Good Tv Movie
andrew_edmonds19 November 2000
This is a better than average tv movie, but most Martin Sheen movies are. In this one he plays a scientist testing nuclear warfare. His acting is great. I like watching movies that enables you to learn something from it and it's like the makers of this movie want that message to get across to the viewer.

Not Quite the Same Impressions

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film in a movie theater with a group of friends from our Catholic church. Apparently, I was not as impressed as the other reviewers already published concerning its anti-nuclear weapons message, since I didn't even remember THAT aspect of the story until reading their reviews.

What I DO remember is that any non-Catholics viewing this film would have come to the false conclusion that, as many of them already incorrectly believe, Catholics do indeed worship Mary, the mother of Jesus, as some sort of pseudo-goddess. My friends and I were absolutely outraged by this particular facet of the story, so much so that any other message the film-makers were trying to communicate was completely overshadowed. There are a lot of good, well-known actors and actresses in this movie (though, perhaps, they were less so when it was made), but I was truly embarrassed for them in being associated with this production.

I am the screenwriter for this film.

It was fun developing the story and writing the script. This movie is currently on YouTube for anyone interested. I wrote in 1983 at the height of the fear of nuclear war among Russia and the US. I wanted a story that showed a way out of the stalement the world found itself in.

A fascinating blend of science and religion.

I saw this wonderful movie on video many years ago and was completely swept up in it like the rest of us who had gathered to watch it. The development of the main character whose scientific background leads him to a religious revelation really hit home for me.

Looking for a copy of this movie to buy.

I have always been a big Martin Sheen fan, & respect his political views. He would have made a great REAL President. I first saw this movie when I met the Producer, through his daughter, & his wife, in Anchorage, Alaska in 1986. I think this was a movie to be watched,to inform laymen of the possible out come of nuclear testing. I also love the religious note. I thought it was a real message, & I thought the message should be out there for everyone to know the possibilities. I would like to buy a copy of this movie for my collection. If anyone has a copy, Please let me know.

unforgettable

I heartily concur with the previous review.

This film was shown to me in class, it moved all of us very much and at the time was available on video, so I think most of us made the effort to see it again.

Martin Sheen carries this simple film along with a great cast, it is one of the more exceptional films exploring a world on the edge of a nuclear apocalypse. Designed to be quite convincing and very moving.

This film is nowhere to be seen now. If you find it suddenly on your TV, do make the time to sit down and remember the Reagan era when the Cold War still threatened our world. It is an idea so remote only twenty years later.

The ending is extremely moving, I don't want to give anything away but my class was on the edge of their seats as the tension is built superbly. As a Martin Sheen film you can expect a poignant purpose to the story not unlike Wall Street, but far less clichéd than other 'Nuclear' movies.
