It all feels kind of junky and trivial.
tarbosh2200014 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Max Lightener (Avedon) is a Navy Lieutenant, used to staging raids with his strike team. When his fiancé, Jackie (Crosato) is kidnapped, he teams up with a guy named Luis (Quinn) and snaps into action. It turns out the main baddie behind the kidnapping is a drug-doing no-goodnik named Bobby Rico (James). Faced with such an opponent, Lightener later calls in the assistance of his strike team so he can initiate "Operation Shadow", i.e., get his girlfriend back. Also Lightener supposedly has some precognitive abilities a la Michael Pare in Blink of an Eye (1992), but that's not developed very well. Will Lightener strike like lightning or lighten his load? Okay, let's start with some positives. (There aren't many, so don't get comfortable). In an apples-to-apples comparison (or should we say Avedon-to-Avedon comparison?), Deadly Ransom is better than the other Avedon-produced film, The Silent Force (2001). While it does have a similar feel, which makes sense, Deadly Ransom has some funny knife-throws, an exploding helicopter which looks like it was lifted from some other source, Avedon shoots people while sliding down a rope like an angry, full-grown gentleman invading a DZ Discovery Zone, and one member of his strike force looks like noted pervert Anthony Weiner. This calls into question the effectiveness of his strike force. The movie contains shooting, blow-ups, and some silly fights. It's lit well.

There. Now that we've front-loaded what positive attributes we could scrape together out of the movie's 97 minutes (including the end credits), here are the problems. Avedon remains unlikable. It's hard for the audience to get behind his mission because we simply don't like him very much. You can tell he produced the movie because there are multiple scenes of his face. Evidently he believes his face is so powerful it can stop a sniper's bullet. As we all remember, Avedon played an evil kickboxer that fought David Hasselhoff in a classic episode of Baywatch entitled "Kicks". THAT should have been a full-length feature instead of Deadly Ransom. Avedon should have realized that.

The tone of Deadly Ransom just feels off, and there's no character development. Just a smidgen of depth to the characters - we don't ask for much - would have gone a long way here. That is replaced by bickering between Avedon and Quinn, which is always a bad shortcut. When they're not bickering, they're training shirtlessly in the desert. Yay. Proving that the movie is straight-up racist, instead of dying by knife-throws like everybody else, when they kill a Native American, they throw a tomahawk at his head. Presumably they don't know the meaning of the word "subtlety". You don't need to prove a cultural point with your choice of weaponry.

Despite the presence of an automated tank that looks like it has a smiley face, Deadly Ransom just doesn't engage the audience. Is it really even that different from Mike Norris extravaganza Survival Game (1987) - just another Kidnap Slog? Sadly the answer is no, and it's hard to imagine video store patrons consciously choosing Deadly Ransom at their local video store in 1998, or at any other time. Even the great Brion James can't save it, and that's not a good sign. It all feels kind of junky and trivial, and really shouldn't go on anybody's must-see list.

Dull Ransom
hwg1957-102-26570426 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A banker and his daughter are kidnapped. The daughter's partner who happens to be a SEAL or something similar is tasked to rescue them. There are a few twists and turns on the way but it is not that exciting, with standard action and flat direction. Loren Avedon makes a dull hero and scenes of him looking soulful are comic more than moving. He is also supposed to be psychic but nothing is made of that.

It does however have Brion James as Bobby Rico who is watchably entertaining as the villain and Francesco Quinn as the CIA man helping Avedon and who is much more interesting. It would have been better to have him as the hero instead of Loren. Sidney S. Liufau gives a hilariously over the top performance as another villain.

And what was with the strange tank? That seemed to come from another film. All in all pretty average.

If you like chopsockey movies, check out Deadly Ransom.

If you like chopsockey movies, Deadly Ransom is for you. The fighting, gunplay, death and violence are endless and quite entertaining if you like this kind of action (and most of the male ,12-39 demographic just loves it) then buy this DVD baby off the web for 15 bucks. The late Brion James plays a delicious villain as the cocaine snorting Bobby Rico. The best part of this film was the strong performance delivered by Lisa Crosato who plays the beautiful kidnapped rich girl. Although the plot is paper thin, Crosato manages to bring depth and believability to her portrayal. Loren Avedon handles the action but should probably be sent to actors jail for twenty to life. Although this isn't academy award stuff, it's still fun to watch.

Terrible Movie, Don't waste your time.
hickshicks247 July 2000
I have seen some BAD movies in my time. Most of em I can dismiss as a good time cause it's all about gettin togetha with some buddies and having a good time or a good laugh. This is not one of those cases. This movie was so utterly lame that I feel violated by watching it. Absolutely nothing redeeming in it at all. (Believe me I searched long and hard to find something) Do yourself a favour and let this one rot on the shelf along with Operation Golden Phoenix.

