Under Rated Film
Aubreysilver19 December 2005
I really like this film it isn't as pretty as some Disney films, but it also had a lower budget. The music is terrible, but I love it, even Marina's song where I could never understand what she's saying! This film does have it's issues, the sound cuts out, and the picture is OK at best. It hasn't been treated the best post-production. I really wish there would be a better release with a cleaned up animation, a Japanese tract, a new dub, and the original English dub. And about the dubbing- In America it took a while to really get dubbing decent. It isn't this film exclusively, it's all movies of the period. I recommend this film if you find it anywhere, but don't spend too much the DVD set up is minor at best. Disney didn't perfect the Little Mermaid story they told one version of it. Don't get me wrong, I love Ariel, she just isn't the only fish in the sea.

Still heartbreaking

Loved this movie as a kid and I still love it as an adult. Beautiful music too. Not too many goofy annoying characters. More mature and enjoyable. Looking for more movies similar to this one.

A good adapation based on the novel by Han Christian Anderson
lisafordeay22 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid is a 1975 anime based on the novel of the same name and tells the tale of a young mermaid named Marina who dreams of seeing the surface and finding the prince she rescued on his ship. She decides to see the sea witch who makes her drink a potion that will transform her into a human in exchange for one of her scales. But she can't speak due to becoming human. So she meets the prince and of course they somewhat fall in love. However he is already betrothed to a mysterious woman who spotted him after Marina saved him and assumes that she is the one to rescue him and not Marina. Will tragedy strike?.

I liked the fact that it didn't follow the Disney version as it followed the actual novel written by Han Christian Anderson instead where the mermaid tries to kill the prince and she dies by turning into seafoam.

True self-sacrifice...forget "Titanic"
abstellar31 October 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I've been searching for the original "The Little Mermaid" movie for years. I saw it during my obsession with the Disney version, clueless of the differences between versions. Of course, the Disney version has the happy ending where the heroine is rewarded for rescuing her prince...of course she falls in love and he follows suit quickly after...of course there is no third party, disregarding Ursula's attempt to distract Eric.

In the real "Little Mermaid", we have a mermaid named Marina who has also fallen in love with a human. She has her loyal companion, her large family of sisters, and a beautiful voice. She gives it all up to be with a man she has seen and saved...her life as she knows it, just to find love. She visits the evil sea witch and makes a deal--her voice for her love. In an un-Disney-like motion, her tongue is chopped off and the only way her "beloved" can recognize her is gone. If the prince returns her love she will regain her voice and live on. If he does not, she will die and become part of the ocean.

Throughout the movie, you think that Marina will get her man, but another woman comes into the picture...she has sidetracked Marina's true love and he falls in love with her. They are married and Marina accepts her fate to die. Her best friend intervenes by telling her sisters...they all make a deal with the sea witch. They have chopped off their beautiful hair in exchange for her life. The catch: Marina must stab her love while he is sleeping.

The most poignant part of the movie is watching her hover over the bed... the knife is raised, the two lovers are entwined. Even though the last time I've seen this movie was ten years ago, I still remember the big eyes of a Japanamation character first narrowing, then accepting defeat. She chooses love over life. She dies and melts into the ocean, while her poor friend is jumping out of the water, calling "Marina! Marina!" over and over again. I don't care how old you are, (and ignore how horrible my description of this movie may be) but if you're not at least a little teary at this scene, you've got problems.

Anybody who has seen the Disney "The Little Mermaid" must see this. I still love the other version, but this one stayed with me for much longer. Like to torture yourself with tragic movies? This one should be top of your list.

Kind of your fault there Fritz...
Aaron137515 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Little Mermaid, the one that adheres to the original story and is kind of one big bummer. Then again it is a Japanese anime, they do not coddle their children the way we do, which is a bit harsh, but hey, at least they know not everything turns out okay in the end. The animation is not the best, they were not as proficient back then as they are these days so you will see the same character drawn again and again running in an endless loop as the ship begins to sink. They also do not mind showing boobs like we do here in the prude states of America so no seashell bras here. We also get a cat that is evil and apparently there is no real reasoning behind this...

