Superior cop comedy-drama

Warning: Spoilers
Although on the face of it, OH! MY COPS! is a typical police buddy Hong Kong comedy drama from the 1980s, it turns out to be something else entirely. Ostensibly it follows cops Kent Cheng and Wong Ching (who would play pretty much the same roles in a follow-up Danny Lee movie, COP BUSTERS), it actually shines a life on the day-to-day goings-on of a typical Hong Kong police department, with all of the drama and hijinks that come from that set-up. The humour is raucous and in your face, while the performances are nicely judged, not just from leads Cheng and Ching but from supporting players like Stanley Fung too. It's quite hard to make a tight narrative with a large ensemble cast as there is here, but Lee is experienced enough to make it all hang together. A fast pace and plenty of incident, along with a smattering of surprises, make this a superior film of its kind.
