By the Numbers Horror...
Gislef22 December 1998
...that pays lip service to the original movie...which in turn was a somewhat weak adaptation of the original King short story. As such, the focus is on the gore rather than the peripheral back-plot of why the ghost/demons are stalking the protagonist. It's a merely adequate horror movie, but don't go into it looking for a glimmer of the Master's work.

I found this a just a little bit more fun the first movie
atinder28 June 2012
I Have seen the first more then once i say, i have not it seen for a while and I wasn't to keen on it and i gave the first movie 4 out of 10

This movie,I did see the trailer for both again and for even more, i must say trailer for again was very well made as it made the movie look good.

This as not real connection to first movie expect for evil kids to come back but no longer kids as they demons now.

It's took time for it to get going as it was kept showing flashback and here and there to get the back story for first 45 of mins of the movie.

It's kind of annoyed me a little as was keep going back and forward and some of the scenes really dull and boring.

I did like the idea of how they Were brought back was cool idea but it could been done so much better.

I thought death scenes were some-What descent and nothing to bad, there were some bloody deaths in movie but not too gory.

Some of the effect in this movie was descent and really well made and some effect were poor at times as well.

The acting in this movie was really good from everyone in the cast.

I going give this 5 out of 10 (I found this a just a little bit more fun the first movie).

A different take on the story
Cujo10826 September 2012
Direct-to-video sequel is actually more of a re-adaptation of Stephen King's original story. Michael Gross plays a psychiatrist who goes back to his hometown following his mother's death. Accompanying him is his teenage daughter, Michelle (a young Hilary Swank). Gross soon realizes that they're being targeted by the men who sacrificed his sister in a satanic ritual 27 years earlier, only they're no longer human.

In some ways, this is better than the first film. For one, it features an overall darker tone. It doesn't get all sappy either, and the idea to have the gang return as demons instead of ghosts works well, also tying into a ritual from the original story that the first adaptation omitted. I preferred the father/daughter dynamic over the family one, and the addition of side characters, Maria and Jules, was certainly welcome.

On the other hand, even as demons, Alexis Arquette and company didn't come off quite as menacing as the gang from the previous flick. I think that had to do with some lame one-liners. There's also the fact that I recognized one of the gang, Glen Beaudin, from the silly 90's TV series, "Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad", so it's hard to take him too seriously as a threat. The priest character is way over the top as well, and the annoying lawnmower idiot couldn't get off my screen fast enough.

Still, this is a fun take on the King tale, and we get some interesting imagery such as death by flying tarot cards and Swank getting it on with a demonized Arquette. It's far from great, but it makes a nice companion to the first, as both have their qualities and misfires.

Sometimes they just shouldn't comeback...
baldy_man20 June 2017
Being a fan of Stephen King, and loving most of the 80's and 90's film adaptions, including Sometimes They Come Back. I only came across this sequel by accident a few days back and have only just watched it. What can I say other than it is utter dross. Its 90 minutes I will not get back, it has a weak cast and a weaker plot. I really would not bother with this at all, sometimes sequels should never comeback..

What the...?
hurdleston17 December 2005
This movie was like watching a presentation in a community college class on movie effects. I was watching it and got the notion that I could write a better movie, so I did. It took about 14 minutes. I kept feeling like they were deciding on exactly what to do as the scenes came up. No planning at all. The death scenes were laughable. The acting was too. This movie should have been called, If Nothing Else Is On, Watch This Muted Because Hillary Swank Is In It. That's basically what we did, minus the muted part. I would recommend, if you enjoy this movie, that you see a doctor immediately. There is a good chance that something serious is wrong with your head. Who knows, maybe there is a tarot card stuck in it.

Sometimes they SHOULD NEVER come back... Again (DVD)
leplatypus6 February 2006
This isn't a sequel of the first opus, but rather a remake of the main ideas of the Stephen King's short story: a childhood crime, a train tunnel, bad guys ghosts,....

If you wonder what brings the talent of a chief cooker, well consider that with the same food, one has delivered a fine meal (first one) and the other has only done a cat food (for not say worse...)...

Everything fails here: just watch the first 5 minutes, you'll understand... the following is in the same vein: no more nostalgia, no respect for the tradition (Demons enter church here!!!!!), no countryside flavor and no good casting with the so-called bad guys are more ridiculous than freaky....

But, it's amazing to see how the Hollywood life can be... Begin your career in awful movies then go win 2 prestigious Oscars....

So, be indulgent to yourself: skip it !!!!!