The story, little Marina lives under the sea and is buddies with a dolphin. She comes across a sunken ship and this sparks her interest in going to the surface world. Fritz helps her by blackmailing a whale to get Marina past security as Marina is too young to go to the surface, unlike her sisters. Fritz's decision will doom Marina! In the sunken ship there is a statue of a prince and when she goes to the surface she witnesses his ship going down. She saves him and before he awakens on the beach, she leaves and another girl watches over him. Marina wishes to have legs and go to the prince and the sea witch helps her after fully outlining the drawbacks. She gets legs, loses her voice and unfortunately, she has found the only man in the world that prefers black haired girls to blonds. A cat tries to kill them and sea foam...

Marina is way too young to fall so in love so quickly, someone probably should have told her there are plenty of fish in the sea. I mean, she falls in love with a dork who plays the flute. The cat is just evil, not sure what its motivations are, even looked it up and it is just an evil cat. Fritz the dolphin is kind of annoying, not sure how he did not wind up in the Disney version, I am guessing Flounder edged him out for the role!

So, this one was not bad, but I think they should have done a bit better in areas. I mean, if the parents of the prince could understand the cat, then why couldn't the prince understand Fritz who could have told them that Marina is the one who saved him? Why could the cat speak at all? I thought maybe it was the sea witch, but apparently the sea witch was not evil and they were not the same (yes, I did read all this as the cat had a Wiki!) Still, it is kind of cool to see a more accurate depiction to the story...if only Marina were green...

An Underwater Discovery Superior To Disney's Due To The Ending.
Dawalk-130 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I came across this version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale by chance, which was when I caught part of it playing on a T.V. in a dentist's office. It was the part with Marina and her sisters featuring this nice song I liked. I might have seen one other part, involving Marina with the prince. Eventually, I would see those parts again, as well as the rest of the movie. But that song I mentioned is what I consider to be a highlight, I just became enamored with it and it became a favorite part of mine. It definitely set itself apart from Disney's version in some ways, especially towards the end. Since I haven't read the original, I found out the ending of that and this anime rendition are different from Disney's take. I know the ending in this is supposed to be just as much of a tearjerker and seeing that moment saddens me, but I don't actually cry out my eyes. Still, nonetheless, Marina's death, which manifests as her dissolving into sea foam and bubbles ascending into heaven, is somewhat hard for me to take and I can hardly manage to get through it. Truly gut-wrenching and I warn anyone who isn't fond of things that are too maudlin either to look away or skip that part altogether if nobody reading this can get through that at all. Anderson's version and this remake are not for the faint of heart, even if it may be better than Disney's as far as the ending goes in that it mirrors it's faithfulness to the initial, as that has been pointed out by other reviewers on here.

Anyone who has read, heard, and/or seen any version of this story already knows exactly what it's all about, so in that case, it goes without explanation. To name a couple of differences between the heroine in this and the one in Disney's are their names. The former is named Marina and is a blonde, whereas the latter is named Ariel and is a redhead. All in all, the whole presentation is stunning. Not only one of the best renditions of Anderson's tale ever made, but also among the best anime. Recommended, especially for that stunning song.

Great movie of love and loss
kittiluvr26 January 2005
I saw this Anime version of Little Mermaid when I was 8 or 9 years old, long before Disney got there happy little hands on it. I cried my eyes out at the end of it. However, it showed me that you don't always get what you want in life. It also taught me about sacrificing for someone you love. I believe the original version of this movie gets across a poignant message about sacrifice, love and loss. (If you read the story, there is much more to it than that, but as far as the movie goes, that is the message I saw in it.)

