Roger Corman, a pioneer of low-cost independent filmmaking and the godfather of B-movies who produced hundreds of genre films in a career spanning eight decades, has died. He was 98.
During a prolific career that started in the 1950s and encompassed all genre, Corman directed the 1960 original The Little Shop Of Horrors – reportedly shot in two days – as well as The Man With The X-Ray Eyes, The Trip, The Wasp Woman, The Masque Of The Red Death, House Of Usher, and The Raven – the last three counting among a number of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations.

Brandi Carlile has shared a cover of Indigo Girls’ “Closer to Fine,” which appears as a bonus cut on the “Best Weekend Ever Edition” of the Barbie soundtrack alongside star Ryan Gosling’s version of Matchbox Twenty’s classic hit “Push.”
Carlile and her wife, Catherine Carlile, transform the rollicking original version of “Closer to Fine” into an acoustic ballad intertwining their beautiful vocals. Stream it below.
“Closer to Fine” appears on Indigo Girls’ self-titled second studio album, which marked their first major label release when it came out in 1989. Carlile previously performed the song with the folk duo during a June 2008 show in Tucson, Arizona — one of the many times she’s appeared on stage with the pioneering group. They also appeared on “Cannonball” from Carlile’s 2007 album, The Story. Last year, she presented Indigo Girls with the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards.

In 2002, Avril Lavigne’s skate-punk aesthetic and emo-but-energized angst quickly made her the queen of the aughts pop-punk revival scene. Since her third album, 2007’s The Best Damn Thing, she’s ebbed and flowed, dipping her toes in bubblegum pop and more self-serious pop rock. Her seventh album, Love Sux, brings her back to her roots, bridging the gap between her early emo vibe with the bubblegum confidence that brought her away from it.
Lavigne packs the album, which is just under 40 minutes, with ferocious energy. She partnered with ska-heavyweight-turned-pop-punk-whisperer John Feldmann (5Sos,...

Fox’s Alter Ego has set its judges. Alanis Morissette, Grimes, Nick Lachey & will.iam are to join the judges table of the new Fox music format with Rocsi Diaz set as host.
The show, which will air after The Masked Singer on the fall schedule, is an avatar singing competition that will see singers become stars performing as their dream reinventions. It is exec produced by Matilda Zoltowski and is produced by Fox Alternative Entertainment.
It is a slightly unexpected lineup. While Lachey co-hosted Love Is Blind and was featured on Fox’s The Masked Singer, and will.i.am serves as a coach on the UK version of The Voice, Morissette and Grimes are making their network competition judging debuts.

Ethan Hawke revealed to IndieWire last year during the pandemic that a fourth “Before” movie was being discussed with director/writer Richard Linklater and actress/writer Julie Delpy. Now comes word from Delpy in an interview with Telerama (via The Playlist) that she turned down a fourth “Before” movie sometime within the last year and a half while contemplating retirement because she’s fed up with the film industry.

WWE’s Mike “The Miz” Mizanin found himself in the thick of the 2021 Royal Rumble last night. He then fairly quickly found himself over the top rope and onto the floor. Miz, who along with his tag-team partner John Morrison was eliminated by rising Nxt star Damian Priest, actually blames rapper Bad Bunny for the failure.
We’ll explain.
For those not caught up on the latest pro-wrestling pay-per-view, Miz (the character) tried (storyline) networking with WWE’s special guest Bad Bunny on Sunday ahead of the Men’s Royal Rumble Match. Bunny, who was at Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field to perform his song “Booker T” was not particularly interested in such a partnership.
The sheer disrespect set off the heel character played perfectly by Mizanin. Seething, The Miz smashed Bad Bunny’s entrance-ramp-adjacent DJ setup to pieces with his Money in the Bank briefcase. Bad Bunny, the good guy in this scenario,...

Mark Lazarus was installed as Chairman of NBCUniversal Television & Streaming last spring as part of a major reorganization of the Comcast-owned company.
Today, in a keynote interview as part of Natpe, he talked up what that reshuffle meant for the company’s programming strategy and fledgling streaming service Peacock and also opined on the Olympics that are set to take place in Japan this summer.
Lazarus, speaking to Today co-host Hoda Kotb, said bringing all of its networks, including NBC and cable nets such as Bravo and USA Network together under the same umbrella as Peacock, was an “aggressive” move but believed that it has helped its standing in the creative sector.
“That is a big benefit for us the creative community. You no longer have to look through individual networks,” he said. “Susan Rovner is now the leader of that creative group. Her job and goal is to...

Heather Olander, who built USA Network’s non-scripted division with series such as Chrisley Knows Best, is leaving NBCUniversal after 10 years.
Olander, who is EVP Alternative Development & Programming, USA, Syfy & Peacock, is exiting the company following a number of restructures. It follows the departure of her boss Bill McGoldrick, President of Original Content, NBCUniversal Entertainment Networks and Direct-to-Consumer, last month, and a reorg around NBCU’s unscripted divisions.
In November, Susan Rovner split non-scripted into two divisions – one, run by Rod Aissa, that would include unscripted lifestyle and documentary programming across the portfolio, and another, led by Jenny Groom, that would include reality competition, talent competition and game show formats.
Olander joined USA Network in 2011, added Syfy to her unscripted/alternative oversight in 2014, and added unscripted development for streamer Peacock in late 2019.

Heather Olander, executive vice president of alternative development and programming for NBCUniversal’s USA Network, Syfy and Peacock, is exiting the company after nine years. USA Network has ordered a fourth season of its thriller limited drama series The Sinner, with Bill Pullman set to reprise his role as Detective Harry Ambrose. Additionally, the network has picked up two new unscripted series, Instant Family (working title), starring Nicole Walters and Josh Walters, and The Rev (working title), headlined by Pastor Richard Hartley. Both are in the unscripted family sitcom genre, which the network has been focusing on following the success of Chrisley Knows Best.
The renewal and new series pickups are part of the current programming shift at USA away from ongoing scripted series toward more live and unscripted programming, along with “eventized” scripted projects, largely limited/anthology series.

WWE Superstar Carmella is the moon-walking, trash-talking princess of Staten Island, a character complete with the accent, colorful makeup, big hair, gaudy jewelry and all. But the real woman behind the wrestler, Leah Van Dale, is very much a Massachusetts girl.
Van Dale, the daughter of former WWF jobber (a perennial-loser gig that the business now refers to as “enhancement talent”) Paul Van Dale, hails from Spencer, Massachusetts, is a UMass Dartmouth alum, and a former New England Patriots cheerleader.
So how did someone very much from Boston Red Sox country come to represent a very different — yet equally distinctive — borough around New York Yankees land? Former Laker Girl Van Dale, who has the distinction of being WWE’s first Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match winner, walked TheWrap through that process.