These family ties prove that boys DO cry (at atrocious films)
movieman_kev3 May 2012
Successful shrink, Jon Porter (Michael Gross of Family Ties and Tremors fame) is unexpectedly called back to his childhood home after his mother dies of mysterious causes with the intentions of paying his respects, selling the house and getting the hell out of dodge with his daughter (Hillary Swank who I'm sure doesn't keep this film on her resumé) but an assortment of ghostly teenagers have different plans.

So much squandered talent between Swank, Gross, and the fat kid from The Sandlot trapped in an awful script that makes the first film (of which this only shares a title and tenacious source material with) look like fillet mignonette to this ones week-old hamburger that someone fished out of a particularly pungent dumpster. Bad acting, horrible special effects, and just all-around godawful. Skip it.

My Grade: D-

Eye Candy: Leslie Danon and Jennifer Aspen get briefly topless

Watch it for Hilary Swank bedroom scene that lasts about 5 seconds.
Filmsthatmoveme201324 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched the excellent first film, (the first film will make you laugh and cry it is that good), and being a fan of Stephen King adaptions I was intrigued by the subsequent sequels, the trailer shows Hilary Swank looking goddamn beautiful, in a bedroom scene having sex with a demon type dude played by Alexis Arquette, this is the only part of the film that I found to be of any value.

When she looks at the camera, right there in that 1 second, she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, and she is quite cute throughout, she outshines and out acts everyone else in the film, so it is worth watching for her superior acting, though that is not saying much, cos all the other actors are so crap it is embarrassing, I won't add anything else because there is no depth.

And the bit at the end where the guy has the loose electric cable and the demons, having already been killed that way years before, step into the same pool of water and stand there in the middle of it, waiting for him to touch the cable with it is just so amateur and awful it is just an insult to a viewers intelligence.

I am off to find a girlfriend that looks like Hilary Swank in this film, wish me luck everyone.

Terrifying visitors from the past.
michaelRokeefe22 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Jon Porter(Michael Gross)returns to his old hometown for his mother's funeral and is haunted by evil teenagers that were responsible for his sister's death 30 years earlier. He must get rid of the ghostly demons to protect his teenage daughter Michelle(Hilary Swank). Based on the conjuring of Stephen King and directed by Adam Grossman. My favorite scene is when Jon must cut off his own thumb in ritual to bringing a halt to the haunting. F/X are better than average in this hackneyed story.I found Alexis Arquette totally annoying. Also in the cast: Jennifer Aspen, Glen Beaudin and Jennifer Elise Cox. You may find this better than expected; although not out of the ordinary.

Better than the original
cmagu9 October 2007
This is one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. It may have been direct to video, but it was theater worthy. It has everything a great horror movie needs: a great plot, the wonderful and chilling music, the great acting, the amazing death sequences, and the villain Tony Reno (Alexis Arquette) gives the movie life. It deserves higher than viewers give it. If it were up to me, i'd put it in the top 250.

The first film is good, but it was too happy for me. The third is good, but really should have been a stand alone film. This is a more accurate version of King's story, including a ritual from the story that never made it into the first film.

If you want a good horror film, watch this. You'll be happy you did.

Engaging characters -- plot a bit tired
ric-2911 December 1998
Not a bad shocker. The actors seemed to have a lot of fun making their characters quirky and interesting. Unfortunately much of the movie focuses on killing off these engaging characters. But I'm a sucker for stories that are rooted in the past, as this one is. Flashbacks gradually reveal the backstory and reflect increasing tension into the storyline of the present. This was a slickly made film with some pretty creepy moments. I'd recommend it if you liked the original.

Good cheesy direct-to-video sequel.
b_kite4 April 2019
I remember The Sci Fi Channel playing this one a lot back in the day. It's pretty much the first film redone with added gore and some sex and nudity, sadly it lacks that films budget. Overall, it's some good cheesy DTV fun with Alexis Arquette owning the whole movie with his over the top acting and corny one liners.

Not bad.
willywants18 July 2004
Jon Porter returns to his hometown after the sudden and bizarre death of his mother. He hopes to leave as soon as the funeral is over but it's too late. The sinister forces that caused his sister's brutal murder 30 years ago are back. Jon knows the nightmare can't continue. He must stand up to his fear and exorcise the demons who have risen again to take posession of his beautiful teenage daughter - body and soul. "Sometimes they come back again" features a pretty routine plot, though there are some good special F/X and an excellent cast (especially for a low-budget genre picture) to back it up. There are also a few tense or frightening scenes, lots of (Very impressive) gore but there is some bad writing but over all it's much better than it could have been. My rating for "Sometimes they come back...again"-6.5/10.

