rough child-hood for Aussie young 'un.

This one is from Australia, and centers on an eight year old boy called P.S. (Nicholas Gledhill...this was his first role.) There's a tug of war for custody of P.S., between Aunt Lily and Vanessa. Right at the beginning, Lily tries to explain to the boy why he must go off with Vanessa, but he's only eight, after all. Quite a variation from the Auntie Mame story; here, its all serious education and proper behavior, pretty much the opposite of Mame. So much PINK! have you ever seen so much pink in one room? Large, imposing rooms. And not allowed to get out and play with others. Vanessa kept him all to herself. Not much fun for a youngster who had so much fun in Sydney. Here, he can't seem to do anything right. Vanessa thinks she is doing the right thing for him, but doesn't really know that a youngster wants to just play. Then, stuff happens... which might help turn things around for him.

Story by Sumner Elliott. The novel was written when he was about 46... film done when he was about 66; wonder if its his own story. Elliott was born down Undah, and died in NYC. Directed by Carl Schultz, who did mostly television projects. Finally it's out on DVD. Good story.

A good performance

Nicholas Gledhill's portrayal of a child is one of the best I've ever seen. He was eight at the time, and the character seems more like five---and a really excellent capture of the body language and expression of a child of that age mystified by the odd grown-up world around him. The worst distraction in the film was the music, which never seemed appropriate, like it had been composed for a different film, in an earlier decade. A few acting performances were overbaked, but in general it was OK. Oddly, Nicholas never appeared in another film.

One of the best films to deal with the subject of childhood.

One of the greatest and least sentimental films about childhood and one of the best, yet most undervalued, of Australian pictures, Carl Schultz's "Careful, He Might Hear You", taken from Sumner Locke Elliott's best-selling book, is about a young boy, known simply as PS, (terrifically played by 8 year old Nicholas Gledhill), caught in the middle of an acrimonious custody battle between his two aunts after his mother's death and his abandonment by his father. It's a very simple, straightforward film with excellent performances from Wendy Hughes and Robyn Nevin as the two women in question, John Hargreaves as the returning father and Peter Whitford as his uncle.

Schultz films it so that we see everything through PS's eyes and it's often very moving though Ray Cook's over-emphatic score sometimes drags it down while the period setting is beautifully captured in John Stoddart's designs and John Seales' superb widescreen cinematography. A sizeable international hit in its day it was named one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review.

An Australian masterpiece

"Careful He Might Hear You" showcases the full talent and wonderful potential of the Australian film industry and must rank as one of the best Australian movies ever made. The depth of excellence, talent and acting in this movie is second to none and absolutely superb The plot and background to this movie is intriguing and the script and the way that the plot unfolds keeps the viewer engaged and intrigued until the end. Everything is done to a standard of superb excellence down to the scenery and the portrayal of the two very different lifestyles depicted in this movie. The musical score is absolutely beautiful. Everything about the background and setting of this movie works out perfectly.

But this all pales in comparison to the acting. I have perhaps never seen a movie so perfectly cast where each of the actors and actresses involved -even the supporting cast -gives a wonderful and creative depth and dimension to their portrayal of the characters. Nicholas Gledhill is an excellent child actor and a maturity in conveying emotions beyond his years. Robyn Niven is perfect in her role as PS's aunt and guardian Lila and Peter Whitford is also wonderfully believable in his role as her loving, affable husband. John Hargreaves gives a breathtaking performance (if only briefly) in his heartbreaking role as PS's father, who obviously deeply loves his son but is incapable of caring for him.

But a special mention must go to Wendy Hughes for her portrayal of Vanessa. This character has many complexities to her personality and Wendy Hughes portrays all of the different aspects to her personality flawlessly and with a depth of reality and emotion that really brings the character to life. She is strikingly, breathtakingly beautiful and she is more than perfect for this role. In fact I would perhaps rank this as the best character portrayal I have seen in Australian cinematic history and one of the best character portrayals I have ever seen in any movie.

This movie is seriously underrated and I can't recommend it enough. 10/10 and I'd rate it higher if I could

It captures the story but misses the nuances

Careful, He Might Hear You - the novel by Sumner Locke Elliott (a thinly disguised autobiographical piece) - is a meandering, but still engaging, narrative of a six-year-old Australian boy, orphaned at birth with the death of his mother and an forever absentee father. The movie - beautifully rendered and magnificently acted - is an intelligently adapted work, condensed for enactment, to be sure, but still faithful to the evolution of the events. However, the subtleties of the character interactions - so vital to the novel - were largely glossed over in the film, and that is its shortcoming. True, produced in 1983 in Australia, it is the product of film-making 40 years ago when the emphasis was more on story and less on character. The film does its best to bridge that gap - what success there is in defining the relationships is excellently attempted by the actors - they did all they could with the script they were given - but in the end we see very little of the emotions which drew them together and yet tore them apart. It is these emotions which are the guts of the story.

