What if's and what could have beens...
KeyOrion2 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Island city is a scifi entry of a possible future earth. Set in future, (the exact date I don't remember) we find that the earth is screwed up in more ways than one. The premise of this televised movie was that humanities technology was growing at a fast pace, and they had finally discovered a drug that could prolong human life by centuries. Unfortunately it didn't pass FDA testing because we learn humanity quickly devolves into grunting cavemen, with only only a few tens of thousands who are unaffected by the devolving nature of the drug.

Now the story progresses as the remaining intelligent members of humanity are trying to rebuild society. Hence the title, Island City, which is the last bastion of unchanged humans. Amazingly they have LOTS of really advanced technology. Teleportation archways, a shield to protect the city from electromagnetic/ion storms (which now ravage the planet, who knows why) and outside attacks by the devolved members of the human race, and the city looks more like a giant CLEAN (gasp) mall.

Though you do figure with all that advanced technology why they couldn't come up with a way to break down or reverse the effects of the drug. Though looking along the multiple character back stories they told in the first hour alone, we can see how troubled the human race was in this future. Clones of soldiers which it turns out, you make a carbon copy of an individual it will have some mental or physical problem. That the city is located in a desert and of electrical storms all over the place that they need a shield to protect themselves shows how screwed up the planet got. And of course the wonder drug which extended life, but in the course of extending it, 95% of the human race was reduced to large craniums Neanderthals. All this speaks of how fast earth raced technologically without fear of repercussions of those technologies.

The only redeeming story arc in this entire show was the fine acting of Brenda Strong who plays Dr. Sammy Helding and the actor who played the character who she was married to. She had taken the drug and was unaffected by the devolving process, and so she has her life extended. But her husband refused to take the drug and continued to age normally. She still looks like she is in her late 20's and early 30's but her husband looks to be in his 70's. The arc of the story if progressed showed resentment towards the woman he loves for the choice she made. He even makes an off hand comment that maybe she should just go along with someone 'younger'. But she still loves the man she married, even as he makes a sarcastic remark in a self dignified jealousy. I found this story arc of the life choices made by two individuals very well played out.

As for technological side, the jewels which everyone is forced to wear, by law in the show, shows how far the world may have to go in order to protect itself from disease. Basically the jewels are surgically implanted in each individual to show genetic compatibility in mates so as not to reproduce a devolved specimen of man. Apparently the life extension drug has screwed up everyone's DNA so only the right combinations of compatible mates are allowed to have children. Reds with reds, blues with blues, and so on and so forth. The only people who arn't allowed to procreate are those people who have a black jewel. Forbidden to procreate. Of course we only have one individual in the show who has a black jewel, and of course he's half devolved. Of course since most technologies we see in today's world is technology we see in scifi shows, who is to say these jewels won't be seen in the future to label people with diseases such as AIDS.

I'll have to give the show a five. I'm halfway because I tend to love all scifi no matter how good or bad it gets.

This has a similar feel to Alien Nation

Warning: Spoilers
It's difficult to assess this fairly in the age of digital effects. At times this looks very ropey indeed, and then there are moments, the 'magic door' effect that allows them to hop from point to point in Island City for example, or the early cgi of the city itself, that work very well. The plot: in the future everyone has been injected with an anti aging medicine. Some people reacted well and stopped aging. But most mutated into violent, brutish sub humans with super strength and so on. The only safe place left on the planet for 'normal' humans now is Island City. There is a sort of police force who patrol the wilderness and help the few ordinary humans who still, for no good reason, live outside the borders of island City, which is where the show falls apart really. Why doesn't every human simply move into island city? Anyway, during the episode one member of the team goes missing, and because he was born inside Island City, he has no immunity to the horrible diseases in the air outside, which means he only has 48 hours to live. So the force, headed by Kevin Conroy, voice of Batman in the cartoon, and assisted by Eric McCormack and that braless woman from Seinfeld, rush to find him. Kevin and Braless are really old but look really young. Her husband didn't take the anti aging injection, so he's old, and very jealous of Kevin. Eric McCormack is the product of a Pentagon genetically engineered soldiering clone program, so there are 36 or so other versions of him running round. He's the one with the brains, but sadly he has no co-ordination, so can't run or fight. The soldier who is missing has a son in Island City who spends most of his time using his virtual reality headset for homework and pleasure, although there is a parental block on it. The replacement for the captured policeman turns out to be a half mutant. All the other inhabitants of Island City have a dna indicator on their chests, which glow in different colours, indicating who it is safe to mate with, so that more mutants are not produced. The half mutant however has a black crystal, which means he can't have sex- ever. They don't have condoms in the future apparently. The old woman's sister, rather improbably, turns up in the episode, and is very keen on getting a dna indicator so she can shag Kevin Conroy. Kevin and Braless have compatible crystals, which helps explain why her husband is jealous. They yearn for each other but don't do anything- so far. They find the guy. The half mutant and Eric soon realise that by teaming up they have both strength and brains. What next in Island City?

