Netflix continues to expand and add to its ever-impressive slate. Their latest signing promises to be as singular and unique as other original Netflix shows like Orange Is The New Black and Narcos.
According to Deadline, the streaming giant has just set up a new series from Mexican filmmaker Manolo Caro for the network. The as-yet-untitled series will be a half-hour dark comedy, and the premise is a doozy.
The show will center on a seemingly picture-perfect family that runs a flower shop, who secretly have lots of skeletons in their closets. A huge one comes to light when the patriarch's mistress suddenly dies and he decides to bring the children he had with her into his home to live with his wife and kids. Her family didn't know about the mistress, let alone that he had a whole other family out there. It's under these unique circumstances that the...

I should probably start by reiterating a very key point:
I don't care about diversity.
Despite being a latino actor, myself, and being the nephew of Elizabeth Peña- who was a role model for many hispanic actors- I've really never batted an eyelash over the idea of diversity on television or a desire to be represented on screens both big and small. For me, personally, when considering what movie to watch, what network to tune into, or which artist to support, it all boils down to one question: Does it interest me? I don't see skin color. I don't see gender. I see an opportunity for entertainment, and ask myself if it's something I'd like to check out.
With that said, I do find it cool when I see certain marginalized groups get recognition in an organic and natural way. In last week's column "Will Latino Audiences Continue To...

"Scandal" appears to have moved past its dependence on cliffhangers “Scandal” was written around cliffhangers in its first three seasons, but the cliffhangers have now passed on to “How To Get Away with Murder.” As Joshua Alston says of “Scandal,” "It’s no longer a political thriller with heavy-to-a-fault spy genre flourishes, it’s 'Grey’s Anatomy' in the White House. And if that’s indeed what the writers are going for, the absence of a central, hashtag-friendly mystery makes perfect sense. I’ve been suspiciously anticipating this direction, but I’m far less worried than I was. If 'Like Father, Like Daughter' is any indication, that version of Scandal would be well-worth watching, if perhaps not the Twitter fuel it once was.” Plus: “Scandal” Secret Service agent talks about his big role. Leah Remini will sub for Erin Andrews as “Dancing with the Stars' co-host Andrews is...

Modern Family is expanding!
Elizabeth Peña (La Bamba, Rush Hour) has been tapped to play Pilar, mother to Sofia Vergara’s Gloria, TVLine has learned.
Additionally, Stephanie Beatriz has been cast as Sofia, Gloria’s sister.
They will both appear in this season’s 12th episode, “Fulgencio,” which begins shooting on Monday.

The pair are likely around for a visit related to Gloria’s pregnancy — maybe a baby shower? Perhaps the blessed event itself?
In addition to several films, Peña’s TV credits include Off the Map, Boston Public and the ’80s sitcom I Married Dora.
