An excellent picture; fantastic performances.
Peter_Young22 May 2010
Hrishikesh Mukherjee could never disappoint. Nor could Gulzar. Here Mukherjee directs a film scripted by Gulzar and the result is an excellent film in all respects - real, intelligent, moving. The movie starts well and keeps growing on you as it proceeds.

This is a story of two brother-like friends, Somu (Khanna) and Vicky (Bachchan). Somu lives a poor lifestyle with his mother and sister while Vicky is the son of a wealthy businessman who runs a huge factory in Bombay. When Vicky's father has a heart attack and is advised to take bed-rest, Vicky takes his place. He has a confrontation with the union leader, Bipinlal, as a result of which a strike takes place and he is forced to apologise in public. He confides Somu about his humiliation, and the two plan to take revenge on the poor honest man. Somu poses as a labourer in the factory, befriends his fellow-workers, wins their confidence by arranging them several contrived benefits, and ultimately takes Bipilal's place as the union leader. But while the mission gets completed, Somu finds it difficult to leave. He gradually gets close to the people and gets increasingly involved with their life troubles, which makes him look at things differently.

This social drama is brilliantly written - an interesting story, a tight conflicted script, awesome dialogues. Mukherjee's direction is excellent as always, and the film is brilliantly executed. The depiction of poverty and hardship among people from the lower middle class is spot on and at points really manages to tug at your heartstrings. That makes it easier to understand Somu's involvement with the world of simple villagers, a world he actually belongs to but an involvement which could smash his friendship with Vicky. This conflict of interests is well brought out by Mukherjee. The film of course presents a clash of opposing economic worlds, but it works essentially because of the human relationship between the two friends, which is extremely well done. Somu and Vicky are very different, the former being soft-spoken, simple and generous, and the latter being hot-tempered, proud and a bit aggressive. Yet their friendship is convincing and it's clear that each one of them would do anything for the other.

Rajesh Khanna plays Somu exceedingly well, and his character is very easy to relate to. But it is clearly Amitabh Bachchan's film. As Vicky, he delivers an impressive performance by creating a tough, dignified and stylish persona. His decisiveness, inner conflict, anger and care for a friend are excellently displayed, and everything--from his facial expressions to his line delivery to his body language--is incredibly forceful. Apart from Bachchan and Khanna, the cast includes many good actors, all of whom perform well. A very young Rekha appears in a tiny role as the sassy Shyama and she is very charming. Simi Garewal plays the intelligent and educated Manisha with grace. A.K. Hangal is outstanding and likable as Bipinlal. Om Shivpuri does a good job as Vicky's dad and he gets some of the better dialogues in this film. Raza Murad is wonderful as Alam, an alcoholic poet who befriends Somu. So are Durga Khote and actress Manisha who play Somu's mother and sister.

Namak Haram is one of many great films made by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and written by Gulzar, with a beautiful soundtrack composed by master RD Burman and some memorable performances. I recommend you to watch Namak Haram - it is entertaining, it is moving, it is heartbreaking, it is a classic.