You Fail Biology Forever
outlandman1 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The few remaining regular humans live in a small enclave surrounded by animalistic mutants. The mutants are called 'recessives' because the trait is inherited that way. One of the characters is - get this - HALF RECESSIVE, with all the increased strength and toughness but without the bestial aggression and reduced intelligence. Also, the inhabitants of the city wear colored crystals making their genetic status clear, to prevent the wrong kind of couple forming and producing the wrong kind of offspring. That would be fine, except there are THREE colors (should only be 2, carrier or not) and people are forbidden from mating with anyone whose crystal is a DIFFERENT color (should be, 2 carriers may not mate).

This script was in desperate need of review by someone who knows what 'recessive' means. Little wonder that this back door pilot was not picked up for a series.

Who writes this junk?
Tracer15 December 2000
The turning point in my "enjoyment" of this obvious TV-series pilot came when the heroine announced that no one in this future post-apocalyptic world is allowed to have sexual relations with anyone not of a "compatible" genome type, for fear that they will have killer mutant babies. It's the 21st century, and no one's heard of contraceptives?

I turned off the TV at that point.

WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH SOMEONE YOU HATE
bbrasher129 December 2001
On second thought, that would be cruel. It's a big nothing of a movie with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Violent mutants, brought about by the side effects of some heart medication, threaten the existence of the title city and instead succeed in torturing anyone who sits through this sorry excuse for a made-for-tv movie. So lame, it actually hurts. The only advantage for me was that I caught it on tv rather than being suckered into throwing away money to rent it at Blockbusters, so consider yourself warned.

TV TORTURE TIME
bbrasher15 January 2002
I turned this one on because I it sounded interesting. In a futuristic society, a scientific experiment goes wrong, creating hideous mutants and a hideous viewing experience for anyone unfortunate enough to sit through this toxic waste of a movie. It's so dull and lame it hurts to watch it. OH well, part of the fun of watching bad movies is getting to write about how much I hate them and having it appear on IMDb. (Keep up the good work guys!)

Sure to make my TOP 10 list of worst movies ever.

Had Potential
tclah91812 July 2006
I have seen the movie and did like several of its characters and the movie had very good potential. I think that if they had had a bigger budget it would have made a very good Sci-fi series. The story line and characters were there, I just think they didn't go into it with a real push for the series it was meant for. Greg 23 and Lt. Mindy are just a couple of our favorite characters, would have love to see how they evolved during the series.

All in all though it was a good movie with great characters. My family did enjoy watching and have watched a few time, it is a good comfort movie and one you can watch with pretty much the whole family. We would also be interested in buying it on DVD if it was ever to be released.

Good flick for it's type
VickyC6 August 2005
Although it was a low budget film, it had a great concept and reminded me of some oldies but goodies that I re-watch occasionally (Genesis II, Planet Earth, Damnation Alley, Ultimate Warrior etc). The casting was pretty good and there was some real chemistry between the actors. Special effects are about what you expect from the low budget but did not distract from the film. The folks that really disliked it probably are not big fans of the low budget "B" sci-fi type films and may like the big budget blockbuster flicks at the theater that have the backing for better scripts and effects. I am glad that I had the chance to tape it from a TV broadcast. Hopefully, it was not edited too much. I am having a friend dub it on to a DVD for me so it will keep it's quality in my library and not deteriorate. Any "B" sci-fi fans out there will enjoy watching this. I would have really liked to see it released as a series, just to see where the writers wanted to go with the basic idea.

