Screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who wrote Doctor Who: The Movie, plunges among fans of the sci-fi series to find out what makes Time Lord diehards tick
When Matthew Jacobs’s name is first displayed on screen in this likable documentary, he is identified as a “mid-level screenwriter”; it’s more of a self-deprecating description than a diss given that he is one of the film’s co-directors (along with Vanessa Yuille) as well as the feature’s star subject. But his filmography is a mixed bag, and includes several things you may never have heard of (Bar America and the cartoon Justin and the Knights of Valour), little remembered reworkings of established works, the original story for one of Disney’s least popular works (The Emperor’s New Groove), the film adaptation for one stone-cold British cult classic, and the script for 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie.

Happy birthday, Mr. David Tennant! April 18th marks the day the Doctor Who star turns 49 years young, so let’s take a moment to celebrate one of the most popular Time Lords there’s ever been.
Way back in 2005, the 34-year-old Tennant made his debut as the Tenth Doctor, assuming the iconic role after predecessor Christopher Eccleston bowed out after just 13 episodes. The Scotsman went on to lead the show through one of its most beloved periods in its 50 plus-year history before he handed over the sonic screwdriver 10 years ago in “The End of Time: Part 2.”
But he’s never really stopped playing the Doctor since. In 2013, Tennant returned opposite Smith and guest Doctor John Hurt for the big 50th anniversary special, and in recent years he’s reprised the character on audio numerous times for Big Finish Productions. As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, Tennant’s part of the Whovian family for life.

Doctor Who dropped a major bombshell on us with last night’s season 12 finale. Titled “The Timeless Children,” the episode went deeper into the Doctor’s past than ever before, revealing both her true origins and the secret backstory of her people, the Time Lords. There are many facets to it, but essentially the deal is this: the Doctor was once a mystery child with the ability to regenerate who fell through a wormhole from another universe. Gallifreyans found her and copied her power. Eventually, the Doctor’s memories were wiped and they started their life again as who we know as the First Doctor.
Fans are having a hard time wrapping their heads around all this as it literally rewrites everything we thought we knew about the time-traveling hero. To be fair to showrunner Chris Chibnall, he’s clearly attempted to line the episode up with many mysteries from...

Doctor Who reached the end of its twelfth season last night with a whopper of a finale. “The Timeless Children” did as it said on the tin and revealed all fans wanted to know about the mystery of the Timeless Child. And, as had been much theorized, the child was revealed to be the Doctor herself, with her true origins finally explained.
You see, the Doctor isn’t just an ordinary Time Lord but is, in fact, a mysterious foundling who came through a wormhole from another universe and was discovered by the early Gallifreyans. She had a unique ability to regenerate her body upon death and so the Gallifreyans tapped into this and replicated it across their species. The Doctor then lived many lives until the Time Lords wiped her memory and kept her past a secret.
It’s all so much to take in for fans, with many...

Showrunner Chris Chibnall has been playing a long game. In his second ever episode in charge of Doctor Who, season 11’s “The Ghost Monument,” we had our first namecheck of the Timeless Child, something hidden deep in the Doctor’s memories. In “Spyfall: Part Two,” the mystery was brought to the fore, with the promise that we’d find out the truth by the end of the season. Well, season 12’s grand finale – titled “The Timeless Children” – is now here, complete with all the answers, as promised. Oh boy, where to begin?
Let’s be clear, “Timeless Children” is less of a story and more of a giant infodump. What stops it from being a drag, though, is the fact that the information it’s dumping on us is so monumental, so revolutionary, redefining our understanding of the Doctor and this show’s mythology as it goes along, that we’re constantly engaged.

