Amusement and entertainment in a new adventure with our friends , this time well set in Africa
ma-cortes20 January 2012
Two likable adventurers played by Hill and Spencer against the nasty Joe Bugner , an ex-boxer and big game hunter who dedicates himself to illegal smuggling . Entertaining and amusing African adventure with several comic touches . This time Terence Hill and Bud Spencer as brave adventurers in Africa taking on lots of dangers and feats against a group of hoodlums . Thin and blonde man named Slim (Terence Hill) and stocky , bearded fatty named Tom ( Bud Spencer ) team up again as the valiant duo . The agreeable crew makes a new adventure movie with plenty of fist-play , action and entertainment , though only for Hill and Spencer fans . This amusing film deal with our intimate friends in Africa , they're nowadays two tourist swindlers , the blue-eyes and sympathetic Terence Hill and the grumpy and goofy Bud Spencer . There happens numerous adventures and silly struggles against nasties led by Ormond (Joe Bugner) a wildlife smuggler who takes animals to carry them to abroad menageries.

This amusing , engaging movie is crammed of fist-fights , punches , slaps , kick-ass , moving stunt-work , colorful African outdoors and lots of humor . The picture is realized in similar style to ¨Africa Express¨ and ¨Safari Express¨ by Duccio Tessari with Giuliano Gemma . Terence Hill is top-notch as attractive freewheeling trader of goods with a dream , to save enough money and Bud Spencer is enjoyable in charge of a curious tourism agency ; meanwhile , both of whom taking on a group of smugglers . The lighting-paced storyline slows down at times , but frenetic fight-sequences and a lot of fun make up for it , besides includes a chimp getting into mischief , pranks , frolics and antics . It's an entertaining romp with full of brawls , including amusing leaps and jumps . This is a nice and funny juvenile story for Hill and Spencer enthusiasts , as they are delightful and likable . It packs action, fist-play, slapdash, humor with tongue-in-cheek and is quite bemusing . This release has some cool sketches and several hilarious moments , adding wonderful African landscapes . The film isn't always good , sometimes is fresh and diverting and on a couple of memorable occasions , it's frankly delicious. The movie displays innumerable laughters , jokes and slapstick . Catching and commercial musical score with marvelous leitmotif by Rizzati in Guido and Maurizio De Angelis style , including some beautiful songs , the first of them sung by Bud Spencer . The motion picture picture was compellingly directed by Italo Zingarelli who produced the Hill-Spencer's greatest hits as ¨They call me Trinity¨ , ¨Trinity is still my name¨ and other Spaghettis as ¨The five man army¨, ¨Johnny Yuma¨ and Peplum as ¨¨The seven Spartans¨, ¨The invincible gladiator ¨, ¨The secret seven¨ , ¨Ursus¨, and several others . This is a passable entertaining juvenile that will appeal to Italian comedy buffs. Rating : 6/10. Acceptable and passable but only for Hill and Spencer fans.

Average Hill & Spencer comedy - with lions!
jan-vonk20 June 2010
For the most part I'm for the Hippopotamus is a standard Hill & Spencer offering, consisting of mild comedy mixed with some fist fights. Like usual the plot isn't much to talk about, and mainly exists as to supply some bad guys for them to brawl with. In this case Jack Ormond and his gang of poachers, who are catching African wildlife which they want to sell to a Canadian zoo! Tom and Slim have to team up to prevent this whichever way they can, misbehaving themselves at lunch, putting up a casino scam and off course talking with their fists...

So far nothing we haven't seen from them before, and the quality too is as usual. Although dated, it has the just OK production values we're used to in a Hill & Spencer movie. Nevertheless it's among my favorites of their work, and that has to be because of the nice scenery together with all the wild animals. We get to see quite a few lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, ostriches and wildebeests. Not only nice to look at but they do interact with them in a respectful if not loving way which is quite an accomplishment while sending out a powerful message.

Well worth a watch for that alone.

Give Joe Bugner an Oscar
Penfold-312 December 1998
This is fairly standard Hill/Spencer stuff, except for the fact that Joe Bugner (the former British, Commonwealth, European and Australian Heavyweight champion) plays the part of the villain. The film is worth watching simply for Joe's fantastic acting and South African accent. As expected in Hill/Spencer films, Joe gets beaten up in the end with the usual variety of kitchen utensils and everything ends up happily ever after.

An African setting for the comedy duo
Leofwine_draca7 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'M FOR THE HIPPOPOTAMUS takes the usual Terence Hill/Bud Spencer western template and transports it to Africa for some exotic fun. The resulting concoction isn't one of the all-time best from the Italian comic duo, but it's still a thoroughly entertaining movie that focuses on big laughs and big spectacle to good effect.