Not the best since sliced bread, but darn it all, I LIKE IT!
gooffeefree7 May 2004
I really wanted to see this thin become a series when I saw the pilot. A lot of people tanked it, as you can see, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been great. I've seen many a bad pilot that spawned long lived and enjoyable shows. The plot was great. Attempts to produce a "fountain of youth" medication succeed, but trigger a recessive gene present in a large amount of the population which causes them to sort of devolve to the stage of Cro-Magnon man. I really enjoyed the premise and some of the characters. Some of the details were hard to swallow, like the level of tech available to folks in the cities, but none of that is too terrible. I really enjoyed it. I'm a sci-fi fanatic and there are some things that just appeal to me as far as story elements and plots go. I'm willing to overlook some of the less than mediocre acting on the part of certain characters and lower production values if it has a story line that I can really get into.

If you keep in mind that it's meant to be a series for a pilot and not expect feature film quality acting and cinematography, and are a fan of real sci-fi, you will definitely get into this.

It entertained me
ladywyrmling2931 August 2006
I really was looking forward to the series that this was the pilot for. I was amused and entertained by the show, and after all isn't that what good sci-fi is? Entertainment? If you want some big commentary on society, or if you want characters who are less cheesy, it might not be for you, but if you are looking for just a way to lose yourself for a couple of hours, this movie was great. I will be waiting for it on DVD. Perhaps if enough people clamor for it, SciFi may pick up a copy and look at it seriously. It may turn out to be the next SG-1 or Eureka with the correct writer in charge. I liked the characters and I think they really could have made something with what they had. I would have enjoyed watching the characters grow and perhaps seeing what they introduced next.

Good movie but missing something
Hyper-Nova31 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
For the year this movie was made the CGI was good. The over all plot was great but it was missing some things I would like to have seen. I hope it comes to DVD real fast. I am always looking for it on TV. It shows what could happen if man found the fountain of youth, and the monsters it creates. Were there is a law were being intimate with the wrong person is illegal. In a time in the future were cloning is legal V.R. is real. Transportatin via phone line is like walling through a door. this movie is for the people who like sci-fi but no real action. This movie could almost be a look into the future. All the stuff in the movie could have in the not so distance future so watch out people.

Movie review and desire to own it.
ffedarko15 July 2017
This movie was one that my daughter and I enjoyed watching when it first came out. Not the best of sci-fi. But as a lot of reviewers have cited, I agree that it had great potential to become a series of 20th century morality tales similar to what Star Trek offered in the late '60s. There were so many aspects of pitfalls of society coping with science gone bad and its impact on people's lives, social institutions, relationships, and morality. Also enjoyed seeing Brenda Strong, Eric McCormack, and Constance Marie early in their careers. We were sorry that the show didn't get a chance to develop its potential.

Would love to find out where I can pick up a copy of the movie!

I wish the Sci Fi Channel would pick this up and run with it!
michael_macintosh10 December 2005
After all these years, I still remember this pilot as having a HUGE amount of potential. The characters were pretty solid and the premise was really interesting. I could totally see this becoming a series on the Sci Fi Channel. Granted, it had some minor problems. And I'm sure it didn't test well back in the mid 90's (back when the Sci Fi world had to rely on regular network TV executives, which have proved time and time again that they have absolutely no concept of what makes good science fiction).

If any of you Sci Fi Channel execs are browsing IMDb, why don't you buy the rights to this one and make a series out of it? I'd sure watch it.

A great sci-fi pilot
aker25 June 2006
A pilot for a sci-fi TV show. The show takes place in an apocalyptic future where there was a drug created that could grant eternal youth. Everyone took the drug, and things went fine... for a while. Eventually the majority of the population mutated into violent primitive beasts. Those who did not suffer the ill-effects of the drug, as well as those who refused to take it, lived in isolated cities around the world, such as Island City, which featured Star Trek-esquire shields.

