I've had this movie on video for ten years!

Warning: Spoilers
And, I still love watching it, each and every time I pop it in the machine. *Insert spoilers here.* Not only for the cameo appearance by Alanis Morrisette, back when her hair-do was bigger than her first name. But, also for the Machiavellian lengths to which Corey Haim had to go, in order for his girlfriend and his parents to NOT be in the same place, at the same time, as him. Priceless!

Plus, there's no denying that Ms. Eggert's fellow varsity cheerleaders weren't bad to look at. Speaking of which; there was one blooper connected to the cheerleading sequence towards the end. The JV squad appeared to have the letters "S-H-S" on their uniforms. The initials of the real-life Vancouver school where this was filmed, perhaps?

Well, in any case, I think this delightfully and shamelessly sappy movie is a perfect 10. As in, undeniably ten times better than "Legally Blonde 2" and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" put together!

Just one of the Girls

Warning: Spoilers
Horrendously bad film.

Tried watching it for a second time simply because I like Corey Haim and for the second time I couldn't even get half way.

Everything is bad - acting, directing, plot, 'jokes', characters. Just horrendous and not in a 'so bad it's good' way.

Unfunny Haim Comedy
vertigo_146 June 2004
Well, here we have yet another role reversal movie. There were many worth watching, despite the tired plot of gender reversal. However, this one is not. In previous reviews, I think I've made my point about the general decline of enjoyment for Haim movies that followed the late 80s. This is one of them.

'Just One of the Girls' is about a high school kid (Corey Haim) who tries to avoid his bullies by dressing up as a girl and attending another school. He joins the cheerleading squad and makes friends with fellow cheerleader, Marie (Nicole Eggert). Obviously, he can't keep up the charade for too much longer.

I thought this movie was utter crap, and it wasn't even funny. But, judging by a majority of reviews, it looks like fans of Alanis Morrisette or teen sex queen, Nicole Eggert, are the only ones who'd want to watch this. If you're looking for a good Haim feature (or role switching comedy), look no further than 1989. This is about the point that Haim's career tanked.

Truly Atrocious
Meredith-726 August 2003
Usually I'm a bit of a fan of the bad eighties & early nineties film featuring now has beens...but this film is so incredibly terrible that it was a real endurance test to sit through. Guys dressing up as girls has been done to death - but never so pathetically. Corey Haim's performance was abysmal as usual, Nicole Eggert was not much better. This has no redeeming qualities, even if you are a number #1 fan of an actor/actress in this piece of trash - stay away!

Did 90's Music Really Sound This Bad?
jfgibson7321 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Just One Of The Girls is a cheesy early 90's comedy starring Corey Haim and Nicole Eggert. Corey dresses up as a girl to keep from getting beat up at school. This leads to confusing situations with his friends, family, and teachers. Corey is completely unconvincing as a girl, but in his world, he is able to pull off anything.

The film is more amusing as a so-bad-its-funny mess, and struck me as existing in the same universe as Vanilla Ice's movie. There were some parts that worked the way they were intended, also. I enjoyed how the lead bully was smitten with Corey's female counterpart, and Nicole Eggert actually made you feel bad for her.

It's completely predictable and totally ridiculous, but I found it all very entertaining. The cameo at the end by Alanis singing early 90's dance pop was icing on the cake. I'm only giving it a four because it's not a well-made movie, but I thought it was a lot of fun.

One of the better identity-switching movies from the 90s..
KnatLouie26 October 2008
  • Not that that's really saying much, but this movie was actually quite decent. Amazingly watchable, all things considered.

Okay, here's what you get from this movie: A young Corey Haim (of "The Lost Boys"-fame), going undercover as a girl, to avoid getting beaten up by the school bully, Kurt (Cameron Bancroft of TV-fame only).

Originally, his plan is to just disguise as a girl to get past the bullies at the entrance, but once he's inside the school, a bunch of teachers comes over to him and asks him why he's not in class - and since it's his first day at school, he's forced to introduce himself as being a girl - thus ensuring that he's gonna have to wear a dress all year long. But things don't go as smoothly as planned, because suddenly he falls in love with this girl, Marie (played by the gorgeous Nicole Eggert), but he can only become her best friend, since he cannot reveal to her that he's a guy! Furthermore, his parents are unaware of his problems, so he constantly has to hide things from them, so they wont find out about it, which makes for a few funny scenes.

Anyway, apart from a tiny cameo by Alanis Morrissette, there's not much to look for in the supporting cast - unless you're a fan of Lochlyn Munro (from "Scary Movie") perhaps, who plays Marie's annoying ex-boyfriend who wants to push her into having sex with him before she feels ready. The director, Michael Keusch is mostly known for his straight-to-video Steven Seagal actioners (Attack Force, Flight of Fury, Shadowman), and some unknown German stuff, so this movie really stands out on his resumé as being something completely different.