I am impressed
harrissajjids7 June 2010
I have just seen the movie Namak Haraam. I am stunned. I cannot understand why this movie is ignored on TV channels. It has everything which makes a movie great. It has story, drama, enchanting songs and above all amazing performance by two great actors Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh. The story is predictable but the plot and presentation make it absorbing. It has some occasions to shed tears also. Character study of Amitabh and Rajesh is quite deep. Both the actors are my favourites. Amitabh with his imposing style and Rajesh with his soft loving style of acting are two poles apart. But they fit like gems in their respective characters. This movies has become my top five favourites of Rajesh Khanna with Dushman, Amar Prem, and Anand.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's another winner
silvan-desouza9 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Hrishikesh Mukherjee after ANAND(1971) and BAWARCHI(1972) 2 superhits with Rajesh Khanna returned with NAMAK HARAAM(1973). When Anand(1971) had released Amitabh was a newcomer whose career was going through bad phase and RK was the king. But when NH released Amitabh had suddenly gained stardom with ZANJEER(1973) and Rajesh Khanna's career started going downhill. It seems that Rajesh Khanna was scared of Big B's career heights and it seems used his power to change the ending of the film and there were lot of clashes between the 2 personally and after this film the two never acted together, while Big B went on to become the numero uno superstar Rajesh Khanna's career never was the same ever more and went downhill. Back to the movie.... NAMAK HARAAM is based on capitalism versus common man, A superb concept which shows how the bureaucrats dominate over the poor common man. The film deals with issues of common labourers who work in a factory owned by Om Shivpuri. The main concept is on the friendship between Khanna and Big B. The film starts off in present time just like ANAND(1971) with a spectacled Big B in shawl coming out of jail and then we go into flashback mode when he sees Rajesh Khanna's frame. The first half has more of fun scenes like Amitabh and Khanna both wearing same clothes, the scene at the lawyer's office, The drunk scene between AB and RK is funny too, with Big B showing the spark of drunk scenes which he was going to be known for much later. The story takes a turn when Big B has a clash with Vipinlal(A K Hangal) which results in RK taking a job as a labourer. The scene where Big B asks for forgiveness is superb, The bonding between friends is superbly handled too. There are several touching scenes like Amitabh's scenes with Om Shivpuri, Raza Murad's scenes with RK, The manner in which Khanna starts feeling for the workers, The clash between Amitabh and Khanna. The climax is superb too Direction by Hrishida is superb, his penchant for dramatic and emotional scenes is evident Music by RD Burman is superb too, All songs were picturised on Rajesh Khanna and sung by Kishore Kumar except for Vote Na Usko Dena and their pairing together is superb, Diye Jalte Hai picturised on Khanna and Amitabh is a superb song on friendship, while Nadiya Se Dariya is superb too and also Main Shayar Badnaam which is very emotional Dialogues are superb Amongst actors In ANAND Rajesh Khanna was the main role and Big B had a smaller role, but here their screen space was almost equal though Rajesh Khanna still is in the lead, He does an awesome job, Hrishida always brought out the best in his actors and it's evident here too, He does a superb job Amitabh Bachchan too is superb as Vicky the spoilt brat, it seems Hrishida cast both as he wanted them to play opposite roles then ANAND where Khanna had the outspoken character and Big B was subdued, here Amitabh is shown as a hotheaded Angry Young Man, while Khanna is subdued. Amitabh Bachchan delivers a credible performance, and this was an indication of things to come, though he tends to get loud in the film but it suits the character Rekha is unrecognisable and does an average job in a small role Simi Garewal is superb Om Shivpuri is excellent, A K Hangal who was a regular in Hrishida films does a superb job too, Asrani another regular does a good job too Amongst rest Raza Murad in a distinct role of an alcoholic poet is awesome, Durga Khote is as usual, rest are okay

Strangely after this film which was an average at the box office, Hrishida worked more with Big B in CHUPKE CHUPKE, MILI, AlAAP.etc and did only one film with Khanna NAUKRI(1978) which flopped NAMAK HARAAM is a superb film to watch even today

A communist flick
vishal_wall6 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Namak Haram is a communist film. If Karl Marx had seen it he would have been proud of Hrishida and Gulzar sahib for understanding the class difference so correctly. The film doesn't only talk about bourgeoisie and proletariat conflict but also give a realistic insight into the the lives in both classes. The story is simple and brilliant. Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna are best friends. Amitabh (Vicky) is rich kid and Rajesh Khanna (Somu) is doing not so well. Somu lives off his friend shamelessly as they are best of pals. Domestic complications beget Vicky to run his father's big company. He has a foolish fight with the union leader (AK Hangal) and is made to apologize in public. He can't handle the embarrassment and decides to secretly plant his friend in the union to avenge his humiliation. The friend does every thing right for him until he wins the election. Here Somu sees the other side of the world to which he actually belongs. He removes his hand from the scheme hence 'Namak Haram'.

I have seen this movie more than 25 times and always love it at some or the other level. During his conversion Somu meets a drunkard 'Raza Murad' who is a poet and sells kites. This probably is Raza Murads best performance. He calls Somu 'Bandhu' and he is the one who shows Somu dark side of the society. The scenes after scenes are heart breaking and heavily sentimental. Poverty, flesh trade, medical problems, black-marketing, treachery and forgery you name it and movie talks about it directly. The range of the movie is wide. Story and Script overshadows the brilliant music of the movie given by RD Burman. There are a very few political song writers in India and Gulzar sahib is one of them. "Wo Jhoonta Hai" is a fantastic song done on stage in the film when Somu is campaigning against the Union leader played by veteran legendary actor AK Hangal. The best of the dialogs are delivered by Om Shivpuri who plays Vicky's father and represent "haute "bourgeoisie. My favorite scene in the movie is where Bacchan says to his father "Dad Daal Ka Bhav Kitna Badh Gaya Hai" and his father says "Tumhe Kisne Daal Ka Bhav Bataya?" That's the essence of the movie. Manmohan does a fantastic job like Aradhna.