"I'm sorry... did I say doughnut?" I actually really rather liked it.

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes They Come Back... Again starts in the small American town of Glenrock where an old lady falls off a chair & dies in mysterious circumstances... Cut to Los Angeles & her son Jon Porter (Michael Gross) in informed of his Mother's death, together with his daughter Michelle (Hilary Swank) his goes back to his childhood town to attend the funeral & sort a few things out. However once back strange things begin to happen, a sinister figure from Jon's past in the shape of Tony Reno (Alexis Arquette) comes back to haunt his daughter. As past memories come flooding back to Jon a series of brutal murders take place all of which seem to come back to him & his daughter in someway. Only another figure from Jon's past seems able to help, an old priest named Father Archer Roberts (Willaim Morgan Sheppard) who talks of demons & sacrificial rituals...

Co-written & directed by Adam Grossman Sometimes They Come Back... Again was the second film in a series of three which started with the Stephen King inspired made-for-TV Sometimes They Come Back (1991) which I have not seen & continued after this with Sometimes They Come Back... for More (1999) which I have seen & liked. The script by Grossman & Guy Riedel moves along at a nice pace & has a certain air of mystery about it, I mean it won't take a genius to work things out but at least it tries to do something a bit different & keep you guessing which is a hell of a lot more than a lot of dull boring horror films even attempt. The character's are OK & no one annoys, the main villain reminded me of John Travolta as Danny from Grease (1978) & I was half expecting him to break out into a 'feel-good' pop tune at any moment! I also must say that I'm a little surprised by all the negative comments & the disappointingly low user rating on IMDb, personally I have seen far worse & I thought this was a decent way to spend 100 odd minutes but it seems I'm in the minority & no one has ever accused me of having a particularly good taste in films so you may want to bear that in mind.

Director Grossman does an OK job & the film looks fine throughout. There isn't much gore but what's here is decent, there's a cool scene in which someone has their head run over by a lawnmower with the expected blood spraying results & Sometimes They Come Back... Again is probably the only film to feature a literal death by Tarot card! The demon make up is alright.

With a supposed budget of around $3,000,000 Sometimes They Come Back... Again is a competently made film with a certain polish to it, I mean it ain't brilliant but it's far from bad. The acting is good although Arquette is a bit campy as the main villain & I think we could have done without a lot of the tacky one-liners which start to creep in towards the end. A pre fame Hilary Swank does an OK job & makes for a likable leading lady.

Sometimes They Come Back... Again was, in my opinion, a pretty good film & better than I had expected. Personally I think you could a lot worse, sure you could do a lot better but not every film can be a Citizen Kane (1941), can it?

Effectively scary sequel
ctomvelu-14 March 2009
A surprisingly good followup to the 1991 TV adaptation of a Stephen King short story, 1996's SOMETIMES 2 follows the plot of the original closely, but is perhaps even scarier this time around. A man haunted by the death of his sister at the hands of three brutes 30 years before returners to his hometown , nubile daughter in tow. The three brutes return from the dead as demons and plan to do in the guy's daughter. Michael Gross, the father from that old Michael J. Fox show, plays the dad and pre-stardom Hillary Swank plays the daughter in peril. A rather strange Arquette family member, Alexis, plays the sinister leader of the demonic trio. And believe me when I say, he is truly creepy. There is plenty of blood and violence, so the "R" rating slapped on this STV is well deserved. Enjoy. I saw it again recently and it has lost none of its power.

i liked this movie
mattjaco248 December 2006
I thought this movie was pretty good i liked the music and the amount of violence in it. However I did not like the end of the movie. The beginning was cool when the demons killed the old ladie and the leader came back to life.I did not like the middle part of the movie were jim norman got killed. I thought that john porter should have gotten the chance to talk to jim norman about his past experience with his demons. For the most part i liked the actors but i did not like the guy who played father acher. He freaked me out when he was telling john how to send the demons back to hell. I also did not like the story line to the movie three teenagers who worship the devil not the best of plot lines.

Sometimes you find a surprise...
Geff24 December 1999
SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK should not be compared to the original, which really has nothing to do with this except for the mention of a name. There is horror in this film because the evil ones are cruel, efficient and powerful. It is true horror. My only criticism is a valid one, I believe. The main evil character looks too much like Jerry Seinfeld to scare me, although he is so evil a character you may forget that for an instant. There is enough here to really scare you on a dark night. Try it.

Moderately entertaining if in the right mood
slayrrr66622 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
"Stephen King's Sometimes They Come Back...Again" isn't that bad, but really isn't terrible either.