I was very disappointed in Disney's version at first. I didn't have to wait to see the ending to be upset at it. Ariel/Marina was not supposed to be able to talk, never mind being able to sing, and she was supposed to have pain when she walked....part of her sacrifice to be with the prince she had fallen in love with. And then, being a Disney version, she gets the prince in the end. I did not like it. Now, there is nothing wrong with optimism and believing things can get better and end happily. However, life does not always end "Happily Ever After" as Disney would have children believe. I think our overindulged children of today would be better off knowing that you don't always get what you want and that there is such a thing as sacrifice.

Well, I have grown to accept and even enjoy Disney's version. It is lighthearted and fun. And that is what Disney is all about.... fun and enjoyment.

In the end, I still love the original Anime version of it better. I didn't actually remember it as being Anime until I started searching for this version. Reading the comments on it helped me to recall the big beautiful eyes of the characters. Yes, this is the version I remember and love from my childhood....tears and all!

ORIGINAL LITTLE MERMAID
Summerskye6818 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I grew up watching this as a kid back in the 70's.

It makes me cry every time I watch the ending with Fritz screaming for Marina.

I love how the start of the film examines Denmark where the legendary storyteller Hans Christian Anderson was from and also the ending of the film showing the Little Mermaid statue sitting on the rock looking out to the sea for her beloved since 1913.

I highly recommend this film.

Truly Magical
foreveryesterdaysnews22 July 2006
To be honest, I have yet to find an animated film that is so emotional and beautiful. I don't have the film anymore, and I am currently looking for one... no such luck so far as it is quite a rare film.

The thing that makes this film so different to the Disney version is the fact that it depicts the true story of the Little Mermaid. Its not embellished with comedy, or soften to provide the audience with gratification, knowing that the mermaid will find happiness... this is not the case whatsoever...

I love the film dearly. There aren't a lot of films that I would go out of my way to search for.... By the way, If you have a copy that you are willing to sell to me, drop me a line..please! lol

A good movie
abbylee51910 April 2002
When I first saw this movie, I hated it. I was outraged by how the Prince chose someone else over her (the mermaid rescued the Prince from drowning, but ducked away when she saw the other human girl coming, and the other girl sat with him until he fully regained consciousness). He assumed that girl saved his life, and she apparently never had the grace to admit that someone else had done the dirty work of hauling him out of the ocean--she just happened to be hanging out sunbathing, waiting for him to wake up.

So, I was pretty mad at this movie, but then I read the Hans Christian Andersen story years later, when I'd experienced my own first love and loss. I gained a new appreciation for this movie, as it depicts a desperate love, and this mermaid is willing to give up everything to be close to him. The only thing that sucks is that the object of her obsession truly does not deserve it, and the chick he chooses over her does not deserve his love either; he fell in love with her only because he thought she had saved him, but the mermaid was unable to tell him that.

It's sad, and frustrating, but still a good movie overall.

A Good Anime Film For Those Who Outgrew Disney's Adaptation
jeremycrimsonfox6 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid (as it is called in English) was released 14 years before the more popular and well-known adaptation made by Disney. Created by Toei Animation (the company responsible for anime like Dragonball and Sailor Moon), the film follows Marina, a mermaid princess who falls in love with Prince Justin, this anime film is not for younger kids. It follows the original tale more closely than Disney did, meaning the tragic ending is still in place, and the film has nudity that some parents may find inappropriate for their young children (especially since the mermaids are topless, with hair providing strategic censorship, especially when Marina turns into a human). So, this Little Mermaid is more for the older audience who outgrew Disney's adaptation and has at least read the original tale to know what it's really about.

Other than that, it is a good movie. The voice actors all do a good job, and the animation is beautiful. I recommend seeing this one.

