Sex & Nudity

  • There are nude topless and full frontal female paintings on the walls of the saloon. For the most part, displayed from the side and the colors are faded, as paintings look old-looking.

Violence & Gore

  • The final shootout is actually quite violent. Blood is abundant throughout the scene.
  • There are several shoot-outs; men shot in the chest and head (blood and gunshot holes are shown).

Profanity

  • The phrase, "son of a bitch" is used twice. There is a crude reference to urination.
  • Whore and tit are each used once, and the f-word is muffled twice.
  • Many uses of 'Damn' and 'Hell'. 3 uses of 'Bastard' 3 uses of 'Ass' and 2 uses of 'Goddamn'

Violence & Gore

  • John Wayne's death at the end of the final shoot out is upsetting and hard to watch. His character is shot in the back by the Bartender with a shotgun, with some blood. The Bartender gets shot by Ron Howard's character at the end of the film. This is even more emotional for many people because this would be John Wayne's last film before his death in 1979.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • J.B. Books drinks Laudanum to ease pain from his cancer.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • John Wayne's character is suffering from terminal cancer, which maybe upsetting to many people.
  • The shootout at the end is intense.
  • The shootout in JB Books' Room is intense because it is at night and he cannot see his attackers.
  • The character Jay Cobb, is a jackass who is easily angered & nearly shoots JB Books on sight for stopping his horse in the road to glance at a newspaper.
  • J.B. Books is nearly robbed at the beginning of the film, but gut shoots his attacker with a Remington Derringer & gets his wallet back.
  • Mike Sweeney, a rotten man has it in for John Wayne's character and his attitude is one of hostility. He angrily shoves a shot glass off of the bar before the final showdown and doesn't say a word, but just grunts & mutters to himself.