With John Simm having made his return to Doctor Who for the first time since 2010 in last week’s episode “World Enough and Time,” it seems like an opportune moment to remind ourselves of the long history of the Doctor’s nemesis the Master, doesn’t it?
The short video you’ll see above runs through the Master’s many regenerations at a rather quick pace. If you need some reminding, the uber-villain has gone through seven different incarnations over the decades. First, there was Roger Delgado (1971-73), followed by a horribly disfigured version (Peter Pratt, 1976; Geoffrey Beevers, 1981) and then there was Anthony Ainley (1981-89). The one-off Doctor Who: The Movie featured Eric Roberts as the Master in 1997 before the revived series cast Derek Jacobi in 2007. John Simm then took over, followed by Michelle Gomez in 2014.

As the New Year arrives, we salute a few favourite TV episodes depicting this momentous time of year...
New Year is a time for reflection on the past and resolution for the future, an opportunity to consider what you’ve achieved and what you’re yet to work on. It’s also a time to stay up well past midnight, partying the night away with friends and family, potentially embarrassing yourself in the process. That dichotomy ensures that the New Year is fertile ground for television, and the finest comedies and dramatic series use the moment to allow for contemplation amidst the alcoholic excesses. Here are twenty New Year episodes that offer an entertaining take on the aeons-old celebration - from emotional character pieces to geeky genre takes and old-fashioned barrages of seasonal comedy.

Former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy has brushed off suggestions that The Doctor could be played by a woman.
The 71-year-old actor played the Seventh Doctor between 1987 and 1989. His incarnation of The Doctor died in 1996 film Doctor Who: The Movie, and the Eighth Doctor was played by Paul McGann.
"I'm a feminist and recognise there are still glass ceilings in place for many women, but where would we draw the line?" McCoy told The Mirror.
"A Mr Marple instead of Miss Marple? A Tarzanette?"
He added: "I'm sorry, but no - Doctor Who is a male character, just like James Bond.
"If they changed it to be politically correct then it would ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show.
"I support feminism, but I'm not convinced by the cultural need of a female Doctor Who."

With Community season 6 around the corner & all 5 seasons now on UK Netflix, should you skip or watch the Dan Harmon-less "gas leak year"?
If you're enjoying watching Community for the first time, since it arrived on UK Netflix last week, the anomaly of the fourth season might be a little bewildering. Where the rest of the show is witty, enjoyable and well-versed in pop culture without being obnoxious about it, season four is almost like an exaggeration of what came before, and yet if you can get through it, it becomes great again in season five.
For those of us more acclimatised to the volatile behind-the-scenes situation on the NBC show, you might remember that there was a season there where series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon was fired, only to be re-hired the following year in an unprecedented turnaround by the network.
With Harmon reinstated, season four looks even more like a blip.

ABC’s broadcast of the animated classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas topped Thursday night with a 1.9 demo rating (surging 58 percent from a year ago), while drawing 5.9 million total viewers (up 44 percent).
Those tallies mark five- and four-year highs for the ‘toon.
Leading out of that, the live-action, Jim Carrey-fronted Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas did 5 mil and a 1.8.
A repeat of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (6.8 mil/1.2) drew Christmas night’s largest audience.
Don’t know what else to tell you here, ‘cept that something called The 12 Dogs of Christmas on The CW did 920,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating.

By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

The final fate of the 8th Doctor is a mystery no more! Fans finally have the second serving of Paul McGann and the regeneration that they have been clamoring for since NewWho kicked off with the 9th Doctor. For the uninitiated, the appearance of a walking, talking Paul McGann Doctor, must have come as a bit of a shock. After all, his Doctor had been relegated to overused clips from the one televised adventure he had back in 1996. For long time fans however, this was the first of what could be a set of wonderful presents in the leadup to the 50th Anniversary. But who is the 8th Doctor?
As interpreted by Paul McGann he is technically the longest serving Doctor having passed Tom Baker’s 7 year mark ages ago. He is a Doctor that greeted the world with enthusiasm and joy and through his performance in the movie and the audio adventures that followed,...