Hill and Spencer play the usual ne'er-do-wells who come up against some German villains, including a boxing champion. The characters are involved in a secret plot to smuggle some of Africa's wildlife to a zoo abroad, and our heroes must team up to stop them. Gentle laughs and funny action scenes abound; the action is never better than when Spencer steps into the fray to bash a few heads together or hammer his opponents into the ground.

Terrific Terence Hill and Bud Spencer film!
Mark-37115 April 2000
"I'm for the Hippopotamus" is a good movie! It maybe hard for non Terence and Bud fans to like it, but its damn funny! Its about Slim and Tom having to stop a german tyrant called Jack Ormond from sending half the african wildlife to the Toronto Zoo in Ontario, Canada. It doesnt sound like much of a plot but there are some priceless scenes here, like the fights, the pawn shop "robbery", escaping from jail with a bulldozer, Silm drinks caviar mixed with butter, salt, pepper, and champagne. The whole casino bit! That was good! Joe Bugner's performance as Ormond was better than expected! IT'S A MUST FOR TERENCE AND BUD FANS LIKE MYSELF! My vote, 9/10. >

Below-par Hill & Spencer entry.
gridoon18 March 2004
The Hill & Spencer movies were never famous for their brilliant stories, but this one doesn't even make an effort. Plotless, slow-paced, boring and only occasionally amusing, it feels like a film that was made out of obligation, rather than like something that the stars and the filmmakers put their hearts in. At least with its animal-friendly messages you could say it's good for kids, but no - they'll be as bored with it as anyone else. (**)

A very fun movie! Hill/Spencer fans will be very pleased
AriSquad16 March 2004
GRAU GRAU GRAU!! Love this movie! Only in a Spencer/Hill movie can you see a man eat a lobster whole, comic fight scenes, & a bulldozer jailbreak. This has to be one of the best non-western films the pair has done. They are out to save wildlife from the greed of poachers, The former heavy-weight champ bad guy is terrific. Spencer does a bunch of his fist hammers on the top of the bad guys heads (NEVER gets old to see that!)Hill avoids punches, moves out of the way so they end up punching a fellow bad guy (Also.. NEVER gets old!). Lots of fun in this film, Great comdey that was often duplicated by other filmakers but never done as good as these guys can do it. Track down a copy of this and sit back & enjoy it.

Disappointing
rhustox20 June 2009
Another reviewer (robertofuiano) is critical of the critics of this film. In an obviously poor English translation of his native Italian, Mr. Fuiano states that reviewers should judge this film on its own merits and not in comparison to other Terence Hill/Bud Spencer films. That is not easy to do, since fans naturally hope for or expect the same quality film as "They Call Me Trinity," for example.

"I'm for the Hippopotamus" features pretty much the same Hill-Spencer relationship and the same formula of periodic fistfight scenes played for comedy. In these aspects, it is far inferior to "Trinity," and is surely a disappointment.

However, even apart from comparison to "Trinity," "Hippopotamus" suffers from a terrible, stupid script, poor character development and bad direction. It is a cheesy, sophomoric film. Maybe it would be entertaining after a few beers, but not for anyone who is seeking a worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours.

Now back to the comparisons: I am slowly wading my way through the entire Terence Hill/Bud Spencer collection, and I have many more films to go through. Thus far, I have found only "They Call Me Trinity," "My Name is Nobody," and the "Don Matteo" TV series to be worth a repeat viewing. "Blackie the Pirate," surprisingly, might make that short list, too; a little lower on the list (maybe worthy of watching on a totally boring evening) would be "Trinity is Still My Name," "Lucky Luke," and "The Troublemakers." After seeing real dogs like "Boot Hill," "Who Finds a Friend Finds a Treasure," and this film, I am becoming concerned that it's pretty much downhill from here.

As for Mr. Fuiano, I think it is fair to say that standards of comedy are different from country to country. British humor is different from American humor, and I'm sure Italians are entertained by things that Americans might find droll. So I do respect that another perspective from another culture might disagree with my very American point of view.

Bugner's greatest performance
kingmonkey12 May 2013
Whilst it is difficult to ascertain which is the greatest Spencer / Hill film - it could arguably be this or He Who Finds A Friend Finds A Treasure - by some distance this is the greatest cinematic performance to date from the legendary Joe Bugner.

Whilst still a heavyweight boxer, and lest we forget a contender for the world title, Bugner somehow managed to find the time to perform in films such as this. Does he make the the transition with success? Oh yes, certainly. It turns out that Bugner is an exceptional actor; what a shame his talents have not been used in too many other films.

Fans of Spencer and Hill will no doubt have seen this film already, but for anyone out there looking for more Joe Bugner than they have already seen then this is the film for you.