Overall, this movie (called "Just One Of The Girls", rather than that other lame title) had a somewhat clichéd premise, but pulled it off quite nicely with a decent and likable performance by Haim and Eggert, coupled with a hilarious performance by Bancroft, as the love-stricken bad guy, who tries to get in touch with his softer side, in order to impress the woman of his dreams - who coincidentally looks like a guy.

By the way, if you liked this movie, then you're probably gonna love this one, called "Blown Away": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103843/ - starring both Corey Haim, Nicole Eggert, AND Corey Feldman!

A very underrated cross dressing film
lisafordeay3 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Just One Of The Girls is a Teen Romantic Comedy that came out in 1993 and stars Corey Haim as a young teenager named Chris who is constantly being bullied by one of the guys in school and can't even get into school without being pushed around. So Chris decides to disguise himself as a girl only for his guise to be permanent at his school. Problems arise however when he falls in love with a girl who becomes friends with him in school. Chris eventually gets a shock when he finds out that the girl he became friends with as a girl is actually the sister of the guy who bullies him in school. So how far can Chris go as a girl at his school?

Overall its a silly film about a guy who becomes a girl and it reminds me of She's The Man only gender swapped for example in She's The Man its a girl that disguises herself as a boy whereas in this film its a guy who becomes a girl.

If you are into these films then do check it out.

Alanis, Alanis, Alanis

Alanis Morrisette (pre-makeover) as the teeny-bopper singing 2 minutes before the credits roll - what else is there to watch in this movie? Alanis' mere pre-introspective presence is worth the rental!

Horrid
d_m_s24 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really like Corey Haim and will give any film he is in a go.

This film was horrendously bad. Everything about it was awful. The script and direction was like a student production. Apart from Haim the acting was atrocious too.

On top of that there was this really horrible, cheap-sounding score that was constantly in the background.

The film just seemed to be a sequence of random scenes without any progress towards any kind of storyline (for the small part of it I could stand to watch).

This film was so incredibly horrid that after about 15 minutes I just could not bear it and had to turn it off, and I generally have a high tolerance for what some people might deem 'bad' films.

It's not THAT bad.
woodspritegardens22 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've tried to watch some films, that I forwarded through, this wasn't one of them. One might have to be from the 80's, to fully appreciate the nuances of the times. The nudity, was not needed, especially supposedly depicting teens, aka underage girls. The coach, was terrible, to pressure a kid so. These days, boys ARE allowed on cheer teams. Anyway, it's just a silly story for entertainment, that actually isn't riddled with profanities like most of movies made today are. To whomever complains about Cory's acting, it's a wonder he could act at all, after being the victim of a child predator. That trauma caught up with him later, & he took his own life, which further traumatized his "brother" Cory Feldman, who was also victimized. A far as Alanis goes, I thought she was lip synching. The ending was quite abrupt. Did he win a music scholarship or not?

Forget Alanis, Check Out Cameron
helfeleather2 June 2003
The best thing about this movie is Cameron Bancroft and company playing a particularly nasty gang of oafish bullies who make Corey Haim's life hell. Cameron in his black leather jacket is that irresistible blend of sex appeal and menace that you get from few actors.

Very Good Movie
MyjavaGurl1 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Just One of the Girls is a well put, comedy. I recommend this film. This is one of Corey Haims top 5 best roles. I'd say number 5 actually. The Lost Boys, Blown Away, License to Drive and Watchers come before this movie.

This is one of Corey Haim's better roles. This doesn't do better than Blown Away but its watchable. Very good storyline and camera action. The film could of used more comedic elements. I never seen Corey Haim in this kind of role, its pretty amusing.

If you come across this movie, I suggest you watch it. Other actors include Nicole Eggert (Tv's Baywatch), Lochlyn Munro (Scary Movie, Freddy vs. Jason).

