Chances are good that, if you know me in the real world, you’ve heard me repeat/paraphrase/mangle the Samuel Johnson quote, “[W]hen a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” I believe that deeply.
Allow me to mangle/paraphrase the quote further, because while Johnson never said, “[W]hen a man is tired of ghosts, he is tired of the afterlife,” I’m beginning to believe that I am, indeed, suffering from ghost fatigue. Which is not, in fact, a less appreciated Mission: Impossible sequel.
The show with the poor fortune to trigger this growing apparition-apathy is Paramount+’s middling boo-dunnit School Spirits. But it could just as easily have been ABC’s middling comedy Not Dead Yet or a mini-marathon of CBS’ Ghosts or lingering memories of last summer’s instantly forgotten (but actually better than middling) Netflix series Boo, Bitch. On television, ghosts solve crimes,...

Exclusive: It’s going to be a terrifying Thanksgiving. Hulu’s horror event series Into the Dark has set Kerr Smith (Riverdale), Reign Edwards (Snowfall), Peter Giles (Man Seeking Woman), Courtney Henggeler (Cobra Kai), Taj Speights (Grey’s Anatomy) and Antonio Raul Corbo (Broke) for the “Pilgrim” installment of the Blumhouse Television series.
Into the Dark includes 12 feature-length episodes, released each month over one year and inspired by a holiday, featuring Blumhouse’s signature genre/thriller spin on the story. Marcus Dunstan directed “Pilgrim” and co-wrote it with Patrick Melton as well as Noah Feinberg. It will premiere on November 1.
“Pilgrim” is inspired by true events and follows Ms. Anna Barker, who invites Pilgrim re-enactors to her family’s Thanksgiving in an effort to remind them of their privilege and help them bond. When the “actors” refuse to break character, the Barker family learns that there is such a thing as too much gratitude.

As the calendar creeps closer towards the Halloween season, we have a brand new month of VOD and Digital releases coming our way throughout the month of August. Things kick off on the 2nd with the latest installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series, School Spirit, and the directorial debut of Jason Mewes, Method in the Madness, also hits various platforms the same day.
August 6th is a very busy day for digital releases, as we have 10 different films coming out that day, including Brightburn, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Night Sitter, and Perception. Nekrotronic, featuring Monica Bellucci, arrives on the 9th, and just a few days later, The Banana Splits Movie hits digital on the 13th, and I’m still not sure what to make of it, but I will definitely be watching that night to see just what on earth they’ve done with these classic TV characters.

Another day, another round of Star Wars: The Force Awakens goodies. Today, it’s a few new stills from the film, shared on Twitter by @StarWarsJunk. There’s an extreme close-up of Chewie, a shot of Rey and Bb-8 hiking in the woods (or something), another of Poe Dameron clearly having just had an intense conversation with his droid compadre and finally General Hux taking a meander with Kylo Ren. Have a look below.

Power Up! #4
Written by Kate Leth
Illustrated by Matt Cummings
Published by Boom! Studios
Well, it seems like the last issue’s wish for action to pick up has been answered.
The issue opens with Amie’s neighbors Sal and Derek receiving some of Amie’s mail while listening to a silly pop song on the radio. It’s an adorable scene with the happy couple drawn in warm colors by Cummings as Sal takes the trash out. However, it doesn’t last too long when Derek in typical Magical Girl genre fashion gets possessed by some weird space thing to become the monster of the week to draw out our heroes…
Who are doing laundry at Kevin’s place and helping him clean up.

On Friday, I attended the Fresh Romance panel moderated by Janelle Asselin, a former editor at DC Comics, Disney, and Comics Alliance and the founder and current editor-in-chief of Rosy Press. Rosy Press’ only monthly title is Fresh Romance, which is a digital romance anthology comic that comes out on the last Tuesday of every month and contains three ten page stories that are usually serialized. The comics can be found on Comixology or the Rosy Press website and are just a click away.
Currently, Fresh Romance has two stories running and one that has recently wrapped off. There is “School Spirit” written by Kate Leth (Bravest Warriors) with art by Arielle Jovellanos (Jem Annual) and colors from Amanda Scurti. “School Spirit” is a high school romance about two lesbian teens pretending to date boys so people won’t find out about and also has magic and superpowers. Beginning with The Student Nurses in 1970 and culminating with The Candy Stripe Nurses in ’74, these softcore sex films appealed to a broad audience and helped start an entire subgenre: the young nympho professionals. Thanks to the boxoffice success of The Student Nurses, (the first title ever released by New World Pictures), films surrounding the sexual exploits of stewardesses, teachers and every other female-dominated occupation became ubiquitous throughout the decade.
What set the Corman Nurse titles apart from the rest was the surprising social and political commentary that was often intertwined within the sexual escapades. Indeed, several of the nurse films touched upon such weighty issues as abortion, civil rights, pollution, drug addiction and group therapy. Corman was a shrewd businessman and knew what kind of hot button topics would appeal to the young exploitation audience.
He would essentially give young filmmakers free reign with the script, as long as they delivered certain non-negotiable elements.
