Judd Ehrlich’s “The Price of Freedom” is an absorbing, disturbing, and scrupulously well-researched documentary that lays out the nuts and bolts of the National Rifle Association’s history. In the process, You probably think I’m talking about the NRA’s relentless lobbying of Congress; its macho coziness with presidents like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump; its blackballing of political candidates who don’t have the right agenda; as well as the essential NRA ideology about what American gun law should consist of: no background checks, no training or permits, no restrictions on the buying and selling of assault weapons, no closing of the gun-show “loophole.”
The film covers all that stuff, and does it well. That said, we’ve heard most of it before, in the ongoing journalistic coverage of the gun debate (which is really a gun culture war), and in documentaries like “Making a Killing: Guns,...

"That couldn't be further from the truth." Tribeca Studios has debuted a trailer for the eye-opening doc film titled The Price of Freedom, premiering at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival this week. It will then open in select US theaters starting this July - and hopefully it will have an impact. The Price of Freedom exposes the hidden past of the American gun debate and reveals how the outsized political and cultural influence of the National Rifle Association (NRA) divided a nation and changed the course of American history, costing countless lives along the way. Featuring passionate pleas from President William J. Clinton, Representative Lucy McBath (D-ga) and Senator Chris Murphy (D-ct); NRA Board Member and former NRA President David Keene, and activists on all sides of the issue, The Price of Freedom presents a compelling case for those brave enough to take a stand against the NRA in defense of our communities and collective future.

Exclusive: Abramorama said Friday that it has acquired theatrical rights to The Price of Freedom, the Judd Ehrlich-directed feature documentary delving into the history of the NRA and its political and cultural influence on the gun debate in the U.S. The deal, which calls for a limited theatrical release July 7, comes on National Gun Violence Awareness Day and ahead of the pic’s world premiere in the Spotlight Documentary section at this month’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Produced in partnership with Tribeca Studios and Erhlich’s Flatbush Pictures, the doc includes interviews with Rep. Lucy McBath (D-ga) and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-ct), former Rep. Gabby Giffords, NRA board member and former NRA president David Keene and activists on all sides of the issue to spotlight how, through political and cultural influence, the National Rifle Association changed the course of history.

When director Shaka King was looking for an artist to deliver the end credit song for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” he went to Grammy winner H.E.R.
Of the qualities that made her the perfect artist to complete the task, he says, “versatility in musicianship, soul, artistic and personal integrity. She’s a throwback.”
King’s approach was to give the Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter notes about what he didn’t want. He says, “I really wanted to give her as much space creatively as possible – while expressing a desire to hear something contemporary with echoes of 1968. When I heard the Curtis Mayfield inspiration, I was like, ‘Yes!’”
The end result was “Fight for You,” which she wrote with D’Mile and Tiara Thomas. The song has flavors of Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone and Sly and the Family Stone, and is reminiscent of the revolutionary sounds of the 1960s.

There are no happy endings in Sean Ellis’ World War II drama “Anthropoid.” But should a new plan to honor the heroes portrayed within the new war drama pan out, the true story’s gruesome history might be forever altered in an unexpectedly positive way.
Ellis’ latest film follows the true story of Czechoslovakian resistance fighters Josef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), who undertook the nearly impossible mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich in Prague in 1942. The plan ultimately resulted in the deaths of Kubiš, Gabčík and five other Czechoslovakian fighters — and while Heydrich didn’t die immediately as planned, he did succumb to his injuries soon after, altering the course of the war forever — and while the soldiers have long been national heroes, over seven decades have passed without a proper burial for their bodies.

Dave Chappelle gave "his first in-depth interview in nearly a decade" to GQ this month, and in it he addresses his abrupt "Chappelle's Show" departure, TV binge-watching habits, impressive selfie collection and whatever the hell is going on with D'Angelo's answering machine, among other topics. Check out our full roundup below. 1. Despite all but turning his back on show business for almost ten years, he still clearly enjoys entertaining people. In addition to playing ten sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall over the summer, GQ interviewer Mark Anthony Green notes that the comedian is driven to put on a show even outside a performance context: "He's also toting around a small, very loud portable speaker that is connected to his phone. And once in a while he'll just press play for a few seconds. The sudden blaring of A Tribe Called Quest makes the guests at the Beverly Hills...

"The price of freedom is high."
Besides being box office bonanzas, one of the indicators that superhero movies are not simply a fad but a legitimate genre with staying power is the high caliber of the actors and actresses the movies are able to attract. Ranker did the math for us, tallying 117 (!) Oscar-nominated actors who played comic book characters, with the The Dark Knight Rises boasting the most winners with four, five if you count Anne Hathaway's subsequent win. The latest Oscar-winner to join a superhero movie is legendary actor Robert Redford, who takes a rare turn as a, shall we say, character with murky morals in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In anticipation of the movie's domestic release this Friday, Marvel has released a new featurette focusing on Redford's character, Alexander Pierce, head of the World Security Council. The video features some behind-the-scenes footage from the making of...

(Cbr) Whether it's new footage of Sebastian Stan kicking ass as the Winter Soldier, Nick Fury's (Samuel L. Jackson) S.H.I.E.L.D.-issue SUV getting blown sky-high or watching Anthony Mackie take flight -- literally -- as the Falcon, there's a lot to get excited about for Marvel's newest TV spot for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." While the full 60-second teaser has some recycled previously-seen footage, there's also plenty of new tidbits -- including a look at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, fresh footage of Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, and both Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) testifying before some kind of government committee. "The price of freedom is high," says Cap in the teaser. "And it's a price I'm willing to pay." Check out the full TV spot below. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" debuts April 4.

