Easy to bear

Warning: Spoilers
I've heard it said that a person has to be Russian to appreciate this film fully. I'm not sure -- I'm not Russian myself, but it didn't stop me from finding it a genial, lighthearted, and thoroughly entertaining film, as time spent in nature with a bunch of fun guys and a good supply of drink should be. As this is clearly the movie's highest goal, it seems to succeed with a kind of extra relish.

It's interesting that while part of the device is that we see how different and less glamorous the reality of "the national hunt" hunt his from a Finn's imagination of its eighteen-sixties-ish equivalent, this is as much as anything a way into a kind of sentimental ironic nationalism that glows behind the comedy. We may be humorously unlike the romantic picture of Russia, it seems to say, but we're unlike it in these irreducibly characteristic and lovable ways. Having a foreigner along the whole time highlights both this and the comedy.

So the title, I think, is less ironic than it might seem. But the main thing is the spirit of fun that pervades it, and the fact that it's episodic nature allows for plenty of enjoyable gags and sequences.

What shall we do with drunken hunter?
mexrim22 March 2004
I should like to underline the movie is NOT for abstinents since from a point of view it may be seen as "only about drinking" movie. The story starts when a young Finn comes to experience real Russian hunt. He has had plenty of dreams about it, so they appear randomly in the film. The reality directs him to the absurd reality that only people with delirium tremens may have known - his companions simple refuse to stop their spiritual way to nowhere and if they luckily are sober, everything turns to even greater absurdity (finding the pineapple in Siberia is my favourite one).

Note: Watch it subtitled only, because a lot of jokes are based on Russian x Finish lingual dissimilarity, which obviously cannot be understood when dubbed.

A comedy to everyone's liking
hmsgroop25 September 2000
As soon as the comedy was released it became a nation-wide success in Russia. It is brilliant in every way: the plot, the actors, the spirit of merrymaking - all this makes the comedy a national favourite. The comedy allows Russians to have a good laugh at themselves as it highlights popular Russian beliefs, makes fun of the fabulous Russian vodka-drinking and spinning yarn stories of hunters. The whole cast of actors has immediately become tremendously popular. It is a kind comedy, without excessive use of four-letter words though not entirely without them. As far as the plot is concerned the story goes on like this: a group of friends (an army general, police investigator, a writer, a young intellectual, a Finn and a forester) are about to go hunting. The Finn is eager to see a real Russian hunt with borzois, horsemen, aristocratic finery. In reality his companions drink a lot while getting ready for the hunt, get into uproariously funny straits, send a cow flying in a super modern bomber, hunt the said cow and so on. If you have a chance to see it, don't miss it. The comedy is worth seeing even if you are not a Russian. Hunters will be hunters everywhere and they will always spin yarns.

a remarkable movie and a great amusement

Warning: Spoilers
After having seen the film Kukushka from Alexander Rogozhkin, where I at least could understand one protagonist speaking Finnish language and finding the story and the idea superb, especially as I only understood only one parts speaking and was forced to try to interprete the other ones, as they did or did not among each other I felt very animated to think over the meaning of spoken word as vessel for communikation compared to visual signals and even emotional antenna. And as I now looked the Peculiarities of National Hunting from A.R. and could not understand anything of the spoken I was so amused about the happening and about the anarchism I felt all the time speaking to me as message of the film. It reminded me of the pictures I created when reading books from Bulgakow where I understood the language (as translated into finnish)but giving me a feeling of getting my chains broken which hold me to "normality" and to escape them for a while.

I felt very free when amusing myself with the Hunting without understanding nothing of the spoken but letting things happen, no matter how crazy and switching my cortex off. I thank my friend and great artist in painting, Viktor Shtivelberg, who gave me the opportunity to learn to know the works of Alexaner Rogozhkin, and I hope a lot of people would see these movies; I will do my best to give the message to others!

Peculiarities of the national humor
Zhorzhik-Morzhik8 March 2020
"Peculiarities of the National Hunt" by Aleksandr Rogozhkin is the funniest and most popular comedy of the 90s. Scenes of Russian modern hunting with the participation of the ever-drunk general, the company of his friends, a Finnish guy and a huntsman masterfully alternate with hunting scenes of hunting in Russia of the 19th century. Despite the fact that the amount of vodka drunk is measured in boxes, the characters of the general, the huntsman and the young Finn became popular favorites. The best roles in the career of Aleksey Buldakov, Viktor Bychkov and Ville Haapasalo.

Solid flick
Star_B2 October 2001
For anyone who has ever been to Russia or is amused by the hijinks of drunken men, this film is a must-see. While the film hits on a lot of stereotypes, many of the characters are right-on, especially the Army general. The plot moves well and the conversation does not lag - these Russian actors are quiete funny.
