Lazenby said he plans to hang up his acting boots for good in a statement shared on social media this morning.
“This hasn’t been an easy decision but it’s time to announce my retirement from work. Therefore, I won’t be doing any more acting or making public appearances, doing any more interviews, or signing any more autographs as of today,” Lazenby wrote in his first of a series of retirement posts.

‘Emmanuelle’ Trailer: Noémie Merlant Stars In Audrey Diwan’s Reimagining Of The Popular Erotic Drama
The “Emmanuelle” film franchise is one of the most famous in film history. Beginning in 1974, the film series followed the title character as she experienced various erotic encounters. And after a trilogy of films, studios from around the world started to make their own “Emmanuelle” knockoff films, slightly altering the title to avoid copyright issues. (Who can remember “Emmanuelle in Space?”) But that said, there has never been an “Emmanuelle” film quite like the new one that is being released this year.

"Desire ebbs & flows, it evolves. And wears off, too..." Pathe in France has revealed the first official trailer for the new take on Emmanuelle, an erotic drama inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan's beloved novel. It was already adapted once before into a film in 1974, also titled Emmanuelle, though this is a fresh vision. Loosely adapted from Arsan's novel, director Audrey Diwan's film follows a woman flying alone to Hong Kong on a business trip where she initiates numerous encounters including with Kei, a man who constantly eludes her. Merlant co-stars with Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, Jamie Campbell Bower, Chacha Huang, Anthony Wong, among others. Oddly the film is skipping this year's Venice Film Festival, despite Diwan's win a few years ago,...

Early this morning, journalists congregated around Thierry Frémaux for the announcement of the 77th Cannes Film Festival Official Selection. The director shared titles from various sections, confirming some suspected rumors and setting the world of cinephilia abuzz. As ever, the main focus is on the Competition titles, as the next Palme d'Or may be among the films already announced. But of course, a project or two are usually added before the festivities start at the Croisette, so our champion may remain in mystery. Many predicted Audrey Diwan's Emmanuelle remake to be selected, for instance, but the Happening director was notoriously absent from today's dispatch.
In the past few years, The Film Experience has had two parallel coverages, and we hope to keep the tradition. There's Elisa Giudici on the ground, reviewing new films through her festival diary. And then there's my Cannes at Home project, focused...

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will kick off with Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” a star-studded surreal French comedy headlined by Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel and Raphaël Quenard, Variety has learned.
The anticipated movie is produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi, a Mediawan company, and is represented in international markets by Kinology. The film will play out of competition on May 14 and will be released on the same day in French theaters.
Laced with absurdist humor, the meta movie follows actors starring in a doomed film production. Dupieux is one of France’s most popular and prolific filmmakers. He delivered two films in 2023: “Daaaaaalí,” which played out-of-competition at Venice, and “Yannick,” a French box office hit that sold around the world.

At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford and Scarlett Johansson hit the red carpet to premiere their latest big movies. But Hollywood may have a much lighter presence at the 2024 edition of one of the world’s most notable film festivals.
The culprit is the combination of last year’s actors and writers strikes, which created production delays, as well as a tough economy that’s leading studios to tighten the purse-strings. But there will still be stars on the Croisette, in addition to “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who will be presiding over the jury.
Based on intelligence from industry insiders on both sides of the Atlantic, the upcoming edition will have a larger emphasis on European auteurs, along the lines of Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” which were each nominated for five Oscars.

Actor and filmmaker Valérie Donzelli will reteam with her “Just the Two of Us” co-writer Audrey Diwan – a Golden Lion winner with “Happening” – to pen “The Infinite Present Ends,” a literary adaption that Donzelli is slated to direct.
Based on a fictionalized 2015 memoir from psychiatric nurse Mary Dorsan, the text embeds within a teenage psychiatric ward over the course of a year, teasing out the complex bonds, challenges, frustrations and unexpected moments of grace shared between patients and caregivers. Though unflinching in its evocations of violence, the project’s central theme is that of sentimental education, per Donzelli.
“These social workers must find ways to love these children that are not their own,” Donzelli tells Variety. “They must find the right and constructive outlets for that love, so we want to explore this idea of education within the various forms of affection we give.”

Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts has joined the cast of “Emmanuelle,” Audrey Diwan’s highly anticipated erotic drama, Variety has confirmed.
Diwan’s follow-up to the Venice-prizewinning “Happening,” the film is inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel and is based on a script co-developed by Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski (“Other People’s Children”). The book centers on a woman and the series of erotic fantasies that she entertains. It was previously made into a 1974 film of the same name, directed by Just Jaeckin and starring Sylvia Kristel, which became a cult hit.
Watts revealed the news when she posted a now-deleted Instagram Story with “Emmanuelle” co-star Noemie Merlant, a critically acclaimed French actor who broke through in Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and made her English-speaking debut in Todd Field’s Oscar-nominated film “Tar.” Merlant plays the titular role in “Emmanuelle.” The rest of the cast comprises...

Exclusive: The success of Audrey Diwan’s sophomore feature Happening made her next gig as a filmmaker an intriguing one. Her choice of project, created even more intrigue.
As we first revealed last year, that project is English-language debut Emmanuelle, inspired by the character and world created by writer Emmanuelle Arsan, whose 1967 novel of the same name was adapted into the lucrative and cult 1970s soft-core movie starring Sylvia Kristel.
Diwan’s adaptation deviates from that earlier movie and from the source material. We confirmed casting and production details about the movie this morning here, including a first-look image of star Noémie Merlant.
Plot details have been kept under wraps, though Diwan told us last year that the contemporary movie will take place in a luxury hotel where Emmanuelle (Merlant) works and that it will “explore her quest for pleasure”. Unlike the original movie, this film will see its protagonist...

It's clear that writer/director David Gordon Green and his co-screenwriter Peter Sattler had to fight an uphill battle when making a sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 film "The Exorcist" in 2023. Not only did the filmmakers have to remain cognizant of what narrative ground the four or five previous films in the series had already covered (more on that number below), but they had to somehow rise above the thousands of "Exorcist" knockoffs that have arisen in the last 50 years to provide a fresh take on the material. No easy feat, seeing as how the Tubi library, as of this writing, currently has 49 films with "Exorcist" or "Exorcism" in the title. Apart from "Alien" and "Emmanuelle," "The Exorcist" may be one of the most imitated films in cinema history.
To address the "Exorcist" sequels, Green merely employed the same tactic as he did with his "Halloween" movies: ignore them entirely and reboot the story.

The Black Emanuelle films aren’t really a series in the proper sense of the word. True, they all star Indonesian-Dutch actress Laura Gemser, and she usually plays a globetrotting photojournalist called Emanuelle. (The single “m” in her name was used to avoid infringing on the copyright of Just Jaeckin’s 1974 softcore sensation Emmanuelle starring Sylvia Kristel.) But there’s no notion of continuity between installments (often the product of different teams of writers and directors), and, even though a core group of actors does turn up time and again, they always play different, unrelated characters. What unites these films, apart from Gemser’s presence, is their dedication to exploring sexuality in a frank and uninhibited manner.
Severin’s new box set, The Sensual World of Black Emanuelle, brings together all 21 of the Laura Gemser films, most of them newly restored from 2K scans of the original materials, as well...

If you are a Blu-ray collector, US-based distributor Severin is worth keeping tabs on, as their releases tend to be interesting, with many films getting proper treatment and great extras. Their boxset dedicated to folk-horror films is rightly the stuff of legends. So when earlier this year they announced that they were about to release their biggest and most ambitious boxset release yet, I was very excited. That deflated a bit when I heard the subject: the Black Emanuelle films. Wait. What?! They say you can't polish a turd. And no matter how beautiful Laura Gemser is, Black Emanuelle is hardly what you'd call a great film, a dubious cash-grab to leech on the success of another dubious film (Just Jaeckin's Emmanuelle). So what was...

Currently in pre-production phase and deep in the casting process, Audrey Diwan (who will be in Cannes as the head of the Critic’s Week jury) appears to have lassoed the actress she knows well for her highly anticipated buzzy third feature film. Golden Lion-winning Happening in Anamaria Vartolomei might have joined the project and would likely play one of the many Western ex-pats that are part of the main character’s entourage. As we already know, Noémie Merlant landed the top role in Emmanuelle – the one of the sexually adventurous wife. The project was co-written by Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski. It’s a particularly great moment for Vartolomei who might surface in Cannes next month (if they add the title in the last wave offerings) with Bruno Dumont’s L’Empire, and she is attached to play Maria Schneider in Jessica Palud’s Maria.…...

After she ascended to the Competition last year with Bergman Island, it’s bittersweet to see Mia Hansen-Løve back in the ranks of Directors’ Fortnight. On the one hand, it’s a testament to her versatility that she can switch back and forth so adeptly, but at the same time, it’s a little galling to see women’s stories apparently banished from the Official Selection when so many bromances make the cut every year. That’s not to say that One Fine Morning has anything radical to offer — the story of a single mother falling in love with her late husband’s (married) friend, it won’t win any prizes for advancing the feminist cause — but it does offer a very thoughtful character sketch, composed around what might be a career-best role for underused Bond star Léa Seydoux.

