Over the last few years, both Jenna Ortega and Olivia Rodrigo have seen a massive boon to their careers. Rodrigo went from releasing her first single, “drivers license,” to headlining her own tour and scooped up a few Grammys along the way. Meanwhile, Ortega became a household name thanks to her titular role in Netflix’s Wednesday. As the former Disney darlings accrue more and more success, their schedules become increasingly intense. However, that seems to be just the way they like it.

When 1989's animated film "The Little Mermaid" was released, it marked a turning point for Disney animation. It was the story of a 16-year-old mermaid named Ariel who fell in love with a man she saw for a few minutes. She trades her voice to the sea witch Ursula for legs and the ability to appear to Prince Eric as a human. If she doesn't get him to give her a "true love's kiss" in three days ... three days ... she'll be not only a mermaid again but also Ursula's servant. Luckily, it all works out, and they get married.
But it's not the best message for young people, perhaps. Not that the 1837 Hans Christian Andersen story was much better. In that one, the mermaid wants a human soul, and a sea witch gives her a potion that gives her legs but makes it feel like knives are slicing them the whole time.

In the era of reboots, it was only a matter of time before Disney gave The Little Mermaid the live-action treatment. The classic fairytale follows in the footsteps of films like The Jungle Book, Cinderella, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. At the forefront of the film is Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel, the titular mermaid herself. And while Disney has been pretty tight-lipped about the film, Bailey did drop a few hints about what fans can expect.

Bailey’s musical talents are nothing short of undeniable. The actor had already made her mark on the music industry as one half of the duo Chloe X Halle with her older sister, Chloe Bailey. In fact, it was one of her performances that first made The Little Mermaid director,...

Everyone has their favorite Disney movie, and for Wednesday actor Joy Sunday, it’s The Sword in the Stone. The 1963 animated classic tells the story of King Arthur as a boy and his beginnings as one of history’s greatest heroes. But in the Tim Burton–directed Netflix series Wednesday, Sunday’s Bianca Barclay has a heroic tale all her own.

Bianca is the coolest girl in school and takes a strong disliking to Wednesday — a human game-over to all things popular and preppy.

When Disney announced Halle Bailey had been cast as Ariel in its live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid”, the Chloe x Halle singer was slammed with racist backlash by those who unable to wrap their heads around a Black woman playing a character depicted as white in the animated classic.
In a new cover story for The Face, Bailey admitted that while the racist comments were hurtful, they were not unanticipated.
“As a Black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore,” she said.

“I know people are like, ‘It’s not about race.’ But now that I’m her … People don’t understand that when you’re Black there’s this whole other community,” she continued. “It’s so important for us to see ourselves.

Another trailer for Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” dropped on Feb. 15, which meant star Halle Bailey had to deal with another round of racist trolls using social media to complain about a Black actor taking on the role of princess Ariel. It’s hardly the first time Bailey has had to tune out racist backlash. Both her casting announcement in 2019 and the film’s first trailer last year sent trolls into a tizzy online.
“As a Black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore,” Bailey told The Face in a new cover story interview. ”When [Chlöe and I] first signed to Parkwood, [Beyoncé] was always like: ’I never read my comments. Don’t ever read the comments.’ Honestly, when the teaser came out, I was at the D23 Expo and I was so happy. I didn’t see any of the negativity.”

It seems that every time news breaks about Halle Bailey playing Ariel in Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid — whether it was the initial casting news or the teaser debut — it goes viral. That hasn’t always been a good thing as some of the churn was fueled by racist backlash, something Bailey says is not a surprise.
“As a Black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore,” Bailey says in a new cover story for The Face. “I know people are like, ‘It’s not about race.’ But now that I’m her … People don’t understand that when you’re Black there’s this whole other community. It’s so important for us to see ourselves.”
She credits mentor Beyoncé (whom she referred to as “B”) for offering sage advice to her and sister Chlöe Bailey that she continues to lean on.

It beggars belief that what started out as an idle thought — to continue the adventures of detective Benoit Blanc, the world’s “greatest detective” — has resulted not in just the inevitable franchise placeholder but one of the most exciting, funny and downright enjoyable movies of the year. Shrewdly cast, it boasts one of the most brilliant screenplays of the year, not just in terms of its exquisite, laugh-out-loud dialogue and satirical barbs at pop culture but in the meticulous, meta plotting of a traditional whodunnit that keeps the mind ticking over from start to finish. Unusually for a recent Netflix presentation, hardly a minute is wasted, and it’s no surprise that a Christmas release is planned for an intelligent crowd-pleaser that hits a bull’s-eye with every beat.

Bella Poarch is striking in a short floral dress for her “villain era.” Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/Xavier Collin/ImagePressAgency
Bella Poarch was stunning in a short pink dress for her “villain era,” complete with her hair done up to resemble horns. The Filipino-American singer and social media personality claimed sudden fame through a video of herself lip-syncing to M to the B by Millie B.
The floral pink dress included a hot pink flower patten and a black ruffled neckline that allowed Bella’s chest tattoo to pair beautifully with the dress. The long sleeves of the dress seamlessly turned into lovely fitted gloves, and further accentuated the “villainous” glamour.
Bella’s hair was as important to the outfit as the dress itself, and was beautifully incorporated into the look. The front sections of the singer’s hair were skillfully wrapped up into buns that appeared like devilish horns,...

In 2009, the best film in Competition at the Berlinale was Maren Ade's Everyone Else (Fwiw, it came away with 1.5 Silver Bears, the 1 for Best Actress Birgit Minichmayr, the .5 for tying with Adrián Biniez's Gigante for the Jury Grand Prix; the Golden Bear that year went to Claudia Llosa's The Milk of Sorrow). Three years on (!), the trio that made Everyone Else worth talking up to this day (see, for example, Kevin B Lee's new video essay on a key scene at Fandor; see, too, Mike D'Angelo on the same scene a year ago at the Av Club) is back in Competition, albeit in three different films. Lars Eidinger has drawn the shortest straw, taking on the lead in Hans-Christian Schmid's rather dismal Home for the Weekend. Minichmayr's fared better opposite Jürgen Vogel in Matthias Glasner's new film, though I seriously doubt many of us will...

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