The boy - "PS" as he has been dubbed by his dying mother, who saw him as a beloved post script to the end of her determinedly daring life - is set in 1930s Australia. PS lives with Lila and George, his mother's older sister and her husband, who see him as their own. Their circumstances are modest in the those Depression years, but they are managing. Back into their lives comes Vanessa, yet another aunt/sister (there are still even two more), who has been living in England as a companion to Ettie, their family's wealthy cousin. It seems that PS' missing father has been persuaded to assign "Ness" with a role in PS' guardianship. A tug of war ensues between Lila and Vanessa for PS' allegiance, and it is his eventual destiny that is the story's denouement.

The acting is superb. Wendy Hughes and Robin Nevin as Vanessa and Lila, are restrained where they could have cut loose. John Hargreaves, as PS' still mostly absent father, was nobly worthless, which explained so much. Nicholas Gledhill, in his first role, is brilliant - he carries the film. The technical contributions - direction, cinematography, sets, lighting, sound, costumes, make-up - are all first rate.

If one has not read the book, I am sure the movie - in the 1980s - would be satisfying. But this story deserves so much more. Today, it would probably be done as miniseries - freeing the writer to bring out the characters, their relationships and their emotions, all of which are vital to understanding PS' journey to find himself.

Great adaptation

The film is a superb adaptation of the book. As is true of most adaptations, it doesn't quite live up to the book. Read the book first--and then see the movie. The acting is first-rate. The little boy, Nicholas Gledhill, is amazing. And Wendy Hughes is stunning--what a shame she has never caught on with American audiences in her relatively unproductive American film and television career. The film is another example of the high quality work that comes out of Australia with such frequency.

Magical coming-of-age saga

Surely one of the best modern films about childhood, this swept the Australian Academy Awards and remains a thrilling film experience. When a young boy is left orphaned, his two aunts wage a bitter custody war over him. We see the adults' actions from the boy's point of view, with all the wonder, confusion, and naive wisdom such an outlook would provide. The events have a wry edge even in tragedy and remain gripping even in happiness. Stay tuned through the final credits for one of the best epilogues in film history.

Wendy Hughes plays the dark side of Auntie Mame, and she is both entrancing and repulsive, ludicrous and heartbreaking. The late John Hargreaves delivers a shattering cameo, and young Nicholas Gledhill deserves to be named in the company of Jean-Pierre Leaud, Anton Glanzelius, and Haley Joel Osment. The child's-eye direction is never less than astonishing, while the cinematography and music are gorgeous enough to take your breath away. If you thought the squabble over Elian Gonzalez was great drama, wait till you see this!

What a Bore

Sorry but I cannot tolerate films about stupid people and all of the characters in this film are just that. The little boy is good enough but I suspect this was a much more interesting book. Were I this kid, I really can't say I'd want to be related to any of them.

The absentee father, Logan, promises to fix things for the kid and then disappears. The rich aunt is conveniently killed in a tacky ferry boat accident. The one time the aunt whom he wanted to live with had her chance, she clams up in an asthmatic attack in court. And her husband, the kid's beloved uncle has a nervous breakdown when the kid colors in his "beloved book". Here in the States we have Lifetime Television Movies - for women. That sums this thing up for me. I guess women might like it. I sure didn't.

International level Australiana

One of Australia's great films of the 80s...big, lavish and crafted for an international audience.......along with GALLIPOLI, THE LIGHTHORSEMEN and MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, "Careful"..is different in that it is set in Sydney harbourside suburbs of the 1920s......most period films made at this time are set earlier and are rural.....also like the sublime masterpiece THE IRISHMAN. The cast for "Careful" is theater professionals who fit the passionate personalities the extremely emotional and personal roles demand. Their transformation to film is also thanks to the great director Carl Schultz who also made the superb Australian films GOODBYE PARADISE and TRAVELLING NORTH. Much under employed here and almost forgotten ...... Nicholas Gledhill is still in Sydney theater and occasionally appears in fringe productions.

Robyn Nevin is the supreme being of the Sydney Theatre Company and the great Wendy Hughes is the goddess of the Australian screen.....see NEWSFRONT for that confirmation. The late great John Hughes such a genuine Australian man in his perfect realisation of the irresponsible but lovable main male character "Logan". This film is Australian screen perfection, however the end credits come too early.

Didn't do anything for me

(1983) Careful, He Might Hear You DRAMA

The winner of 8 Awards Australian Awards including Best Picture- i have no idea why! Uninvolving and through the eyes of an 8 year old nicknamed P. S. about two sisters bickering over full custodian over him after losing his real mother and being abandoned by his actual irresponsible father. The story takes place during the 1930's with two aunt's, one who the young boy has built the most rapport with, who has depleting health with a husband whose out of the job and the other as the very wealthy and healthy single aunt whose proper! The young boy prefers to live with the poor aunt despite health and financial issues because he build the most rapport with as opposed to the well groomed aunt who is very privileged- all I can say is that if we can all be this lucky and this film fails to convince "I" as an audience otherwise! Another major problem is that this film doesn't quite explore all the other options, such as a "buy out" if the wealthy aunt wanted custody of PS that much! Not good enough.