Do yourselves a favour and don't rent this one!!!!!!!

Do yourselves a favour and don't rent this one. Not so much for the 5 bucks you'll be wasting but for the 84min of your lives that you'll never get back. This movie is sooooooooo horrendous that it will leave you in a state of shock at the crap that you have just witnessed. This is one of those movies that makes you wish IMDB had negatives in their rating system. I for one will be emailing Avedon and asking for my $5 back. And to do me and everyone else a favour and not make any more movies. He makes Olivier Gruner look like an Oscar contender.

A fun shoot 'em up rescue movie with a different story
sunsetbob20048 May 2004
This is a real fun action movie with a very interesting story. It has lots of action but at the same time humor is sprinkled throughout so that it never takes itself too seriously like most of these type low budget action adventure films. Francesco Quinn is really good in the role of the sidekick to the lead actor Loren Avedon. He provides the comic relief to the weak acting of Avedon and steals every scene they have together which in itself is fun to watch. Brion James is also great as the comic book style instigator of all the twists and turns that occur throughout this very well written script that holds your interest from beginning to the surprises at the ending. There is only one female lead in this movie played by Lisa Crosato. She is also very good and I'd like to see more of her. Over all, in my opinion, I would recommend this movie as a good rental for an entertaining evening. It does not look like a low budget film in the production values just like the other film, "Dead Man's Run," I saw by this writer/director, Robert J. Hyatt. He seems to be able to take low budgets and make good looking quality films. At least with the two that I have seen.

An entertaining action-rescue movie with a different twist
tigarjames21 April 2004
I saw this movie on DVD and for a low budget film it had a big budget look with really good photography and interesting locations. The story was very well written and full of surprises as it unfolds. The weakest link in the chain, however, is the lead actor Loren Avedon, but he is shored up by really good performances from Francesco Quinn as a humorous side-kick who can also kick some ass although he is always needing to be rescued and the late Brion James who also adds humor to the action. Lisa Crosato as the fiancee who needs to be rescued by Avedon is solid and very attractive in a wholesome girl-next-door way. When all the action attempts by Avedon and Quinn seem to be failing, Avedon has to rely on his ESP gift to locate his loved one and save her. When she is found the surprises start to unfold one after another to make it a very clever script that is well directed. If you like independent action films with good villians, you'll like this one.

A really fun, slam-bang action movie
jerrypadden200430 April 2004
I'm an independent film buff and I saw another film by this writer/director, Robert J. Hyatt, called "Dead Man's Run" and I liked it so much that I sought out more of his films and found this one. Once again it has a very interesting story for a low-budget action movie with great characters played by very talented actors. Sidney Liufau is a very original and great bad guy. Brion James and Francesco Quinn, son of the legendary Anthony Quinn, bring humor to this really fun, slam-bang action movie. The lead actor, Loren Avedon, is not up to his role and if it was not for him this film would have probably gotten a lot more recognition. But, the rest of the cast overwhelms him and carries the day. Lisa Crosato is very good as the only female lead in this strong supporting cast. It's a fun rental.

Pretty good, wish there was more action
tardigrade8120 February 2009
I bought this movie from amazon, and to my extent it was actually really good.... My only down fall for this movie would be that it had more action.... the last I would say 20 minutes was loaded with action and that is about it, through the course of the movie there was some short action scenes but not much. Definitely not Loren Avedons best, I would say No Retreat No Surrender 2 was his best, but this is still a good martial arts rescue me movie.

It depends what kind of movies your into. The people that would say this movie is horrible, are those of which who are only entertained by todays films such as Rush Hour maybe, or Ong Bak, District b13 etc etc.... its not a bad thing... to each their own, however if you are a fan of Loren Avedon and older martial arts movies... although its not super old, I think 10 or 11 years old... Then rent this movie, it is very enjoyable especially if you are a Loren Avedon fan

Loren Avedon shines again
bad_habitt24 November 2005
This film was awesome. I had no idea what to expect after ordering a copy of it on ebay but it really surprised me. It featured a very solid story and writing as well as some very nice shooting on location. Loren Avedon provides some great humorous moments and pulls off the twist in the film wonderfully which what really makes it work. If it wasn't for Avedon's positively surreal acting and chemistry with the great Brion James (Tango and Cash), I don't think this film would have really reached its full potential. Brion also plays a wonderful villain that's continuously wired on coke throughout the entire film even though he's the mastermind of the whole 'bad guy' operation.

Great stuff.