Good for children
robertofuiano6 October 2008
beautiful film. As to the usual one, the usual negative comments which talk about a classical film some years 80 which everyone does not like it to the nostalgic ones are met.Sure Heros that this film had to have a judgment in this site. In fact reviewers' good part has put a high vote to the previous episodes. Because this contrast? I know the reason. Since assumptive reviewers' good part favorably sees the past and as the past is "better" than the present they have given several credit to the preceding episodes being still the last episode more explosive and spectacular. At this point should reject also the old episodes but there are here two weights and two measure. In fact also cinema masterpieces have been criticized and denigrated. Good part some reviewers of this site belong to the very bad reviewers. Better think separately with its head.

Be nice to lions, hippos and all the others too!
Horst_In_Translation27 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"Io sto con gli ippopotami" or "I'm for the Hippopotamus" or "Das Krokodil und sein Nilpferd" is a co-production between Italy and South Africa from 1979, so this one had its 40th anniversary last year. Yep, it's still 2020. The South African impact here probably mostly comes from where this film is set. The language is Italian all along. Maybe some of the actors are also Soth African, which could explain why so many cast members here, also some who really had a lot of screen time, have never been in any films before or after this movie we got here. The central language here is Italian though, even if there is also English included apparently. I do not really know where because I watched the German dub and in here the language was German from beginning to end. Actually, by now with all I have seen, I'd probably have a hard time to get used to Spencer's original voice or an English dub. But it's okay as I don't have to. At minimally over 90 minutes, it is definitely one of his shorter, probably even shortest movies. But at the same time, it is also one of my very favorites. I have seen this film many times already and even if I maybe did not like it as much today as I did on other occasions, there is still no way I will ever think about giving this one anything other than a genuinely positive recommendation. I will mention a few nice moments and scenes later on. As for the basics, the director here is Italo Zingarelli and he is also one of the four writers. Really a lot for this rather short films. But I think that Italian films in general often have more writers than films from most other countries. This includes Germany as well. By the way, look at the German title. It's the only one from those I mentioned that includes Hill's character as well. The reason is that the dub changed it a bit even for us here. The characters are nicknamed hippo and crocodile and that's how they keep calling each other. The international title and Italian title only make a reference to standing (up) for hippos. Which is still cool as I like these animals a lot. I know they can be pretty dangerous and certainly I would not run into one in the wild, but one of my favorite stuffed animals as a child, maybe even my number one, was a hippo. Still is obviously. And let's be honest: The picture here on imdb really has Spencer look like a hippo standing in the water there. At least more than Hill looks like a crocodile. But this fits too. Spencer is big and strong. Hill is fast and strong. As for Zingarelli again, he still lived for quite some time after this film, but it is a bit surprising to see him as a director here because he produced a lot, but really directing films was a big exception. This was also already from pretty late in his career. But it's no exception that Spencer movies are directed by people who often mostly work in other fields of production. As for the basics still, take a look at the cast here. I already said that many cast members are pretty unknown and we don't know what they did before and after this film, but it seems they were no professional actors, at least no professional movie actors, but I assume back in 1979 there weren't that many films produced in South Africa that they had a chance to make a living this way. They probably had other jobs. For example, even the key henchman is played by sombody who wasn't in anything else. Johan Naude is the name. All we know is he died in 2010. Or Les Marcowitz, the small foul-mouthed antagonist. He also appeared in one other movie. That is all we know. But Joe Bugner I have to mention. He is the main villain here. He boxed, Ali several times, Frazier once as well, so a really world-famous athlete. I guess this explains why is at least somewhat capable of standing up to Spencer in their comedic fight before he falls into the water at the end. Interesting addition for sure, especially because he is not South African or anything.

