seen because of its amazing story concerning a group of mole people (which includes an evil queen jealous of anybody who can stare into the sun) who kidnapped earthlings for slavery, and that includes Forest and Wynter, recent acquaintances who have become Inseparable after Forest saved Wynter's life after an attempted kidnapping.

While the queen is definitely less than noble, she is very layered in her characterization so you get to see varying sides of her. The mole army, cotton wig-wearing men, plot to murder the queen who is showing signs of wanting to end her life underground, wanting to marry Machiste who has proven his strength by defeating a hideously ugly giant ape-like creature and preventing a knife filled boulder from crashing down on Wynter and another big hunk of muscle.

I love the setting of the queen's abode, a giant peacock feather like backdrop, and all sorts of nooks and crannies that open and close to reveal various Horrors. There is a shot of forest and Wynter handling an actual mole who when let go promptly borrows into the ground. The most hideous scene of torture involves a mole man who has betrayed his people come up put in a device that opens the enclosed tomb and burns him up, clothes and all, while leaving his shoes behind. A fabulous conveyer belt like contraption is anotger treat. Silly fun that is entertaining throughout and gives a glimpse into the career of long time body building champion Wynter whose personal story would make a great film itself.

Machiste against the mole men
coltras351 February 2024
The ancient days of Greece, countless villages have fallen victim to the evil mole people, who kidnap the survivors of their conquests to be slaves in their diamond mine. The famous hero Maciste hears of this crime and swears to seek justice and take the mole people down. Aided by a fellow strongman named Bangor, Maciste infiltrates the caverns of the mole men as a prisoner, intent on freeing the prisoners and ending the reign of their sadistic queen Halis Moyaab. She has other plans though, and wishes to either see Maciste dead, or reigning by her side...

Italian peplums are like Marmite, you either loathe them, finding them cheesy and kitschy, or love them, finding them well-made actioners with a strong imagination. I'm in the latter category - yes, Hercules meets the mole men is cheesy and even silly with creatures with white hair and living underground, but it's quite imaginative and intriguing to a point. Yes, mole men idea seems bizarre, but then this is a fantasy film. The Ewoks and the oompah loompahs aren't any less silly! The major problem of this film is the pace. It's slow, but there's a few action scenes to overcome this. The best character is the Queen, played by Moira Orefai, who is a bad girl, sending people to the death, but she seems to love Maciste. The most interesting aspect is the secret behind her birthright. Not a great film but it has its moments, good action and some atmosphere.

Absolutely silly movie but so entertaining. I love it, especially Maciste and Bangor's mole lesson and the rock/diamond/conveyor belt operation.

Sorry to read Mark Forest died Jan. 7 at 89. Thanks for everything Maciste.

Italian Peplum Movie with Mark FOREST
ZeddaZogenau24 February 2024
Sword and sandal film with Mark Forest and Moira Orfei

The recently deceased Mark Forest (1933-2022) was a sought-after actor in the peplum films of the Roman Cinecitta in the early 1960s. As in this film, he often played the mythological role of Maciste, who had become a kind of superman in Italian film history since the silent film "Cabiria" (1914).

Here he fights with his ally Bango (Paul Wynter, 1935-2019, the Mr. Universe of 1960) against strange mole people and their queen Halis Mojab (Moira Orfei, 1931-2015, the actress was with her own circus until old age and as an elephant tamer). They want to free the kidnapped king's daughter Saliurna (Raffaella Carra, 1943-2021) and bring her back together with her lover Loth (Roberto Mioli). Gianni Garko, born in 1935, plays another role.

The highlight of the rather weaker sword and sandal film is certainly the moment when Maciste is forced into a fight with Bango. In this situation, Maciste at least has a worthy and equal opponent.

The film was produced by Elio Scardamaglia (1920-2001), who was successful with his Leone Films for decades with films and television series.

Mark Forest, who died on January 7, 2022, one day after his 89th birthday, was still successful as an opera singer in the USA after his career as a muscle man in Italian cinema.

An amusingly schlocky hoot
Woodyanders20 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The brave and mighty Maciste (brawny hunk Mark Forest) ventures underground into the kingdom of the Mole Men who capture humans and use them as slaves. The evil, yet beautiful Queen Alismoyab (gorgeously voluptuous brunette Moira Orfei) falls hard for Maciste. Naturally, Maciste rebuffs the Queen's advances and instead tries to free the slaves with the help of loyal companion Bangor (the equally muscular Paul Wynter). Boy, does this often uproariously terrible clunker possess all the right wrong stuff to rate highly as a real four-star stinkeroonie: we've got ham-fisted (mis)direction by Antonio Leonviola, erratic stop'n'go pacing, the mole men are played by a bunch of guys sporting pasty make-up and tacky white wigs, an utterly ridiculous Western-style theme song ballad, laughably cruddy dubbing, hopelessly stiff acting (special kudos here to Raffaella Carra as fair maiden Princess Saliura and Enrico Glori as wicked henchman Kahab), a bombastic score by Armando Trovajoli, clumsily staged action scenes, a cornball stentorian narrator, murky cinematography by Alvaro Mancori, and, of course, the inevitable last reel slave revolt. The picture earns bonus points for its inspired oddball touches: Maciste mixes it up with both a savage gorilla (some dude in an obvious ratty ape suit) and a bunch of ferocious lions, one unfortunate mole fellow disintegrates after being exposed to the sun's lethal rays, a godawful huge and deadly wheel contraption that the slaves are forced to push under threat of death, and Maciste being forced to hold up enormous slabs of stone that could crush his friends if he drops them. Moreover, Forest and Wynter make for a genuinely engaging beefcake duo. Entertainingly cheesy rubbish.

MACISTE AND THE NIGHT QUEEN with MARK FOREST
larryanderson22 September 2021
In 1963 as part of the SONS OF HERCULES series, it still holds up as a fabulous bit of entertainment. Moira Orfei as the Night Queen rules her underground Kingdom with an iron fist. If the "Night creatures" get caught in the sunshine, they will dissolve to dust. If you can find a good quality copy you will be pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is.

"The Mighty Sons Of Hercules, Once Thundered Through The Years!"...
azathothpwiggins21 June 2021
MOLE MEN AGAINST THE SON OF HERCULES is another Maciste film, repackaged as one of the "Sons of Hercules" series. All for American audiences.

Enjoying a relaxing day of whale beaching, Maciste (Mark Forest), is interrupted by a horde of bleached wig-wearing, pasty-skinned interlopers! Thankfully, Maciste is basically a boulder with eyes, and his glistening body oil repels their weaponry like a shining shield of shimmering sheen! He proceeds to mow them down like crabgrass.

Enlisting the aid of his equally enormous friend, Bango (Paul Wynter), the two chuckling heroes flex their tree-like appendages, while ridding the land of Mole men. That is, until they're captured, taken to the subterranean lair, and introduced to the Mole men's queen.

Of course, there are other enslaved prisoners to be freed, and the queen wants Maciste. Bad! Let the obligatory "test of strength" begin! This time, Maciste must fight a "beast man" (aka: a guy in a go-rilla suit) in a cage match to the death! There's also a torturous, triceps-tearing, testosterone-tapping test of endurance, as a bonus!

This movie is a gift from the muscleman gods! There's even -yet another- princess to be rescued! This could very well be the Mount Olympus of entertainment!

Be sure to watch for the "human shish kabob", and "world's biggest chain" sequences!...