**SPOILERS**

Arriving for a funeral, Jon Porter, (Michael Gross) and his daughter Michelle, (Hilary Swank) move in and try to put things in order. She soon meets up with locals Jules Martin, (Jennifer Elise Cox) and Maria Moore, (Jennifer Aspen) and they decide to go out and explore the town. Together, they meet the mysterious Tony Reno, (Alexis Arquette) and they immediately begin to fall for his charms. He is not that impressed, and after consulting Father Archer Roberts, (William Morgan Sheppard) about this, he begins to realize that he knows him from somewhere in the past and orders them to stay away from him. Not taking this too kindly, he begins to go on a rampage and kills all that he can in town to resurrect an army for him to control. Finally understanding the hints from the past, he races to stop him before he targets his daughter for his nefarious plans.

The Good News: This here does manage to get some really good stuff in it. The fact that this one decides to pretty much up the gore factor considerably. This one has a lot more blood than would be expected for something like this, and that is greatly appreciated. This is nicely produced through it's rather impressive deaths, as there's a severing of both ears, having a heart ripped out the chest, being sliced over virtually everywhere by tarot playing cards, stabbed and being left to bleed, and the single most creative one, being dragged into the ground by possessed weeds and left in position to have the head run over by a lawnmower. It's a lot more violent than would be expected, as there's the aftermath visible and it goes over everything. It's a great site and really leaves some great aftertaste. There's even more in the discovery of the kitchen, where it covers the floor and walls in preparation for a ceremonial ritual that is never shown, but is good enough to get some more blood and gore into the film. There's even some nice action scenes to be had from all the confrontations to be had in the film. The early 50's flashback scenes do this nicely, especially the one from the beginning where the victim is taken into the cave. That is a really great one, which also throws in some suspense as well. That is also apparent of the ending, which is the big confrontation and really does set up a grand sense of scale and importance. The setting also doesn't hurt, as being in the cave manages to get some atmosphere out of it as well. There's one last big positive, and that would be it's sardonic humor. The villain's one-liners are so jaw-dropping bad that they actually become pretty funny, like the mention of a classic joke after a complete dismemberment and several other rather nice jokes. These here are all great reasons as to why this film is rather good.

The Bad News: This here wasn't that bad, but it did have a few flaws. One of the most persistent one is that it doesn't offer up anything new. This plays out exactly like the first one did, with the exact same set-up, the same kind of villain and the exact same resources used to get to the same resolution. This can get tiring really quickly, since the beyond a few minor changes there's nothing of real interest here. The big problem here is that it virtually makes this a sequel that is practically a remake, which is not what a film needs to be, especially the first sequel to the original film. By going on the main route it does, there's little it can do for repetition and instead relies on the film's new points to prove it's watchability. The fact that the villain is campy doesn't exactly inspire a lot of threat at times, as the jokes take away a lot of whatever fear they could've had by not doing so, and the jokes can wear thin at times. The last flaw is that it can really be quite inactive at times. There's little here that really does what the ending does, provide some solid action parts to the film. This does take a while to get going, and the set-up is the same as the one before, which is quite confusing and really could've been sped up slightly. It isn't completely terrible, but these do lower the film slightly.

The Final Verdict: Really not that impressive, but it's still not as bad as it may seem to be, which in the end gives this a watchable-but-unspectacular tag. See this one for fans of the first one or are in the mood for some harmless fun, while those not really interested should seek caution.

Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity and animal after-effect violence

Solid Horror Film With Michael Gross At The Helm.
Vivekmaru453 March 2011
I wonder if these idiots have actually seen this film before they review it and give the low ratings. I give it a solid 10. The special-effects, sound-effects and all round acting is top-notch.

This film is a sequel to the film Sometimes They Come Back (1991) based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.

This film stars veteran actor Michael Gross and an added bonus: the gorgeous beauty Hilary Swank. Michael Gross isn't an imbecile to sign on for a film whose script isn't good. He thoroughly commands this film and his expressions throughout the film are believable.

Hilary Swank on the other hand is the plot device on which the film hinges on. She is rightfully chosen for the film because of her seductive looks.

The villain of the film is played by the awesome Alexis Arquette.

Plot: Psychologist Jon Porter (Michael Gross) learns that his mother has just mysteriously fallen to her death. Jon and his teenage daughter Michelle (Hilary Swank) return to Jon's hometown of Glenrock for his mother's funeral. Once there, painful memories return. Thirty years earlier, when Jon was a child, he witnessed the brutal murder of his older sister Lisa (Leslie Danon), who was stabbed to death in a cave by a thug named Tony Reno (Alexis Arquette) and his two friends Vinnie (Bojesse Christopher) and Sean (Glen Beauden). But Jon managed to throw an electrical wire into a puddle of bloody water they were standing in, killing all three of them.