The definitive adaptation of the tale by Hans Christian Andersen
Elvis-Del-Valle2 June 2023
Before Disney, Toei Animation has managed to make an adaptation that respects the original story in many ways. This animated film has not completely modified the original story, it has remained quite attached to it, even though it has been adapted for children. The film respects the essence of the original story and narrates its tragic plot as it is. The tone is childish of course, but its plot remains just as dramatic and tragic, as it is in the story. Marina definitely steals the whole movie and is an endearing enough character to feel sorry for, after all she lives until the end of the movie. His dolphin companion Fritz is a cute and lovable character. In addition, it reflects what one feels when he ends up empathizing with Marina. Toei Animation's animation brings a lot of life and flavor to the film, making it delightful. The soundtrack even helps a lot to create a convincing feeling when the story turns sadder and more melancholy. As an animated film it's hard to say it beats the Disney animated version, so the two are tied. But as an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen tale, this film is undoubtedly the most faithful and for that alone it manages to surpass the Disney version. My final rating for this movie is 9/10.

Wow, breathtaking and beautiful
mandaloolu3 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie as a child and it was very sad but very moving. It left you with a feeling of awe. The ending is absolutely heart-wrenching, watching her little friend jumping out of the see over and over again calling out her name as she turns into the sea foam. I don't think they make animation quite like this anymore. What else can I say? Sure, the Disney version is light-hearted and fun but easily forgettable. This is the true story, and the emotional intensity of it has stayed with me throughout my life. Even as a child I understood to some extent the sacrifices that were made from Marina, and from her sisters in the sea. The sea witch wasn't necessarily 'evil with a vendetta' either (as in the dumbed down Disney version),she was just a sea witch. But none of her magic came without a price. She also made it possible for Marina to come back- if she would plunge a knife into the prince's heart. This scene is very intense in the movie, watching her with the dagger; the prince and his lover entwined and asleep. You can see and feel the torn emotions Marina feels and in the end she cannot do it. A truly unforgettable movie that pulls at your heart strings

Beautiful and poignant anime classic
TheLittleSongbird2 March 2011
I love Hans Christian Andersen's story, it is charming and beautiful with memorable characters. And this anime film is the closest in tone to the story to any other adaptation I've seen(not many but there are a few). I love the Disney film as well and prefer it just by a small margin, but I find this one just as beautiful and poignant if not more so.

While the animation is not the best there is, it is still quite nice with fluid backgrounds, pretty colours and well drawn characters. The music is tender and gives the film its heart, while the writing is wonderfully poetic and the story still has its magic and tenderness with well-explored themes of love and loss.

The characters are engaging still. Marina is a great protagonist and a beautiful one too, while the Prince, King, Fritz and the Witch are well done too and all the characters are very well voiced in both the original and dubbed versions. I love how there wasn't too much comedy to interrupt the flow or spoil the mood. Oh, and the ending has me in floods of tears every time I watch it.

This anime version of The Little Mermaid isn't completely perfect, some of the sound is a little hazy and the lip synching is occasionally sloppy, but overall it is wonderful. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Definitely not Disney, haunting, true to the original story
lajarboe24 July 2004
I would like to defend this movie as user Josephine left a very angry review. I'm sorry if you saw this as a small child and are forever traumatized but your review is very incomplete, not to mention the you speak of things that were never in the movie including saying that the prince "marries another prostitute" the mermaid drowns herself, and that there is beheading in the film. I don't really understand why you would lie about what happens in a movie on the review. Perhaps you just really hate this movie..anger issues?

This movie is early anime. It is not bad anime, the animation simply is not as complex as the animation we see today, after all, the movie was made in 1975. The movie is definitely for older children, I saw it as a little girl when I was five and loved it, however it is important to realize that the end is very tragic. It can be very upsetting for young or sensitive children. There is no happily ever after, nor was there in the original story by Hans Christian Anderson. The movie begins very much in the way a child's movie would..juvenile dialogue, etc. but takes a rather tragic and serious turn. Understand that anime tends to be very different from Disney.