Alex Scarrow's Eighth Doctor adventure, Spore, is a brisk, undemanding read. Here's Andrew's review...
So far in this range of eBooks I've enjoyed the more atypical stories, the ones that feel novel rather than evocative of something I've already seen on television. Spore does not feel like a Doctor Who story in many respects. Instead, it has a decidedly American Science-Fiction flavour. You can picture the Doctor being replaced by Mulder in this story quite easily.
Alex Scarrow – most famous for his TimeRiders series, but also a designer on Ultimate Soccer Manager (a brilliant game where you could take bungs and place bets on your own team) - seems an obvious choice as an author, but avoids covering similar ground to that range here.
Set Thor-ishly in a small New Mexico town, Spore tells the story of a deadly pathogen that could potentially wipe...

The darkest Doctor Who 50th anniversary ebook so far comes from Malorie Blackman's 7th Doctor tale, The Ripple Effect...
The Ripple Effect has a brilliant idea at its core, but never quite develops it satisfyingly. Dialogue-heavy and (atypically for a Seventh Doctor story) set mainly aboard the Tardis, the story takes place partly on Skaro, and the Daleks are back. This time, however, they're nice, have two sucker arms, and speak like wind chimes.
This being a Seventh Doctor and Ace story, the “Dark Doctor” is in the ascendency (Beige coat, Doctor 7.2). Here, he has no complex and Machiavellian plan to go wrong, but he does wing it somewhat when he discovers what's going on. Instead of being devious, he seems somewhat cowardly and aloof. Rest assured dreadful things will happen in the name of maintaining order, but it could be worse; Blackman...

The big story
At the risk of overkill, it's Cannes. Again. On Sunday night, in a swanky ceremony in the Palais du Festivals, the Palme d'Or was conferred on Blue Is the Warmest Colour by Steven Spielberg and his jury.
The decision was a popular one, both inside the hall and among the critical fraternity – at least, our critic, Peter Bradshaw, thought they got it right.
One person who differed was Julie Maroh, the author of the graphic novel it was based on, who accused director Abdellatif Kechiche of reducing her work to
pornography. Peter, though, vehemently disagreed – here's what he wrote in response.
In the news
Anton Corbijn to shoot James Dean biopic, Life
Sam Mendes in talks to direct Skyfall followup
Rituparno Ghosh: Indian film director dies age 49
Eric Roberts to star in The Human Centipede...

I don’t know how I missed this earlier. In 2011, io9 posted a bit of video cribbed from the then-new Region 1 DVD release [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon Canada] of Fox’s 1996 attempt to reboot Doctor Who. It’s Paul McGann’s audition video, using an earlier version of the script. I challenge you not to howl (or moan in agony) out loud at this: [video] See io9 for more about the bonus material. (I have the old Region 2 DVD, which has no extras on it that I can recall.) Via @feelinglistless. (If you stumble across a cool Doctor Who thing, feel free to email me with a link.)...

A posh collector's book, featuring all nine of Doctor Who's regeneration stories, and more, will be released this June...
In this, the fiftieth anniversary year, there'll be no shortage of Doctor Who merchandise and memorabilia released to mark the occasion. Travel mugs, coins, teapots, prints, jigsaws... even (and this one is exciting for those occuping the overlap in the Venn diagram of people who love quizzing, tiny pieces of wedge-shaped plastic, and Doctor Who) a Who version of Trivial Pursuit.
This though, is one for the serious collectors. Regeneration is a limited edition book including six DVDs including The Caves of Androzani, The End of Time, and (trumpet fanfare) The Tenth Planet. All nine regeneration episodes are included, along with photography, and detailed accounts of each transition. The missing fourth episode of the First Doctor's regeneration story has been recreated in 2D animation, a...

I’ve previously written about why an American remake of Doctor Who would be terrible but what a lot of Whovians may not realise is how close one actually came to existing in the early 1990s. A few years before the TV Movie starring Paul McGann was released, the wheels were in a motion for a complete reboot made by Steven Spielberg’s company Amblin Entertainment to potentially be broadcast on CBS.
Thankfully the entire thing was scrapped very early into its production process and as part four of my monthly countdown to Doctor Who’s Fiftieth Anniversary, here’s why it would have been absolutely terrible…

Any Doctor Who fan worth their salt knows the basic background of Doctor Who. Eccentric time travelling alien travels the universe, usually running into some kind of trouble and having to fight monsters and save people’s lives. Simple but vague...