"Careful He Might Hear You" is a movie that is hard to forget. Although it enjoyed a certain amount of success when it was released in the mid-1980's, it seems little known today. At the time of writing, this is the seventh review on IMDb. By way of comparison, Mad Max has 220 reviews, but I know which one I think is the enduring Australian classic.

The filmmakers had a great starting point, Sumner Locke Elliott's haunting novel. Although many a great book has been mangled when made into a film, that wasn't the case here. The film not only captures the essence of Elliott's work but also recreates an era that is now long gone.

Set during the Depression in 1930's Sydney it is the story of six-year old PS, played by Nicholas Gledhill in a heart-wrenching performance. After his mother dies, PS is raised by his Aunt Lila and Uncle George (Robyn Nevin and Peter Whitford). However, when his wealthy Aunt Vanessa returns from England, PS is forced to live with her following a custody dispute. Vanessa, played by Wendy Hughes, is beautiful and sophisticated with upper class manners, but underneath are deep insecurities, which PS discovers in dramatic fashion.

Vanessa showers PS with gifts and provides the education the struggling Lila and George can't match, but he is lonely and unhappy. He withholds from Vanessa the one thing she wants most, and the only thing he has power over, his affection. PS emotionally destroys Vanessa, who decides to return to England, allowing PS to return to Lila and George. However PS is sensitive enough to know the unhappiness he has caused Vanessa and regrets it. Then fate intervenes in an unexpected way.

Surely the biggest challenge for the filmmakers was in creating a screenplay that translated Sumner Locke Elliott's intimate work to the screen, so much of which centred on PS's thoughts. Without resorting to narration, all was conveyed through the abilities of the actors, a beautifully balanced script and an extraordinary musical score that seemed to express their unspoken thoughts.

The score for this film was by Ray Cook, an expatriate Australian who died in 1989. He has one other score to his credit, "Silent Reach", a little known 1983 mini-series, although he was also involved in arranging songs for 1985's "Rebel". His score for "Careful He Might Hear You" is in a similar vein to Vaughan William's "The Lark Ascending" with achingly beautiful violin solos that merge with full orchestra. It is wrong to simply define it as one of the greatest Australian film scores; it is a work that can stand comparison with some of the best scores of all time.

Although "Careful He Might Hear You" is almost 30 years old, it hasn't dated. Set in a time 50 years before it was made, there really isn't much that connects it to the 1980's. It did justice to Sumner Locke Elliott's novel, but also stands as a powerful work on its own. It's probably a little hard to find these days, but is well worth the efforts of anyone who does.

Two estranged sisters vie for custody of their preteen nephew, not always considering his feelings, in this compelling Australian drama from 'Travelling North' director Carl Schultz. As per the title, the film pivots around what everyone says about the boy behind his back, and the film is blessed by a deliciously complex sound design in which background discussions overlap with whatever the boy is doing. Nicholas Gledhill is very well cast as the protagonist with an expressive face that tells all as he listens to the adults converse, extrapolating what he can. John Seale does a great job shooting Gledhill in intentionally intrusive close-ups and with several gliding shots throughout, 'Careful He Might Hear You' is an incredibly good- looking film. If the movie does not totally work, it is due to becoming too sentimental for its own good, especially towards the end. Wendy Hughes (as the wealthier aunt) could have also benefited for some more characterisation as she comes off a little too much like an evil stepmother. Generally speaking though, this is a captivating look at two sisters with opposite approaches to life both trying to parent properly in wildly different ways and how the boy learns to finally assert himself when things do not go the way he wants. In other words, it is just as much a tale of growing up as it is a story of sibling rivalry regarding custody of him.

Australian cinema at its best

My favourite Aussie film. The ping boy is sensational in the role. Great casting all around. Wendy Hughes is stunning in the role. A forgotten gem of Australian cinema. All you hear about is Muriel's Wedding and The Castle. This one surpasses them.

Laid on thick but lovingly

Very watchable and lovingly photographed view of a child in trouble. Good acting all round and period reconstruction. I liked the irony of the ending, how what he wished for was not quite enough. It would be fascinating to watch a sequel - the child as adult. Couldn't disagree more with the view that the child is to blame by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. He's a child under pressure for God's sake. Just wish there was a bit less of the rapturous music.

Careful, This is Excellent ***1/2

One of the best British movies that I've seen. This is certainly in the tradition of the 1946 heartbreak "Brief Encounter."

This gem of a film deals with the ensuing custody battle between a couple and the wife's sister. The problem is that their third sister, the mother of the child, has died and the father, an alcoholic, is not capable of raising the child. We learn that at one time the father had a romantic interlude with his wealthy sister-in-law.

The little boy, Nicholas Gledhill,gives the most phenomenal performance. Interesting to read that this young lad has never appeared in another film. The cruelty that this child has to go through when he stays with his wealthy aunt-from the children from the private school that he attends. The film demonstrates how mean other children can be.

The film is so good because it shows two diverse sisters-one who is wealthy and the other, poverty stricken especially when her husband, a defeated candidate from the Labor Party, loses his job.

The musical score is fabulous and absolutely haunting. The ending will tug at your heart with its Titanic like tragic occurrence.

This is a memorable film, well told.
