James Woolley, former keyboardist for the seminal industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, died over the weekend. He was 50. "James passed away," Woolley’s ex-wife Kate Van Buren wrote on Facebook. "James worked hard and played hard with Nin. He brought coolness to playing keyboards, which isn't as easy to do as playing guitar or drums. Those years were truly magical and quite an adventure." Woolley first joined Trent Reznor’s group in 1991, playing on the inaugural Lollapalooza tour. He continued as part of the group through the Broken Ep and the quadruple platinum-selling LP, The Downward Spiral. For his work on Broken, Woolley earned a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Woolley later earned a second Grammy for Best Metal Performance for his work on “Happiness in Slavery” at Woodstock '94. Former Nin bandmate and Filter frontman Richard Patrick wrote on Instagram, “I miss my buddy. #nin #gonetoosoon” Woolley is survived by his three children.

Having weathered a public split, Jewel appears to have put the pieces back together: She's in a relationship and finally opening up about her new beau. "We've been together almost a year," the singer-songwriter says of football player boyfriend Charlie Whitehurst in the new issue of People. And while they've been dating for a considerable stretch, the Never Broken author - who is on her Picking Up the Pieces tour through May - says they made a point of keeping it under wraps in the beginning. "I was very slow about going public," says Jewel. "We're not people to go out on 'the scene.

It's been only one episode since Carol told Rick that he needed to solve Jessie's spousal abuse problem by offing her horrid husband, and that plot accelerated into overdrive during this week's installment of "The Walking Dead," titled "Try."
No, Rick didn't actually kill Pete, but the two men had a gnarly fistfight that started in Jessie and Pete's house, smashed out their front window, and continued onto the streets of Alexandria, where everyone looked on in horror as the two men rolled around and beat each other to a bloody pulp. Earlier, Rick confronted Jessie with his knowledge of Pete's abuse, and while the woman initially rebuffed Rick's offers of help, skeptical of his motivations, she eventually relented when she realized that the constable's crush on her was more than just puppy love. And while Rick letting Little Rick guide his desire to separate Jessie and Pete may have...

There have been some really well-chosen songs used in this season of The Walking Dead, but there was no more apt way to open "Try" than with Nine Inch Nails' "Somewhat Damaged."
The episode began with the aftermath of Aiden's (Daniel Bonjour) death, which was partly due to his own stupidity and unwillingness to listen – a fairly common disease among the population of Alexandria. Carol (Melissa McBride) tried to make nice by leaving a tuna casserole on the Monroes' doorstep with a note that read, "We're truly sorry for your loss." Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh) left the casserole and brought...

About a month ago I shared some awesome news about the return of a rare, nearly forgotten collaboration between two giants from the golden era of industrial music: the Ep Recoiled, featuring tracks from the classic Nine Inch Nails albums Broken and The Downward Spiral, retooled with ominous intent by occult-themed experimental music pioneers Coil. Recoiled was finally picked up for official release via UK label Cold Spring, who released it to hungry fans this week. Described as “a rambunctious alchemy of magical Coil sensibilities and hi-tech (circa '90s) home mixing techniques,” the remix sessions that would eventually spawn Recoiled first reached fans' ears as a bundle of four tracks, offered via Nin fan forums as the download-only Ep Uncoiled. They involved raw tracks from the original Spiral and Broken mixes recorded by Nin's Trent Reznor, who delivered them on Dat tape to Coil's Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson (also...

In the golden era of industrial music, two legends of the genre teamed up to remix a set of tracks from Nine Inch Nails' iconic early releases, Broken and The Downward Spiral. Back then, Nin's Trent Reznor frequently collaborated with members of the pioneering UK group Coil – including John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson and Danny Hyde – and Reznor even worked behind the camera with Christopherson (shown below, on left) for the controversial mock-snuff-porn video known by fans simply as “The Broken Movie,” which is still horrifying unprepared viewers today. Christopherson and Balance have since departed this world, but their creative touch lives on in this collection of remixes from Cold Spring Records. While the tracks were never officially released, many were discovered and compiled by Nin forum members for the digital Ep Uncoiled, and they've now been remastered for CD and vinyl, along with a never-before-heard remix of “Eraser” from the same sessions.

Continuing the beautiful friendship that began with The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Trent Reznor has just revealed that he and Atticus Ross will be reteaming with director David Fincher on the forthcoming Gone Girl. Reznor broke the news on Twitter last night, as an aside to the announcement of a new Nine Inch Nails Ep. Monsieur, you are spoiling us!The Social Network's Oscar, and Golden Globes for both that and Dragon Tattoo, might have indicated a fulfilling new career path for Reznor, but this is the first soundtrack we've heard from him since the latter. There was a brief moment where he looked like he might collaborate with Timur Bekmambetov on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but it soon passed. There have been various short film projects since, but in terms of features he still seems solely interested in working for Fincher.Ross, meanwhile,...

As a passionate fan of Trent Reznor's music for nearly a quarter-century, I knew this review would be quite an undertaking, but now the time has come to step up and swing. My initial thrill came early this year, when Nine Inch Nails' founder announced that his legendary band would not only be returning to the stage in 2013 after a four-year hiatus (and five years away from the studio), but had already been at work on the new album Hesitation Marks, so the excitement and anticipation was understandably high. The title, which refers to the tenuous flesh wounds made by someone contemplating suicide, suggested we were about to visit another very dark corner of Reznor's psyche – an idea reinforced by the return of mixed media artist Russell Mills, who created the cover for the band's darkest, most emotionally devastating album The Downward Spiral. But then came that inevitable...