The movie was made during the rise of Amitabh and downfall of Rajesh Khanna and so it seems there were conflicts about the end of the movie. Rajesh Khanna used his stardom and changed the end of the movie. Hrishida told Bacchan "Don't worry you will be a bigger star before the release of this movie". Indeed. Great entertainment, great music, great acting, great message. 10 on 10.

an excellent movie
alokc1 May 2007
Namak Haraam is about two friends and how gradually social status comes in between them but they remain friends and sacrifice for each other. This Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie had some excellent music by R D Burman. Whereas in Anand, Amitabh had a small role here he has a parallel role against the Super Star Rajesh Khanna and both have done their role well. Amitabh has a loud role as against the soft role of Superstar and thus Amitabh got noticed in the movie. This is the second and last time that Rajesh and Amitabh acted in a movie ever. However, the movie is a classic epic and tale of two friends which is a must see for both Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan fans and here they will be able to make out what Super Star Rajesh Khanna was all about - the best emotional and romantic hero in India ever.

Two of the greatest performances of Indian cinema.
sanjay086423 February 2002
Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachan put in two of the best performances of Indian cinema. Although Amitabh Bachan in a louder role got more praise from the masses, it is Rajesh Khanna in a role that required underplaying, who is the heart of the film and whose acting performance is as good if not better than that of Amitabh. This is not to say that Amitabh puts in a truly great acting performance (one of his best). The film itself is excellent and is another tribute to the greatness and versatility of Hrishikesh Mukherjee (director). Quite simply put, it is in the 'MUST NOT MISS' category. By the way the excellent music is also a real plus.

Amitabh Rules
kichdi10 June 2012
Amitabh portrays the role of an arrogant son of an industrialist, Rajesh Khanna who is very close friend of Amitabh in this movie goes on the pursuit to avenge Amitabh's insult by a worker but ends up being a worker himself to know the cause why the worker insulted his closest friend. Amitabh does not have any songs in the movie, whereas all songs were sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna. The comparison between Amitabh & Rajesh Khanna is unfair in this movie as songs are an integral part of Indian Cinema. Although they both are of equal calibre in acting abilities, it was 51 Amitabh & 49 Rajesh Khanna (Kaka as he was fondly known as). Despite all the songs, Amitabh was a shade better.

People call Amitabh's angry young man roles are as stereo type, but they conveniently forget that Rajesh Khanna's many hit movies have the same ending when Rajesh Khanna would evoke maximum sympathy & for no reason would die in the end. Aap Ki kasam, Babu & Namak Haraam to name a few. He invariably requested many directors to kill his character in the end so that he gets more support emotionally from the audience, which was a successful formula for the movie makers of those times. Of course Rajesh Khanna had the knack of selecting better stories than Amitabh who was more interested in using his charisma than the story lines. For Rajesh Khanna, he always used to get the best playback singer Kishore Kumar, the best music by RD Burman & his own supreme acting ability to make a movie run. Amitabh, even the poorest script would make the film run because of him. Amitabh is the cause of poor Cinema in Bollywood now, his craze for any film ruined the quality. Latest heroes (including all khans) all follow Amitabh & not the quality oriented Kaka. Amitabh would suit in any role but Rajesh Khanna he was a misfit as an action hero or angry young man. This shows that Amitabh could do any Rajesh Khanna role but not vice versa.

Overall this Namak Haraam also portrays Om Shivpuri & AK Hangal in powerful roles. The heroes were at their supreme best after Anand where again the battle was equally fought, Rajesh Khanna having lot larger role.

In no comparison to "Anand"
SumanShakya18 September 2018
A friend infiltrating a labor community to avenge the humiliation of his best friend, a mill owner, just to change his side forms the crux of this film starring a legendary star duo, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan following "Anand." Undoubtedly, the story is pretty genuine in comparison to the formulaic capers; but in comparison to "Anand," it stands nowhere close in terms of performances, roles, or narration. The first half is marred by its improbabilities and cheaper gags while the ending fails to address the issues it raises on capitalists. Just a cool advice: don't miss "Anand" but go for it for an on screen clash of the star duo where Amitabh Bachchan gives rise to his angry young man image.

