In the pantheon of the best action films ever, many of the same worthwhile titles come up: Die Hard, Speed, Aliens…And of course there’s Predator, The Killer, Runaway Train – well, not according to Variety, at least, who made some glaring omissions and curious inclusions on their list of “The 50 Best Action Movies of All Time”.
This ranking of the best action movies has, expectedly, come under scrutiny, with many readers wondering, Where’s this movie? and Where’s that movie? Of course, even with the prestige of Variety, this list of “The 50 Best Action Movies of All Time” is still just opinion. Still, we can’t help but notice a few things here…

This was Chang Cheh’s first film not featuring the “Venom Mob,” but he substituted them with gusto, by presenting ninjas, the animosity between China and Japan, and Cheng Tien Chi.
Chief Hong, leader of a martial arts school, once more challenges his archrival, Yuan Zeng, to a tournament between the two schools, for the title of martial arts master. Hong’s school has been losing for quite some time, and this time is not an exception. However, when all his students are defeated, he calls in a samurai from Japan to fight for his school. The samurai wins against his opponent and forces him to commit suicide, only to face the same fate in his next duel. Before he dies though, he asks Chief Hong to contact an allied ninja clan. Furthermore, as he warns Yaun Zeng that his and his students’ end is near, he manages to poison him.

Filmmaker and hip-hop legend RZA made dreams come true for kung-fu fans on a recent Saturday night by programming a double feature of classic martial arts films “Five Element Ninjas” and “House of Traps” at New York’s Metrograph theater.
The original member of the Wu-Tang Clan made three appearances at the event and introduced the 1982 kung-fu titles, both of which were directed by prolific martial arts film director Cheh Chang and produced by Hong Kong’s legendary production company Shaw Brothers. “Five Element Ninjas” follows a young martial artist seeking revenge against the ninja who killed his teacher and brethren, while “House of Traps” centers on a team of skilled fighters making their way through a house rigged with deadly traps.
Both sold out screenings were packed with kung-fu cinema devotees, many of whom felt compelled to express their love for the genre during a Q&A with RZA,...

What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.
I want to name a few of my favorite end fight scenes and please feel free to comment below, your favorite fight scenes and maybe they will be added to the future features.
1.Flash Point (2007)
Cast:Donnie Yen, Collin Chou, Louis Koo, Xing Yu, Kent Cheng
Fight Choreographer:Donnie Yen
2.Pantyhose Hero (1990)
Cast:Sammo Hung, Alan Tam, Billy Ching, Philip Chan, Ridley Tsui
Fight Choreographer:Sammo Hung, Siu Tak Foo, Brandy Yuen
3.The Thundering Mantis (1979)

I love Martial Arts films, or better yet, Asian action cinema in general; Kung Fu, Ninjas, Samurai, Thai Boxing, Gun Fu, and my latest love: Silat. As escapist fun goes, nothing makes me happier than a good chop socky, hell, even a bad chop socky is not without its charm. A laughable plot, weird and esoteric fighting styles, and of course, terrible dubbing can be just as much fun as watching Shaolin Monks practice ancient techniques, that, if you were quick enough, and maybe had a knack, you could even learn a real move or two. “Old School” kung fu flicks always spoke to me because of the sense of respect and honor portrayed in the character of the hero, but more importantly, the idea that an individual could develop his body and mind and achieve feats of greatness.

Chang Chen is one of the best directors in Kung Fu cinema, known as the main man behind many Shaw Brothers classics, Chang Chen always brings blood and guts as well as having a great story line and great characters in his movies.
Some of my favorite movies of he’s are, Vengeance, Boxer From Shantung, Five Venom’s, Shaolin Martial Arts plus many more. He always brought great depth within most of his characters unless he just went all out and wanted a very bloody movie filled with fights. John Woo was also a big fan of Chang’s and also learnt a lot from him working on certain movies. He gave us raw power in terms of the leading males in his movies and with Lau Kar Leung choreographing many of the fight scenes, you know your in for a real treat.

The Exhumed Films 24-Hour Horrorthon has taken place for the past five years over Halloween weekend. It’s an entire day of horror movie mayhem, which breaks down to roughly 14 movies and seven blocks of trailers.
If you live in Philly, or really any place other than Los Angeles, you know that 24 hours of horror movies, projected on 16mm or 35mm film, is a rare and beautiful thing. On the morning of the thon fans stocked with provisions (mostly of the cheesy variety), sleeping bags—tents were outlawed a few years back—and dressed in various forms of comfy pant attire and obscure horror t-shirts, line up hours before doors open in hope of getting good seats.
While they are waiting in line, attendees are presented with a program that hints at the movies to be shown; Exhumed never tells what they are showing before the event. The clues, quite frankly,...

If you’re at all a fan of older kung fu films, then the Shaw Brothers should pretty much be legends to you. The Shaw Brothers got started way back in 1924, setting up their own cinema. Led by Run Run and Runme Shaw, they amassed a large number of cinemas before venturing into producing their own films in the 1960s. They went on to make hundreds of films, specializing in martial arts films and quickly becoming the leaders in that genre. While Five Element Ninjas is certainly a less well known Shaw Brother’s title, their style and kung fu action are on full display. After a difficult competition with a group of thugs, the Martial Artist Alliance returns to their headquarters to discover that their Master was poisoned during the proceedings. To make matters worse, they are issued a challenge by the mysterious Five Elements Formation, a group of ninjas trained in a Japanese martial art...