Alright, this film delivered on many occasions. I will mention some now. The end is of course so nice when all these animals get to be free. There are so many animals in here honestly, I can't even mention them all. Ostrichs for example too I did not remember. But it is fitting with the title that fauna is crucial in here. I love animals! One aspect I also genuinely enjoyed was the music. Spencer's "Grau Grau Grau" with the kids is so much fun and also a really uplifting number and the Shosholoza version you can hear in the final half hour several times is so nice that I even got it on my MP3 player. Added it a long time ago after seeing this film. That's how much I like it. As for an individually great scene or moment, my number one is probably really short and small. Like when we have a bad guy throw a knife right next to Hill's character's hand during that casino sequence. And Spencer says something like "hey careful, that's not a cheese sandwich". I have no idea why, but I found this so incredibly funny. It's the typical comedy of how they comment lightly on something actually pretty dangerous. Love it. By the way, they get attacked with knives here a lot. Normally, blades are not too common in Spencer and Hill movies. One character, it may have been the bald henchman, also attacks Spencer with a knife earlier and it ends up in the bad guy's foot. Oh well. I think all the henchmen here were somewhat fun because you could easily remember them from their looks (and behavior), even if they did not have a lot of material. I already mentioned the aggro dwarf. Also this film here seems really progressive in terms of tolerance. They were definitely trying all they could to not cause any race trouble. The two (who are cousins here by the way) have this elderly woman in their lives who is Black, not their real mother, but a bit of a mother figure if you can say so because she also is not feature too prominently in here. And the two heroes beat up the White cops, but then step out and they have all these guns pointed at them from the Black folks with their rifles. And the mess at the courtroom also happens to White folks. They even mentioned the prosecutor is one of the villain's guys. By the way, we see early on how the villain acts really disrespectfully towards an old partner, his coach or something, and there we know already we are supposed to dislike him. We shall remember because then the character was gone for a long time again, it was just his introduction basically before he got featured more frequently in the second half. Anyway, what I mean is there is a lot of tolerance towards Blacks and animals in this film. The scene with the gun was funny too like when Spencer's character says the bullets are all fake and then shoots and destroys a tire because with his own gun he forgot to replace the actual bullets. And his tourist group heard it and they were not happy at all. Not because they were the only ones that got shot at with real bullets (instead of the animals), but because this way it is just a pseudo hunt. But yeah, they made sure Spencer's character is also likable and would not fire at animals. The result of this scene is the mad little Asian guy there. I could really mention a lot more that I liked hered. I'll just keep going with some brainstorming. Spencer's laugh (the dub, not sure about the real one) is so hilarious the way we hear it at the casino when Hill's character wins big, but also how he reacts when the latter loses all the money to somebody who deserves it was nice to watch. The disappointment although he knows the money is where it should be. Spencer was not a bad actor, even if he kept playing the same character over and over again. I think he was not just likable. He also had a lot of talent. Or the cheetahs in here are nice (especially the one at the end) or other wildcats where Hill really steps into their compound. Or how the main antagonist ends up in a compound himself to hide away from the wild animals. The scene where the good guys are eating together with the bad guys was fun too somehow. I just love thie dialogues in these films always. Also Bugner (who turned 70 this year) was really good at making an angry face expression. I would be scared if I had to face him in a ring. I am mostly referring to how he looked and what he said near the very end when he approached Spencer's character for the final fight. Oh and we get some arm wrestling in here as well, nothing unusual for Spencer films, but that you see Hill's character doing it was a bit of an exception. Spencer doing it was expected. Also kinda funny how the bad guy talked and reacted there haha. Still, realistically difficult to believe that Hill's character not only stood a chance, but that he won easily. Okay, this is it then I would say. I think i wrote more than I expected and there is probably nonetheless a lot I forgot about and maybe wanted to mention. But this also shows that I really, really like this film, even if it was not my best viewing for this one here compared to others in the past. In any case, you totally must check this one out. I think the rating is clearly too low here on imdb. Such an entertaining movie. I will definitely watch it again in the future. Most likely several times. So should you as this is one of the very best from its year, not just from Italy, not just from Europe either, but worldwide. So much fun. It already starts with the sacred picture that amounts in the first fight. Or how the bad guys keep reacting after running into our heroes again and again. They are sick of getting beaten up over and over again and in the end just jump into the water on their own. Okay, that is really all though. Sorry, my review is not structured very well tonight, but I hope you ran read between the lines how enthusiastic I am about the outcome here. Highly recommended. And get well soon with the reflux or pyrosis or whatever it is called Tom (yeah Buddy plays a character that has my name haha awesome) as I know how annoying it can be.

Plenty of laughs
richardjp-172252 April 2018
Plenty of laughs and fight scenes in this one and this is the only one of their movies where Spencer comes across a guy who is nearly as tough as he is.

Hard to deal with seeing wild animals locked up in cages, but I suppose that it's good that Spencer and Hill were on a mission to set them all free. Some of the scenes really did look like animals were being set free for real.

BTW, hippopotami only feature in the first scene. A laughing mechanical one in particular.

More than the eye can meet
martideconejeros11 October 2021
As with almost all if the BS & TH movies, the plot tells a simple story but it has larger moral and ethical implications. BS & TH always fight for the little guy. They always fight the powerful, abusive, rich and corrupt, when it is not just a plain villain. They always use the necessary violence (and no more) to obtain justice. They do not start the fighting, moreover they seem to avoid it if possible. They always prevail and once doing so, never mantain the power obtained or abuse it. And with this movie, there is a anti-racist, anti-colonial overtone and specifically, they aim for enviroment and animal conservation. Plus its very funny and entertaining.