This Monday, A&E's sun and sin-soaked The Glades kicks off its fourth season and star Jordan Wall (who plays the overzealous Daniel Green) assembled an exclusive playlist for ETonline!
Although the show's setting plays host to a whole lotta murders, in reality, we still dream of visiting Florida's Glades!
Jordan Wall's Gotta Getaway Playlist
1. When I Come Around - Green Day
Favorite song by my favorite band. It was the first music video I ever saw, really welcoming me into the whole MTV generation. The repetitive riff in the track is so simple, yet so intoxicating, reeling you right in within the opening seconds.
2. Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand - Primitive Radio Gods
The perfect blend of melody and lyric, which never fails to affect me on some level no matter how many times I listen to it. It is the ultimate example of music and poetry being linked...

Composer Atticus Ross, best known for his and Trent Reznor’s Oscar-winning score for The Social Network and his masterful work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Book of Eli, as curated a playlist sharing his musical inspiration behind the soundtrack for Broken City – which we’ve reviewed right here.
The playlist is below, followed by the embedded Rdio player so you can listen to the album in full right here on Blogomatic3000.
Broken City follows a disgraced ex-cop turned private detective (Mark Walhberg) who uncovers a much grander scandal when he’s double-crossed by the mayor of New York (Russell Crowe).
Ross takes us along this action-packed journey with music that builds an equally compelling sound narrative, bookending the playlist with David Bowie tracks and sprinkling his own signature haunting sound from the film in between.
1. David Bowie – Heroes
2. Tangerine Dream – Love on a Real Train (Risky Business)

By now, if you made the smart choice this weekend, you're thinking to yourself, "damn, 'Cabin In The Woods' was a nice fucking surprise!" An atypical horror film to say the least writer/producer Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard likely blew a lot of minds this weekend.
However, you might be thinking to yourself. Wait, there's no soundtrack, other than the score by David Julyan of course, and what were all those songs featured in the movie? Well, don't worry, we got you. While no soundtrack disc was released, and curiously enough, the song in the trailer that people dig so much, "Young Blood" by Naked and Famous isn't featured in the deconstructed horror, the film features a vast and eclectic mix of music that includes heavier artists like Nine Inch Nails (from the Broken Ep back in '92), Switchfoot, Eagles of Death Metal and Iggy Pop, but isn't...

Most moviegoers can agree on one thing: there were way too many movies this year. If you’re (un)fortunate enough to live in New York, you had the opportunity to see around 600 new features come and go; the rest of us didn’t get that many fewer. That means that anyone who’s been put in a position to make a top 10 (or top 15, or top 20…) had to make some sad cuts. So we thought it appropriate to highlight some of the year’s most memorable individual moments, scenes, and sequences, from movies that may or may not have made our individual year-end lists. Some were from movies we didn’t love; some are from movies we didn’t even like, but all stood out. Which is no small feat considering just how insane the release calendar has become.

Hours before reviving her long-running Monster Ball Tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey, recently, Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone magazine a sneak peek at four songs off her upcoming Born This Way album ... and from the sound of things, she's not only pushing the boundaries, she's borrowing from some of the best in the business.
For example, E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who lends his prodigious skronk to a pair of the songs — "Edge of Glory" and "Hair" — or Nine Inch Nails, circa Trent Reznor's Broken era (on "Hair," which also apparently draws inspiration from '80s singer Pat Benatar's "We Belong" and the inspirational, all-encompassing lyrics of LG's own "Born This Way"). Activision and the "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" team paced themselves publicizing the full set list of more than 90 tracks that's slated to appear in the game, but they've put it all out there as of this week, and before you even make it to Soundgarden's full "Telephantasm" album that's coming bundled in the first shipment of units, you'll have a long list of core game tunes to thrash through including The Hives' "Tick Tick Boom" and multiple Megadeth and Rush numbers.

In this media-saturated age, it's getting harder and harder to shock people, especially with music videos. But every once in a while, a clip comes along that really turns heads and gets the band in question a load of (perhaps unwanted) attention. Such is the case with Florida pop-punkers Mayday Parade, whose video for "Kids in Love" has raised a whole lot of eyebrows with its graphic depictions of sex, drug use and violence. The video — which somewhat resembles the "Europe montage" from "The Rules of Attraction" — has been banned from YouTube and has also earned the group a bit of backlash from their fans, who have called it "pointlessly explicit." "The negative reaction, it bothers me," Mayday Parade frontman Derek Sanders told MTV News' James Montgomery on Wednesday (April 28). "I hate to see people say they've lost respect for us or that they're no longer going to be fans of our band,...

Even without the egg-tossing polytheists, Halloween is totally terrifying. The apples stuffed with razorblades, the candy corn, the sexy Ghostbusters — it's like every childhood trauma rolled into one miserable, macabre holiday. And while, in previous years, I'd spend the night quaking in my Snuggie, this Halloween is gonna be different. Rather than hide from my fears, I've decided to embrace them (my mom says it's Ok).

Chicago – Lionsgate and After Dark Films’ recently released their third collection of “8 Films to Die For” and this year proved to be the most uninspiring octet to date. With fewer risks taken than the last two years and less extreme failures or successes, “After Dark Horrorfest III” is terrifyingly dull.
Overall DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 What makes this year’s collection rather forgettable is the lack of extremes on either side of the rating spectrum. The first two years produced some truly excellent genre gems including “Borderland,” “The Hamiltons,” and “The Abandoned.” At the same time, movies like “Dead Lake,” “Undead,” and “Nightmare Man” should be buried in a deep hole and never see the light of day again.
I have to admit that I liked the variety in quality of the last two years more than this year, when nearly every film registered as forgettable more than good or bad. There was one notable standout,...

Rock band Nine Inch Nails will temporarily withdraw from music industry after their upcoming tour is wrapped up, so frontman Trent Reznor confirms. Plotting to hit the road with Jane's Addiction, they promise to bring "much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted" gigs.