Michelle becomes friends with mentally retarded gardener Steve (Gabriel Dell Jr.), as well as two girls, boy-crazy Maria (Jennifer Aspen), and Maria's psychic best friend, Jules (Jennifer Elise Cox), who used to clean her grandmother's house. The night after the funeral, they invite Michelle to go to the dinner with them, saying they would like to get to know her before she goes home for her 18th birthday. At the dinner, the girls are greeted by a boy who looks a lot like Tony Reno, even with the same name. While Maria develops a crush on him, he seems to be attracted to Michelle. He gives Michelle an old wristwatch as an early birthday present, then leaves. Maria and Jules are then murdered.

Meanwhile, Jon is pestered by Father Archer Roberts (W. Morgan Sheppard), a priest he came to when Lisa was murdered. He tells Jon his mother's death was not an accident.

Verdict: An excellent sequel, and a different take to the original. Add it to your horror DVD collection without delay...

Creepy and different, but could of done without the slasher elements
machine-132 August 2000
Sometimes They Come Back...Again is better than the original in some parts, but it is also worse. The flashbacks that appear throughout the movie are interesting and leak out information about the main character's past bit by bit. There are some good characters. My two favorites are the main villain, Tony (Alexis Arquette) who is very creepy, and Father Archer Roberts, a mysterious priest who the main character seeks help from. (Father Roberts is played by William Morgan Sheppard, who also had a similar role in Zork Nemesis, a cinematic computer game that also has a very somber, creepy mood. Check it out) The story is similar to the first movie, Jon Porter (Michael Gross) moves back to his hometown with his daughter after his mother dies. When he gets back, three demons from his past come back to terrorize him and his daughter. I smiled when several references were made to the original movie. Stephen King had put a demon raising ritual, in which you must cut off a finger, in his short story and it didn't make it for the first film, but this part of the story ...came back.. for the sequel. With all that the movie had a great, creepy mood to it, but unfortunately it begins to feel like a slasher movie, with a few characters dying miserably. That's the only element of this movie I don't like. Two characters died horribly on-screen, crying and screaming. In my opinion, that was a little inapropriate but, oh well. This movie is still good for any fan of the original movie.

Pretty darn scary and cool!
lordzedd-38 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
As you may already be aware of that I am a fan of the first movie, but I got to admit that this second installment is even better then the first in several ways. First, the demon punks are even cooler then the zombie punks. Alexis Arquette who plays Tony Reno knows how to have fun while being evil, that's always cool. The demonic effects are cool. Now my complaint, they talk about how Jon kills the three punks electrocuting them, they even show it in the trailer, but why did they cut it out of the movie? I for a party of one think that is kind of important to the plot, that would be like cutting the train wreck from the first movie. Maybe they can put it back in some anniversary edition DVD or something. If you're reading this and own a DVD company, you might want to consider it. But other then that, I give Sometimes they come back again 9 STARS.

This movie achieves what I thought couldn't be done!
Zombie-165 February 1999
That's right! It's WORSE than the original! Interesting characters? Suuuuuuuure, uh-huh, have fun in that padded room of yours. The plot, characters, etc. all could've been pulled out of the Big Hollywood Grab Bag-O-Cliches, and probably were. Think about it: The wonderful good girl, the slutty but friendly girl, the extremely sweet at first but turns-out-to-be-evil guy, the weird psychic girl. Real original, you can only find THAT in about 436 other movies. It wore out the already-tired original one, plus screwed it up even more with the stupid (and you can't say this isn't the King of Cliches, or at least some royalty) occult theme. Done in a very cheezy way, also. (Personally, though, I did find it quite funny with--that thing about the ears. But that only lasted a second, so it's not much in the way of redeeming value.)

awesome in a bad horror movie kind of way
thomas-rab7 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I love this movie. The bad jokes, the bad effects, the bad story line... what's not to love? Alexis Arquette is the perfect bad horror movie Satan. The movie is great if you want a good laugh. I have forever had the theme from speed racer linked to this movie. Who didn't love the adorable gardner. I am an avid watcher of old horror movies and if you like those then you should definitely check this out. It has the same vibe as most horror movies from the 70's and into the 80's but they had better visual effects. Although by todays standards they're pretty bad. But that's all part of the enjoyment of it. This isn't just a movie. It's an experience. I haven't been able to find this movie anywhere but if I do it will absolutely be a fixture of my collection.