One of Bachchan and Khanna's best.
planktonrules10 March 2014
This film teams the two biggest stars of the day--Rajesh Khanna as Somu and Amitabh Bachchan as Vikram. It's an interesting film from start to finish and it has a lot to say--much more than a typical Bollywood film.

When the film begins, Somu and Vikram are two friends that are closer than brothers. Although Vikram is quite rich, he shares what he has with Somu and his family--and neither work. They mostly hang out and have fun together during the first portion of the film. However, when Vikram learns that his father has had a heart attack, his entire life changes. Because of his dad's illness, Vikram's days of playing are over and he has to run his father's company. However, Vikram shows himself to be a horrible boss--and he treats his employees like dirt. He also is quite distrustful of them and hates the union representative, so he contacts his friend Somu and asks him to come to the city and help him with running the place. The plan is for Somu to pose as a disgruntled employee with a lot of guts and eventually get the employees to elect Somu as their union representative--a representative in the pocket of the company, so to speak.

Through the course of Somu's time at the company, however, his attitude changes. While he still loves Vikram, he cannot hear about the plight of his fellow workers without feeling for them as well as resenting the way Vikram is taking advantage of his workers. And, over time, the two friends drift farther and farther apart. What's next? See the film--it's worth it.

Apart from Vikram taking responsibility for a crime he did not commit (and this made little sense to me), there's an awful lot to like about this film. The two actors are quite good and the plot is a wonderful social commentary. The film also seemed to have a bit of a gay subtext, as the two leads really, really like each other...a lot. Well worth your time and well-crafted.

Review By Kamal K

This film brilliantly depicts the economic depression era of the 70s through the legends such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. How well the bad condition of workers has been shown through the medium of Friendship of two persons. It is a must watch film for each and every Indian and hats of to Hrishikesh Da and other actors who excelled in their respective works.

An ode to the intense relationship between two men
jnswamy4 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Hat tip to Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar for pulling off a meaningful film based on friendship and betrayal, against the backdrop of capitalism vs. trade unionism, sans overt romancing and singing that was the hallmark of the early 70's, all with some top commercial stars of the era! Flawless in execution, tracing the emotional arc of the two protagonists, Vicky and Somu.

Amitabh as Vicky is intense and possessive. Rajesh as Somu/ Chander is exuberant and people-friendly. The emotional bond between them transcends mellow understanding of each others needs, it covers the gamut. It would be insultingly incestuous to call this bond 'brotherly'. If this movie were made in contemporary times high voltage passion bordering on obsession would be central to the Vicky-Somu relationship!

Vicky has faced the biggest humiliation of his life to date from the union leader Hangal. He flies from Bombay to Delhi and waits in Chander's bedroom to unburden. And Chander, stricken to see Vicky in tears, decides to 'infiltrate' the trade union and dethrone the leader. Later, one night, covered in an old blanket, Vicky pays Somu a visit in his basti. His fleeting reactions on seeing Somu flirt with the neighbor's girl (Rekha) should be seen to understand the depth of his feelings. The most poignant yet understated scene comes towards the end of the movie, where Vicky is grateful to his friend (Simi) for her ability to understand the transformation in Somu while he himself is unable to grapple with it!

If all of the above is not obsessive love, what is? When movies of those times shied away from showing kissing/ bedroom scenes even between a man-woman how could they have shown one between two men? Plus a man-man relationship had full societal sanction as long as any sexual attraction was shrouded in 'total denial'. While we know not if this was the director's intention there is more than mere sub-text in this movie, to suggest deep love transcending teh platonic between the two characters. And I say this in a noble way not judgmental, not fantasizing.

In contrast, Vicky's feelings for Simi are unshakably platonic, even though she harbors a romantic interest. Somu's flirting with Rekha does not culminate in any more intimacy either. It was the height of irony to watch the two scenes where both Amitabh and Rekha (who reportedly engaged in a real life romantic relationship a few years later!) grief strickenly watch their common object of love (Rajesh) who is in pain!

Asrani, Hangal, Manmohan, Raza Murad and Om Shivpuri lend strong support, making their characters credible. RD Burman's music has 3 chartbusters sung by Kishore and picturized on Rajesh Khanna. The mujra song however is utterly forgettable. The sequence was unnecessary as well, and probably added on for commercial reasons only. One of the reasons why I did not give the movie a 10 star rating.