Audrey Diwan’s planned English language directing debut, the erotic tale Emmanuelle starring Lea Seydoux, has buyers buzzing as much as any Cannes Market package being shopped this week on the Croisette. But her last film Happening might have the most lasting impact. The film is just released in the U.S. smack in the middle of revelations that the Supreme Court plans to overturn Roe V Wade.

The Paris Theater, an NYC cinematic landmark rescued by Netflix in 2019, will officially reopen August 6 with the streamer’s The Forty-Year-Old Version by Radha Blank and a week of repertory films programmed by the director.
The only single-screen movie theater in Manhattan and the borough’s largest, with 545 seats, has hosted limited theatrical engagements since March that included Netflix’ 17 Oscar-nominated films, retrospectives of Charlie Kaufman and Orson Wells, zombie movie classics and a Bob Dylan film series.
The Paris closed in August of 2019 after its lease with City Cinemas expired. That November, Netflix entered an extended lease agreement, said to be for ten years with owner the Solow Family, to keep the theater open and use it for events, screenings and theatrical releases of its films. The first was Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. The theater was shuttered by Covid-19 last spring.

Paris-based Lincoln TV is set to reunite with the creative team behind “Mirage” on a period series about the turbulent life of Sylvia Kristel, the 1970’s sex symbol and star of the erotic film trilogy “Emmanuelle.”
Titled “Sylvia,” the six-part series will be based on Kristel’s 2006 autobiography “Nue” (“Naked”), in which the late actress chronicles her rise and tragic downfall.
Currently at the script stage, the series is being created and penned by Bénédicte Charles and Olivier Pouponneau, who previously wrote “Mirage” with Franck Philippon. Lincoln TV, the well-established banner founded by veteran producers Christine de Bourbon-Busset and Marc Missonnier, has acquired the audiovisual rights to Kristel’s autobiography from the publishing house Cherche-Midi.
The project is currently being shopped to key French channels and Lincoln TV is aiming to partner up with a Flemish co-producer.
“We think the story of Sylvia will strike a chord in the post-MeToo era.

Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre is in active negotiations to direct “Lady Chatterly’s Lover” for 3000 Pictures, led by Elizabeth Gabler.
“Life of Pi” scribe David Magee wrote the script.
Oscar nominee Laurence Mark and Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures are producing.
Based on the classic D.H. Lawrence novel, the story revolves around the life of Lady Chatterley, a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege, who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with. She engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible.
Lawrence’s risque novel has been adapted several times, including a 1981 version with “Emmanuelle” star Sylvia Kristel and a less-explicit 2015 TV version with Richard Madden.
Marisa Paiva and Nikki Cooper are the executives overseeing the project for 3000 Pictures.

Mediawan has acquired a majority stake in Radar Films, the French production company behind “Belle and Sebastian,” one of France’s most successful family movie franchises.
Headed by Clement Miserez and Matthieu Warter, Radar Films has been producing French and English-language films, teaming up with France’s top studios, including Gaumont and Snd. Besides “Belle et Sebastien” which traveled to dozens of territories, Radar Films also produced “The Secret” with Jessica Biel, and “The Love Punch” with Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson.
With Mediawan as its new owner, Radar Films will aim at ramping up its English-language production input, said Miserez. The producer said the banner will also start making ambitious TV series for French and international audiences.
“The media industry is going through turbulent times, especially in France with the upcoming audiovisuel reform, so forging an alliance with Mediawan is a great opportunity for an independent production company like Radar Films,...

Visionary graphic artist Philip Gips, the designer behind many of your favorite movie posters, died earlier this month on October 3 at the age of 88. His most iconic designs include the unforgettable one-sheets for “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Alien,” which portend the terror awaiting audiences without giving too much away, and he worked steadily beginning in 1968 all the way through the late 1980s.
Gips also memorably created the striking poster for 1976’s Academy Award-winning media satire “Network.” According to a recent obituary in The New York Times, “While designing a poster for ‘Network’ … Mr. Gips suggested that the unhinged news anchorman at the center of the story, Howard Beale (played by Peter Finch), be pictured strung up on a television antenna, as if he were being crucified.”
“The tagline was supposed to be ‘The Greatest Story Ever Sold,’” Michael Gips said in a phone interview with the Nyt. “But it was...