Since early 2011, director of the last few Harry Potter films, David Yates has expressed an interest in turning the BBC’s Doctor Who into a big hit on the big screen. However, his plans would mean a change from the current TV series by replacing the current Doctor, Matt Smith. Since then, showrunner and head writer, Steven Moffat, has said that a movie will happen, but it can’t damage the official TV series, and that’s exactly what Yates film would do.
So what’s the solution? In this article we take a look at what the fans would like to see in the film of Doctor Who that Mr Moffat is determined will happen…

What my followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ saw today: • I predict Variety goes online-only by July 2013 (if not sooner). It's clearly the direction the new owners are moving in. Variety lays off staff, plans to reduce frequency of publication • Looking like Twilight is gonna have to wait till tomorrow. Fortunately I have a ton of work to distract me from my sorrow. • The opening credits animation for *Skyfall* both harken back to the past and move Bond into the future... just as the film itself does. Here's how they happened. Bond Designer Danny Kleinman On His 'Skyfall' Title Sequence (And How To Craft A Great 007 Opener) • Trying to keep track of time zones around the planet is kind of exhausting. • It's so fucking awesome listening to money guys trying to justify why they don't need to pay writers. So the Eighth Doctor. Played by Paul McGann, he came onto our screens in 1996 and then promptly left, something which, in retrospect, was probably a good thing. Oh, McGann was fine, but the movie he was in was…well, “mildly flawed” is being kind. I’ll let some other smart fellow launch into detail on the problems with it.
But from 1996 until the 2005 series, McGann was, in fact, the Doctor. The “current” Doctor books featured his Doctor, as did other spinoff materials. Importantly, these spinoffs included the Big Finish line of Doctor Who audios.
The Eighth Doctor hadn’t been a part of the series when it launched in 1999, but he joined the audio adventures in January of 2001, and since then has gone on to have a great run of excellent stories in the monthly range and in his own separate series of adventures. While almost all of them are four or five star stories,...

Andrew Blair at Den of Geek! loves Doctor Who’s continuity errors: Growing up and having a greater understanding of a show comes with a downside. With great power comes great responsibility. And also a sense of impotent rage. Why can't I watch Pyramids of Mars now without just enjoying an old man being brutally crushed by Sutekh's gift of death to all humanity? Is it because I know Sarah's jarring line about coming from 1980 is coming up and I won't be able to stand the confusion in my mind? No, really, he does: Fortunately, after the initial grieving period for the passing of an episode's internal logic, fans are remarkably good at coming up with their own explanations for things. It is international law that at this point I should make a joke about humans seeing patterns in things that aren't there (We're working on getting Paul McGann to...

Paul McGann has insisted that he would return to Doctor Who if asked. The actor - who played the Time Lord in a 1996 TV movie - told Digital Spy that he would "love" to reappear on the show. "Being Doctor Who, there's always anniversaries looming large - celebration programmes and episodes," he said. "I'm often asked, 'If they get the five Doctors together, would you do it?' and of course, I'd do it. They've just got to ring me up!" McGann added that he is "still in the Doctor Who loop". "Although I was [in] Doctor Who for six weeks, sixteen years ago, it never goes away - it only ever seems to get stronger," he suggested. "I'd love to do that again, but that's not up (more)...