It is not the happy, fictionalized fiction you would see in Disney's Little Mermaid or Aladdin. Clearly, many like this movie, as it is always selling on eBay, sometimes at rather high bids. There was something about this movie that I loved as a little girl, and still do. I can't clearly define what it is. Perhaps it was refreshing to see something so different. It could be a little cheesy at times, but all children's movies are to a degree. I enjoyed it, many of my friends enjoyed it, I certainly would not recommend renting it for your Friday night dinner and a movie. But is it worth seeing? I think so. It depends on what you are looking for.

I grew up on this movie and I love it!
roxieft-15 May 2007
This is a true Hans Christian Anderson film. I grew up reading Hans Christian Anderson. Not all his stories but The Little Mermaid for sure. I grew up on this 1975 film. I don't ever remember not liking it. Then as I got older I watched it again. I always cry because it is very sad. Life is not always happy.

I think whenever I needed a good cry I would watch this film just to cry. I haven't watched it in years but I do own it on video. And when my little girl is old enough I will show it to her.

This is a Classic Film. I do really like Disney's version, but in a different way.

I love this adaption
mizznana-5609030 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this first when I was around 5/6 years old and loved it. Preferred the Disney when I was a child, but still loved this one as well. Now as an adult I have a different love and understanding for this adaption than I did when I was younger. It's nothing like the Disney version. The sea witch is not the villain, the father is not overprotective, there is no rule against going to the surface when your of age. It's very different. There are things that were not added that were in HCA's book, but this is closest to the book along with the short of the little mermaid from fairy tale theatre. This story teaches about sacrifice, about pain, about loss, about feeling let down. It is, in a sense, spiritual, compared to the Disney adaption.

If you want a happy ending and the Disney magic, got with the Disney version. If you want a good cry, a tragedy and a version that is closer to the book, watch this version.

Another version that is similar to this one and closer to the book is "Fairy tale theatre's The Little Mermaid." It is not a fancy or high budget production, it's definitely dated, but it is similar to this and live action.

An Amazing Film,,,
jessika-19723 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I grew up on Disney films like most people, considering I'm only 14 now. :D But I recently stumbled across this film on Youtube, divided into 8 parts and decided to watch it. I absolutely fell in love with the movie. Obviously the animation isn't as stunning as Disney's, but i's still beautiful in it's own way. it was anime in the 70's after all. But Marina was everything I'd imagined a mermaid to be, she was sweet and beautiful in a way that wasn't in your face like Ariel always was IMO. I don't mind the nudity, it's something I'd personally expect from living in the ocean, because damn those seashell bras would hurt. The Prince was just like I imagined, the sea witch was actually scary (indeed she was) and Fritz was an adorable character (he seemed more like a friend, than a companion like the Disney film). I pity the Prince in this movie, when he realized that Marina was the girl who saved him, I can only imagine how bitter his life must have become. He lost his true love, and instead got some dumb b***H who didn't even have the courtesy to tell him she wasn't the one who saved him. The heartbreaking story is something that will stick with me for along time I've always known the Little Mermaid was supposed to die, but until recently I never knew she had the choice. This movie showed me what true love really is: Willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for love, and it also reminded me that not everyone gets the happy ending. Not my best review, but this movie made me feel a lot. It made me think unlike Disney's version, and it spurred a new found interest in fairy tales again (the originals) and led me to find some other beautiful retelling's of this story (The Russian one from the 60's was good too). Anyone who thinks this film is inappropriate for children, I highly disagree. This film teaches valuable lessons, and is a beloved tale children have been hearing for years. I only wish I'd been ale to see this as a child. Anyone looking for this movie can watch it one Youtube ( Username NieuAnimeTV ) or buy it one Amazon for 5 dollars. All worth it.