Every citizen bore a crystal implant below their neck. This implant would glow a specific color. One could only mate with others who are of the same color to prevent mutated offspring. It was very interesting, the clothes were all designed around the crystal, and the nightclubs were divided into color-specific sections. "Hey baby, I see that you too have a blue crystal..."

If memory serves, the show focused around the leadership of the city, and more so on the leadership of of the police force of Island City.

It was a very cliché cast:

You had the leader guy The 2nd in command An adolescent male A mutant who was sane on the police force, who could never mate and who was also persecuted A tough guy and a few hot chicks

The teenage boy was the son of the hot chick, who was married to a very old man, who is old because he refused the treatment.

All in all, there was, and IMO still is, a lot of potential for the story.

Island City - 1994 TV Movie
nkrisfalusy28 December 2006
I saw this movie and saved it to VHS as part of my SCI FI collection and found it to be quite entertaining and fun just as a pure escapism movie. Sure the special effects were not of Star War's quality or the caliber of a WAR OF THE WORLD'S but it told a story and kept my interest the whole way thru. This one is not shown on TV as far as I know but I think it they were to show it again people would watch it and people Would like it -

I rate it a C+ and hope someday I can get a better copy of it for my collection...

Want To See It Become A Series
pchic19 January 2004
From a diehard sci-fi fan, this movie is right on the mark!!! Whoever dislikes this original, well acted, funny, semi-scarry movie should limit their movie watching to "Barney" or "Ernest Goes To Camp" Or, for a REALLLLLY SCARRY movie, watch the 1950's version of "Scrooge"!!!!!!!!!!

Not a masterpiece, but hardly worthy of such vitriol
budikavlan4 June 2002
Granted, it may be a cheapie pilot, with cheesy special effects and unknown actors, but this movie was fun to watch. Don't go into it expecting another Space Odyssey, but it's a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours if you have time to kill.

Loved It
splats_girls12 July 2006
We loved this movie and were really bummed when they didn't go to series. Really wish the Sci-fi channel would pick it up and run with it. The story line is good. It takes place in the future after a youth drug goes wrong. The youth drug was suppose to be a fountain of youth, but for most people it mutated them into violent creatures. Now the remaining people who have not been affected by the drug live in a secured city were they are trying to find a cure for the mutation. The city is pretty advanced with a force field protecting it, teleportation via telephone and a pretty advanced tracking system. Also everyone who lives there have a crystal implant that lets everyone know who is genetically compatible, so as not to breed any more mutants.

They characters are pretty good too, there is Greg 23 who is a clone and has like 30 siblings that all look like him and every one of them has some sort of flaw. Then there is Lt. Mindy who is half rec (mutant) he is pretty much human with the exception that his features are strong and angular and he is very strong. Pretty much most of the characters are likable it is a very good sci-fi and a movie you can watch several time and still enjoy.

Hopefully it will be released onto DVD soon and maybe the Sci-fi channel will buy the rights and make it into a series. We always wondered what would have become of the everyone and how they would have evolved.

thoughts on this movie
misticalistic21 October 2010
I saw this movie when i was a teenager and I loved it - at the time i did not realize it was a pilot for a TV show, I have been searching for it for years, I could never remember the title and it was driving me nuts. Over the years i would try searching for it, all i could remember was that City was in the title, well now i found it and I agree with most who have posted on this title. Sci-Fi really should pick it up and run with it. I think that it could rank right up there with Stargate etc. Maybe if everyone who enjoyed the pilot wrote to Sci-Fi they would try to revive the plot. If anyone has a copy of the pilot I would LOVE to get a copy of it.

Nice
floriezamangubat3 October 2023
It's a great movie to see with your family on a weekend with a popcorns on cheese and barbecue. It's a bonding moment with me and my family and especially that I am working away from home. This movie is a good avenue to sit and relax and discuss things over while taking popcorns and just laughing and guessing what is the next to happen with the characters.

It's a nice choice of movie to be played with the family members who are so dear to me. Another day at work tomorrow away from home and at least I have shared another special moments to cherish with my family. Yay! Another memories on my hypothalamus.
