Netflix and Mattel, Inc. are developing “Masters of the Universe,” Mattel’s iconic franchise from the 1980s, into a live-action motion picture with Kyle Allen (“West Side Story”) set to star as Prince Adam/He-Man, both companies announced on Friday. The project was formerly in development at Sony.
The live-action adaptation is expected to begin production in summer 2022.
The Nee Brothers co-direct from a screenplay written by the Nees and David Callaham.
In “Masters of the Universe,” an orphan named Adam discovers he is a prince destined to be the savior of a faraway land and must quickly learn of his power and the importance of saving his true home from an evil force.
“‘Masters of the Universe’ is an iconic property that shaped the imaginations of an entire generation of kids with the message of becoming the best version of yourself,” Robbie Brenner, executive producer of Mattel Films said in a statement.

A She-Ra live-action series is in early development at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.
As the project is in the very early stages, no writer is currently attached. DreamWorks Animation will serve as an executive producer after recently producing the Netflix animated series “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” However, the live-action version will be a new, standalone story and will not be connected to the animated show.
Should the project go to series, it would mark the first live-action adaptation of the She-Ra character. She first debuted onscreen in the animated film ” He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword” in 1985 as part of the “Masters of the Universe” franchise before spinning off into her own cartoon series, “She-Ra: Princess of Power.”
In the original animated series, She-Ra’s real name is Princess Adora, the long lost twin sister of Prince Adam, a.k.a He-Man. She was kidnapped...

Most titles from the memories of the Children of the 80s have been announced for film adaptations, only to languish in development hell. Thundercats, Voltron, and Masters of the Universe have all been promised to loyal fans for years, especially in the wake of the success of Michael Bay’s Transformers —with no payoff for the waiting.
Many fans, though, would rather not see their favorites come to life than to see them done poorly. This is a mistake that Hollywood is taking a gamble on by selecting Masters of the Universe to be dragged out of mothballs and dusted off for fans of the most powerful man in the universe—He-Man. Sources close to Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have announced that G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Step-Up series director Jon M. Chu is in talks to bring He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to life.

I’m trying to remember: What is the appropriate gift for the 25th anniversary of your cheesy children’s cartoon fantasy adventure series? Is this the flaming-sword anniversary? Or is it the magical-tiara one? From a Mattel press release: For the honor of Grayskull! 2010 marks the 25th Anniversary of She-Ra, one of the world’s most popular female superheroes and star of the hit 1980s animated television series, She-Ra: Princess of Power. She-Ra, also known as Princess Adora, is the twin sister of He-Man (Prince Adam) and the lead heroine in the Masters of the Universe® franchise. First introduced in March 1985 in the animated feature film, He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, soon thereafter She-Ra was given a spin-off television series, She-Ra: Princess of Power, which began airing in September 1985.