Both Amitabh and Rajesh have 'lead' roles. Since Rajesh was a bigger star at the time, Amitabh was billed a supporting actor. While both give flawless performances, Amitabh does make the bigger impact of the two. His brooding role tinged with sorrow, the lower expectations attached to him at the time, that he was present in both the first and last frames of the movie, may all have contributed to this impact.

Namak Haram - Classic Superhit Film of Rajesh Khanna
shrikant-narayanan22 March 2011
Namak Haram is a great classic film well directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and written swiftly by Gulzar with wonderful performance by all cast members and yes here quite obviously Rajesh Khanna's performance overshadows Amitabh's acting. Rajesh Khanna proves that he is indeed a versatile superstar yet again in this film. Each film of Rajesh Khanna saw him playing a totally different character Amar Pram Naya Kadam,Babu, Kudrat,Hum Dono, Palkon Ki Chaon Me,Tyaag,Anand,Aap Ki Kasam,Redrose etc....(107 films had Khanna in solo-lead role and just 21 multi-star movies of which 81 super-hits at box office.rest are 35 films where he was not the main lead and made guest appearances) When Rajesh Khanna is the hero you always have had Amitabh or Vind Khanna or Shahsi Kapoor or Vinod Mehra playing supporting roles and never ever as the leading man of the film or Rajesh in supporting role to them.I give 10 out of 10.

an excellent movie centrally characterized by Rajesh Khanna
jatinram6 August 2006
It is one of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee classics of all time Hindi film world. The storyline of this film is of very high standard in comparison with usual Bombay films. It is a very sober social film with simple living and high thinking. There have been a lot of discussions, controversies, etc. about Rajesh-Amitabh comparison in terms of acting calibre. In my opinion in this film, Rajesh Khanna has very ably portrayed the middle class character of Somu, who is completely depended upon his rich friend financially and later changed as a serious factory mechanic and gradually turns as trade union leader, called Chander when mixed up with labourer society. Rajesh Khanna always proves himself as an unparallel actor when different shades of one particular character is characterized by him. And the Namakram is not an exception. On the other hand Amitabh usually repeats his angry young man image, little bit more loud. However, he has shown some standard expression in one or two scenes at Jail. In brief in this film we find Rajesh Khanna as usual as a complete character called Somu/Chander, but Amitabh as the well known Angry Young Man, just like Janjeer, Deewaar, etc.

Excellent movie with 2 of the best actors of the era
anupn-7909711 August 2019
Two of the biggest actors Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh, the biggest stars of that era and both in author backed roles,

their acting and chemistry was so good and only the second time that we were fortunate to see them together on the screen,

the talented team of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar who bring the two stars together for one last time

Panchamda, the country's greatest composer (who thanklessly was never ever awarded a National award and has won only 2 filmfare awards during his lifetime, how is that even possible I dont know) weaving magic with Diye Jalte hain, Nadiya se dariya and main shayaar badnam,

I remember seeing namak haram on tv during my school days and being mesmerised by the performance of the lead stars and their friendship depicted on screen. I never found AB better than khanna or vice versa, they were equally competent in their roles.

Just to experience the performance of these two superstars, it is a total must see.

A superb film backed by strong acting.
sauravjoshi851 October 2022
Namak Haraam is a drama film directed by Late Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The film stars Late Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Asrani, Raza Murad, Late A. K. Hangal, Simi Garewal and Late Om Shivpuri.

Two best friends decide to exact revenge on the union leader by one of the friend joins the factory and starts working as a Labour. However, when the friend understands the plight of the workers, it creates a rift between the two friends.

What a great film by Hrishi da and this film truly shows his class as a director. Hrishi da had the talent to take the best out of every actor and this film is a prime example of it.

The plot of the film is good and execution is superb, the film is little predictable in nature but presentation is good and will keep you entertained. The film has good drama and is beautifully supported by mesmerizing songs.

Acting is superb and the strongest aspect of the film. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan both of them compliments each other very well and will give you the glimpse of another masterpiece film Anand but for me in this film Amitabh Bachchan outshone Rajesh Khanna and it seems that the death of the character of Rajesh Khanna backfired this time as the dialogues by Amitabh Bachchan in climax was stunningly great.

Music of the film his mesmerizing and almost all the songs were successful and is still looks great to listen. Climax of the film is strong. A must watch film for all the true cinema lovers.
