Sex & Nudity

  • A man spreads a woman's legs in three separate scenes but nothing is really visible, and another time aggressively lifts her dress and moves his hand up her legs but stops before doing anything (it's insinuated that he's feeling to see if she's aroused).
  • No nudity
  • Several scenes of attempted or implied rape, and it's hinted at that the man is violent during sex.
  • A man and a woman are heard having sex outside.
  • A man and a woman are seen in bed together the morning of their honeymoon. Nothing sensitive is shown, but it's obvious that they're naked. Lots of discussion of a man's infidelity and affairs, though nothing explicit is said.
  • Many kissing scenes.
  • One character has a penchant for low-cut dresses, and one dress in particular barely contains her.
  • Several scenes of implied or attempted rape. None are explicit, but they're all upsetting.

Violence & Gore

  • Several scenes involving dead animals, some hanging dead in market stalls (chickens, geese, severed pig heads, animal entrails, blood) or in the kitchen (dead chickens), and a particularly disturbing scene (repeated) of a child smeared with blood playing with a canary they'd just killed (neck broken). The child is also taught to hunt, and has pheasant blood intentionally painted on their face in order to distress their mother.
  • Physically and verbally abusive alcoholic frequently screams at a woman, ordering her like she's a dog, yelling at her in a drunken temper or petulance. He's also seen to slap, punch, and bite her. Various attempts are made to rape her, and rape and violent consensual sex are implied.
  • A child is shown poking a crow. He is stabbing it to death with a stick (not shown) and is stopped by an adult. The bird has to be killed out of mercy.
  • A child throws up after being forced to drink alcohol. It is shown.
  • A man is being treated for an unspecified disease (most likely tuberculosis/consumption) and is treated with leeches. This is shown in one scene. No blood, but this may still be unsettling for some viewers.

Profanity

  • 5-6 uses of d*mn and several uses of t*tties and sh*t being chanted in a rhyme to try and teach a child to swear. Some of the later two words are used by the child (without understanding).
  • 1 use of b*tch (referring to a dog's litter), 5-6 uses of d*mn, and several uses of t*tties and sh*t are chanted in the form of a rhyme being used to teach a child to swear. Some uses of the latter two words are by the child (without understanding).
  • 1 b*tch, 5-6 d*mn, and several uses of t*tties and sh*t said in a chanted rhyme. The last two are also said a few times by a very young child. He does not understand what he's saying and is trying to please an abusive adult.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One of the main characters is an alcoholic, and is frequently seen drinking. His guests also drink heavily, and in three scenes a child is forced to drink alcohol (he throws it up and is then yelled at and called a "nancy").
  • Three scenes of a child (about four years old) being forced to drink alcohol. In one scene, he throws it up and is screamed at for being a weakling and a "nancy". In another, adults force him to drink wine and swear.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Several scenes of sexual and physical violence. Also several scenes involving dead animals.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is dying of a wasting disease (possibly tuberculosis, but it is not specified). He is shown looking thin, with dark circles under his eyes, sores around his mouth, and he eventually haemorrhages and starts vomiting blood and coughing up blood-clots. When he dies, blood oozes from his eyes.