Trans movie if you ignore some bits
luckykayefi22 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be the first to admit that this movie has some pretty serious production value and editing issues. There's even two scenes in it that have clearlu been flipped by accident. HOWEVER, if you're willing to overlook that, this movie is actually a really touching story of a trans female character. With the exclusion of only one or two scenes that don't fit, I was able to very easily watch the movie through a trans lens, and found I that that interpretation really improved the movie by giving it a more complex, deeper purpose. It added nuance to a movie that, if taken at face value (as the writers probably intended) is really very shallow. I think one has to ask oneself, isn't dressing as a girl for so long and with such enthusiasm a little excessive, just to try to get past a bully? And doesn't getting that bully to fall in love with you (as a girl) seem kind of time consuming and counterproductive if you're not at least a little enjoying the attention? AND why would you tell such an extremely specific story of being a young boy trying on his sisters dresses for the first time, unless naybe it was true? Like I said, if you decide that Chris is genuinely trans, and is discovering that fact through this wacky, unlikely turn of events, a lot of weird, inexplicable scenes in the movie make a lot more sense. Long story short, this movie is not intended to be a coming of age trans story, but if you want to see it that way, it actually really fits, and because of this, it's one of my all time favorite movies.

a star is born

I watched this movie like 5 times and i loved it each time. But the last time I wached , I saw something I didn't think I would see. It was in the last 5 minutes of the movie. I saw Alanis Morissette singing. She was acting as a singer and she was singing some cheesy dance song. I guess if you watch more carefully you'll see wonders.

ALANiS Makes This Movie Worth The Watch!!!
AncientLegends1 September 1999
I'll be the first to openly admit that the only reason I watch this ridiculous film is because of the fact that ALANiS is in it. This movie features a few of her awesome most incredible Canadian dance tracks("Too Hot", "Feel Your Love"[Album Version and Muzzle Mix],and "An Emotion Away") from 1991 and 1992. A clip of those songs here and there are the only things that save the segments of the movie that don't feature ALANiS. Viewers get to see her gorgeous self here and there...you might want to fast forward the movie to all scenes featuring her. Those scenes are too short if you ask me. Being a fan since 1985 (When she appeared on 8 episodes of Canada's "You Can't Do That On Television") I feel that ALANiS can do no wrong in the work she does. Her performance alone in this movie is what makes it worth watching. A film that has a plot revolved around a guy dressing up as a female to avoid a school bully is just crazy. Why not face the bully in the first place to avoid future embarrassment? In all actuality, no one would honestly fall for the disguise anyway. And anyone who actually attended high school will laugh when they see the ending. But nonetheless, I enjoy this movie every time I watch it(providing I use the fast-forward button). ALANiS saves this movie from being an embarrassing failure. (ALANiS plays the game with determination, she doesn't give a damn 'bout her reputation baby.)~1992 Rock On ALANiS!!!

Goofy and hilarious
stevenfallonnyc7719 September 2022
The absolutely horrific generic '90s "dance" music throughout the entire movie notwithstanding, "Just One of the Girls" is a very funny take on gender-switching, kind of an extended end of an era of '80s goofball comedies.

Corey Haim (who is always likable, c'mon admit it) plays Chris who dresses as a girl to avoid the bully at school, and what happens? The bully falls for Chris, Chris falls for the bully's sister, and Chris is forced to keep up the act so he can do his music. How's that for the start of decent hi-jinks?

And that video cover....no joke, absolute perfection. Remember when we can laugh at stuff like this, and this premise was strictly a comedy premise? Now here we are, thirty years later, and if you are against a man dressing as a woman and going into a woman's bathroom or locker room, you'd be called a "transphobe" or something ridiculous by a lot of nutcases.

However, back at a time when people were more rational (and could define what a "man" or a "woman" is without having to be a biologist), we can laugh at the absolute craziness of the comedy that is a boy dressing as a girl and going into the girl's showers to gawk at the nude gals.

Ah yes....when comedy was just comedy, and not the sad reality.

Corey Haim left us way too early, having finally succumbed to his demons. Maybe some (or many) consider his work to be lightweight, but hey, the guy was talented even at a young age, and in his comedies, made us laugh.

For The Hardcore ALANiS Fan Only!!!
AncientLegends7 July 1999
ALANiS is the only reason to watch this movie! If they ever re-release the movie the cover should feature her picture and she should be the first one listed in the credits! The movie has some early Canadian ALANiS hits like "Too Hot", "An Emotion Away", and remixes of "Feel Your Love" (Which she performs at the end!), these songs and her performance/cameo is the only enjoyable parts of the whole film. ALANiS didn't even have to try to steal the spotlight...she must be the only reason this movie is still printed. The rest however is ridiculous far-fetched tripe which is as boring as it is disgusting(ie. The shower scene). When a film features a guy shaving his legs, wearing a long blonde wig, and sporting panty hose, you know you're in for a real "winner". The fact that everybody is convinced that this guy is actually a female is incredible, anyone could tell that it's really a guy. The acting is nothing short of pathetic (not including ALANiS), and the plot is ludicrous. Watch this film for one purpose...ALANiS. I would normally rate this movie a 0, but since ALANiS is in it...10. Rock on ALANiS!!!
