Books are being pulled from the library shelves of an Iowa school district following new legislation from Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, which purports to protect children from obscene material, The Gazette reports.
The new legislation, Senate File 496, prohibits “instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation in school districts, charter schools and innovation zone schools in kindergarten through grade six.” It requires that every book available to students be “age appropriate” and free of any “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act.”

“Gutsy,” which is now streaming on Apple TV+, plunged Hillary and Chelsea Clinton deeper into their goal of telling the stories of gutsy women that they began with their 2019 “The Book Of Gutsy Women.” With many of their previous subjects having passed away, they turned their attention to other female trailblazers from celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Amy Schumer to advocates fighting child marriage, promoting indigenous representation and fostering supportive communities for LGBTQ+ people.
Hillary and Chelsea Clinton stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival to speak with TheWrap’s Editor in Chief Sharon Waxman about their experience behind the camera as producers as well as the current state of womanhood in the U.S. and beyond.
As the pair reflected on what it meant to fight back against misogynistic forces in schools, religious institutions and social media, Chelsea noted, “We...

It’s hard to think of Maya Angelou as anything other than the symbol of strength she portrayed in her award-winning autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. But before it’s publication in 1969, the late poet was a single mother struggling to find work to support her son.
In an exclusive clip from American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, the first documentary feature about her life, Angelou’s son Guy Johnson gets emotional remembering one particular hardship she experienced at the arms of Emmy-winning actress Pearl Bailey.

Chicago – There are show business stories, and then there are show business miracles. In the tech age we’re living through, the needle-in-a-haystack hope that a song, video or rant will go “viral” online is part of the experience. Singer Samantha Montgomery was one such singer, and her story is in “Presenting Princess Shaw.”
The new documentary, directed by Ido Haar, tells a story of two disparate people. On one side of the world is Samantha “Princess Shaw” Montgomery, a working class warrior in New Orleans, who fills her lonely hours by creating original “a capella” songs on her YouTube channel. On the other side is Kutiman (Ophir Kutiel), an Israeli musician whose specialty is gathering other music artists on YouTube and collaborating with them (online) to create original works. When Kutiman stumbled across Princess Shaw (Montgomery’s stage name), suddenly a new star was about to be born. The...

Her unmistakably raspy tones narrate this story of her trajectory from a brutal childhood in the south to a leading figure of black American self-empowerment
In the opening moments of Maya Angelou And Still I Rise, Hillary Clinton says it would be sad if the poet, thinker, and performer were only to be remembered for one thing, alluding to her classic work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. But this documentary – put together by Bob Hercules and first-time film-maker Rita Coburn Whack, shows the varied, creative and often brutal back story that created one of America’s finest writers.
Starting with her upbringing in Stamps, Arkansas, the directors use Angelou’s unmistakably raspy narration to weave a story of abuse and neglect. Her mother leaves home, and a seven-year-old Angelou is raped by her mother’s new boyfriend when they are reunited in St Louis. After she tells people about the rape,...
