In 1920's England Arnie Cole runs a little fleapit cinema showing films for the picture going masses. Realizing that there is money to be made out of movies and convinced the medium will be big, he decides to make his own films with his small band of helpers. But things make an inauspicious start when his part time squeeze Letty is arrested, while there is a small matter of money that he desperately needs to get started. As it is, he receives an intriguing offer from Lady Maud, who has her own reasons for seeking a partnership with him that soon becomes apparent.

Arnie and Maud find themselves man and wife, but the wedding day gets off to a bad start when both Arnie and Llewellyn end up drunk at the reception. Maud decides to go home and await his arrival, but she discovers it could be a long day ahead of her as Arnie decides to track down stars and a director to make his first picture. Among them is Corky Brown, an alcoholic comedian always suspicious of his young wife Cora's friendships with her leading men, and his agent Max Legendre, an ambitious but pretentious director who proves a shrewd operator in contract negotiations. Then there are the Brewer family, who rely on their child star daughter Dotty for their career. But Dotty is no longer a child, while her older sister Clara has secret ambitions of her own.