As if Gary and Joel’s innocent ways weren’t already under attack by bad influences, rival high schools and even lice (last week), Unsupervised is opening its doors to Emmy-nominated actor, Walton Goggins, (The Shield), who guest stars in this week’s episode, 107: The Magic of Science. It’s science fair time and the boys look to a psychic named Bruce Lindsay to help them out. The episode is written by John Carcieri and David Hornsby.
Goggins is no stranger to doing voice work having recorded for the 1996 PC classic video game, Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom and for The Shield video game, which was released in 2007. Goggins can be currently seen each week on Justified playing opposite Timothy Olyphant as the calculated and evil Boyd Crowder. Goggins will also be seen in several 2012 films including G.I. Joe: Retaliation as Warden Nigel James, Officer Down, Wells A.

In its third weekend in theaters, Get Low claimed the top gross among limited releases, interrupting The Girl Who Played with Fire's reign. Among new releases, Bollywood movie Peepli Live led the way, while Sundance winner Animal Kingdom had a tame launch. More than doubling its theater count to 53, Get Low was up 72 percent to $376,781, ranking 19th on the overall weekend chart. The Robert Duvall-Bill Murray comedy had a decent $7,109 per theater average and has thus far made $826,013. The Girl Who Played with Fire may have been knocked down a notch, but it still held well, off just 23 percent to $365,484 at 166 locations. Through its sixth weekend, the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has earned $5.2 million. Peepli Live finished in third place among limited releases, debuting to $350,054 at 64 locations. This was on the lower end for Bollywood movies this summer, trailing Kites, Raajneeti, Raavan and I Hate Luv Storys.

Exhuming the bodies of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner (top); Baptist preacher and convicted murderer Edgar Ray Killen (bottom) Neshoba: The Price Of Freedom Q&A with Filmmakers Micki Dickoff, Tony Pagano: Part I Would you say most people in Mississippi (and in Neshoba County) believe that justice has been served, or…? Is there a "color line" (or perhaps a "political line"?) dividing people in the way they see the outcome of the Killen trial? Dickoff: Many Neshoba Countyans, blacks and whites, are relieved and proud that some measure of justice was meted out in this case. However, some white citizens believe the trial of an 80-year-old man was a waste of time and money and another stain on Mississippi. Ben Chaney sums it up best: “It may take another 50 years before all these people die out” for real change to happen. Race...

Directed, produced, and edited by Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano, Neshoba: The Price of Freedom offers a unique peek into the mind of an unrepentant racist, Edgar Ray Killen. Killen, a Baptist preacher and the leader of a group of Klansmen accused of brutally murdering civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner in Neshoba County, Miss., in June 1964, is the only person ever convicted of the heinous crime known as the "Mississippi Burning" murders. "The tools used to tell the tale (particularly old newsreels, family photos and seldom-seen crime scene and autopsy photos) are masterfully employed," says Ernest Hardy in the L.A. Weekly. "Within the first 15 minutes, Dickoff and Pagano milk tear ducts (iconic newsreel footage of a young Ben Chaney weeping as he sings ‘We Shall Overcome’ at his brother’s funeral has lost none of its power to devastate), and then use that...

The 1964 murder of civil-rights activists Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney outside Philadelphia, Mississippi—the seat of Neshoba county—brought the deadly intractability of the segregated South home to many, particularly in the North. Nearly half a century later, Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano’s documentary Neshoba: The Price Of Freedom, brings it home again with determination, if not much invention. Goodman and Schwerner, both Jewish activists from New York, met up with Chaney, a young but experienced organizer in Mississippi’s African-American community, as part of the Freedom Summer, a concerted effort to register blacks who were ...

For this week's Doc Talk I'd like to spotlight two highly recommended films involving the South: Ross McElwee's personal ancestry exploration from 2003, Bright Leaves, and Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano's civil rights film Neshoba: The Price of Freedom, which finally gets a theatrical release this Friday (in NYC; next month it opens in La).
The reason I revisited McElwee's film is primarily because of the recent death of Oscar-winning screen legend Patricia Neal (Hud), who appears briefly in the doc. But it also ended up fitting in somewhat with Neshoba, because both films deal with a Southern history, both concern events that previously inspired fictionalized Hollywood movie plots (Bright Leaf for the former, Mississippi Burning the latter) and both follow modern stories relative to the historical material.
As for Neshoba, aside from the fact that it opens this weekend, I was intrigued about the film's subject matter...

Neshoba: The Price of Freedom will have its Us theatrical premiere in New York City on Aug. 13 at Cinema Village. Los Angeles will follow suit on Sept. 10. Directed by Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano, Neshoba: The Price of Freedom delves into both the legacy and the story behind the disappearance and murder of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, three civil rights workers who became victims of a mob of Klansmen in Neshoba County, Mississippi, at the beginning of the Freedom Summer in June 1964. Forty-one years later, the state convicted only one man in the killings, 80-year-old Baptist preacher Edgar Ray Killen. According to the Neshoba: The Price of Freedom press release, Dickoff and Pagano "gained unprecedented access to Killen, following him from shortly after his indictment through his trial. For the first time, the film captures the outspoken views of a Klan member charged with...

It took a while, but finally the complete and final 2010 Black Harvest Film Festival in Chicago has been announced. Over 40 movies in every category from feature film to shorts, documentaries, dramas (such as Bilal’s Stand pictured), comedies and everything else in between. All the films will be screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago located at 164 N. State St in the heart of downtown Chicago.
Opening night is Friday August 6th and the festival continues throughout the month until Thursday Sept. 2 with a special advance screening of Tanya Hamilton’s Night Captures Us with Ms. Hamilton present.