Sometimes, the movies slated for the 2012 year are only as good as their hype. A few of these flicks only look good as a trailer, but when audiences hit the theatre, either all the best parts have been given away or expectations fall flat. Not every title bears merit, but if any blood money is to be spilt, here’s a list of curios that should really be investigated.
Beneath the Darkness (Release Date: Jan 6)
Dir.: Martin Guigui.
Cast: Dennis Quaid, Tony Oller and Aimee Teegarden.
When a group of teens witness their best friend murdered by a so-called hero, they have to figure out how to expose him and avoid being killed too. Dennis Quaid plays Ely Vaughn, the pillar of the community, but also the antagonist in this film. Interestingly enough, Vaughn is the town’s local mortician, and there’s a secret that no body knows about him.

With the surprising announcement yesterday that Harry Potter director David Yates and the BBC were jumping in to bed together on a new Doctor Who movie that would have no correlation to the current t.v. incarnation, one of the speculative questions to instantly hit the minds of fans is, “What villains will they use?”.
Well as we always like to do with our on-going fantasy casting series, we are more than happy to fuel the imagination. Here’s our best five suggestions for the Doctor’s big screen threat!

The first intelligent life to evolve on Earth are a species that the Third Doctor incorrectly thought originated in the Silurian-era. These reptilian-style individuals are therefore unique in being non-human, but also not aliens. Luther's first series ended with a question: "Now what?" After all, when we left John Luther (Idris Elba) at the end of the first series, he had just seen his wife's killer -- and his former best friend -- gunned down by Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), the uncaught culprit of a past case with whom Luther had developed a strange friendship.
Luther 2, out on DVD from BBC Video October 25, begins with those words as well, though this time spoken by Alice herself, who takes on a less prominent role in the show's second series. She's in prison for the aforementioned killing; her role as Luther's sidekick is largely replaced by Mark North, portrayed brilliantly by Paul McGann (who portrayed the Eighth Doctor in Doctor Who). While Alice's presence is felt through subtle bits of dialogue (and sporadic appearances), she's largely a peripheral figure for the series.

Paul Merton's Birth Of Hollywood, Human Target, Lead Balloon and lots of Doctor Who in our look ahead at the UK TV week...
The holiday weekend telly schedule starts tonight, Friday, May 27th, with Paul Merton's Birth Of Hollywood at 9:30pm on BBC2. In the first of three episodes in a new series, the comedian looks at the early silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin and the pre-Police Academy Keystone Cops, and also reveals the first 'cliffhangers', for those not familiar with the serialised start of much of the earliest motion picture entertainment, with an unflinching look at the career of Dw Griffith, all in celebration of Hollywood's hundredth anniversary.
Human Target enjoys a season 2 double-bill tonight, Friday, May 27th at 8:00pm on Syfy. The first episode, Ilsa Pucci, is followed by The Wife's Tale at 9:00pm, in the first two of thirteen last ever episodes.

Oh, you American and Canadian Whovians without a region-free DVD player, today is your lucky day. For today is the day that the made-for-u.S.ian-tv Doctor Who movie starring Paul McGann as our favorite renegade Time Lord finally arrives on Region 1 DVD. Gary S. Dalkin’s review on Amazon is a small thing of beauty. An excerpt: [T]he most eccentrically British of programs [has] been almost entirely assimilated by the requirements of American network broadcasting. Matthew Jacobs' screenplay is literally nonsense, dependent on arbitrary, unexplained events while introducing numerous elements that contradict established Doctor Who mythology. The Tardis is re-imagined as a bizarre pre-Raphaelite/Gothic folly, while the Doctor, now half-human, becomes romantically involved with his lady companion. From the West Coast setting to metallic CGI morphing, from the look of Eric Roberts as the Master to a motorcycle/truck freeway chase, director Geoffrey Sax borrows freely from James Cameron...

Here's the international trailer for Drive Angry, the new 3D Nicolas Cage outing winging its way to our cinemas on February 25th. The synopsis is too fruity to paraphrase:
Milton (Cage), a hardened felon, has broken out of Hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon. He’s joined by Piper (Heard), a young, sexy waitress, who liberates her boyfriend’s cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton.
Now the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah (Burke), who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash Hell on Earth. But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton’s problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer...