First full lenght-anime with a woman acting as the director of animation, and what a blast!
TooKakkoiiforYou_32114 January 2022
In my quest to gather more information about Reiko Okuyama, one of the first women to work in the anime field and animator of my favourite movie of all times, the feminist masterpiece Kanashimi No Belladonna, I happen to stumble upon the name of this movie as the first thing she directed alone in the animation department. What I can say? It's simply AMAZING in every regards, animation music voice acting everything has written all over it "anime classic you must watch before you die". The only downside I can find out of this is that if you're the kind of people who go crazy about inconsistencies there's a few of them here, but I don't blame it on the people who did this anime but on the original Hans Christian Andersen's material. Old fairy tales are known to be not particularly spot on in the consistency department, so...other than that, it's SUPER HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A faithful adaptation of the original tale
Motsa8 September 2003
If you grew up on bouncy, sanitized Disney videos and slick animation and not written fairy tales, this film may not be your cup of tea. Unlike Disney's happily-ever-after version, this one fairly faithfully recreates the fairy tale written by Hans Christian Anderson. Yes, inevitably, a little of the 70s creep into the artwork but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it gives this film a unique look and feel (which wasn't meant to be anime as we know it now). Like most fairy tales, it can be dark and sad and violent. It's the nature of the genre. But we still read them to our children and our children are still thrilled by them, as we were and as our parents were.

This adaptation is starkly beautiful and tragic. In the early to mid 70s, it aired on TV every Christmas along with other animated shorts like The Selfish Giant and The Happy Prince (two more tearjerkers). Even now, 30 years after I first saw it, it can reduce me to tears...but that doesn't stop me watching it.

In short, if you adore Disney's take on this story, then you'll probably be disappointed by this one. On the other hand, if you loved the fairy tale (or if you enjoyed The Selfish Giant or The Happy Prince animated shorts) then give this a try.

I loved this movie
sodapopbabe28128 June 2005
This movie was great I literally cried at the end when Marina turned to foam. I feel bad for Fritz the most because he lost his best friend in the world *TEAR*. And when she gave up her voice someone she loved who was forced to marry someone he thought saved him but she didn't it was all Marina. If I was Marina I wouldn't have gave up my voice and left the sea for a man who I don't know anything about. Also her sisters were very heartfelt and brave to give their hair to the sea witch to try to save Marina. But I don't get how she can be happy dying instead of getting rid of the prince and returning to the sea. I guess that is what true love is all about. Marina is sweet and I think more people should be like her if everyone was the world would be a better place!

Tender film, definitely love it
dulce_sirenita_30 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I think this is a very beautiful film about love risking and live for love... It is a great version of Hans Christian Tale.. Is a sad story but well, the original story was like that. You can't be expecting a happy ending. But I definitely like it. Marina is a beautiful and sweet mermaid, I love how they draw her because she's very cute. Many people don't like the drawings and animation, but it was a 70s movie and for me it looks great. Also I'm so into vintage stuff and I love oldies. I know that they show nudity in this film and is not for children, is for young adults and all that appreciate anime classics. This movie makes me cry because it gives so much impact and a beautiful message of love. The people that don't like this film, definitely don't appreciate old anime and didn't know that the real true story has a sad ending. I would love to see this film again on DVD someday because now is out of stock.

Wow amazing and beautiful movie
hanokuriyama29 May 2005
This movie not only stays true to the the real version of the "Little mermaid" but it does it gracefully.

Unlike Disney's the "little mermaid" which totally changed the ending, this version stays true to the tragic ending. Which makes the movie more impacting.

This movie came out in 1975, years before Disney's little mermaid, and is the best of the two in my opinion. It's an anime film and is beautifully done considering it was done in the mid 70's. Anderson Dowa's Ningyo Hime is a great movie, and should be more appreciated. I give it a perfect score of 10 stars. As it deserves.

True to the original story, sad but graceful and beautiful
snowball-1518 January 2004
This is a very sad and beautiful tale, the way Hans Christian Andersen has intended it to be. Even more sad than this though is that mass audience now knows only the dumbed down Disney version, which actually is a clear case of plagiarism. What else is it if it takes the original story and changes the ending??? Of course the rights to do that were properly purchased, at least I think so. But now we do not even have a chance to see true version ever released on DVD, as it justly deserves.
