A bright musical gem
Peter_Young14 September 2015
Dil To Pagal Hai is a wonderfully made movie - entertaining, impressive and romantic. I appreciate the fact that Chopra kept updating his style with every new film. This is one film in which the songs are mostly a part of the storyline and the movie can be rightly described as a romantic musical, and not just because it's Bollywood. Where the music goes, Uttam's soundtrack is totally excellent, but more than anything the way in which the songs are presented is exemplary. This film actually bears the stamp of Hindi cinema's immense talent in making musicals. No one can do it better, and that's not about the choreography or the technical brilliance, it's more about the soul. The numbers are evidently very well invested (the foremost example being the very first song, "Le Gayee", which is a part of the show and a great opening), spectacularly danced and are really fun to watch, but there's something else in there, a kind of charm that is hard to explain in words.

Dil To Pagal Hai indulges in its romanticism but what I found great about it is its totally realistic portrayal of young artists. Chopra strikes an amazing balance between contemporary culture and poetic romanticism. While some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy, most of it is actually very real and has some sense of everyday reality. Chopra portrays the troupe of Shahrukh as a totally modern one, while the character of Madhuri and her soft romantic nature is actually deprecated even by some of the characters in the film itself. But the whole theory of the film, which tries to convey a message that somewhere someone is made for you, is quite interesting and inspiring despite its cheesiness. The film is never overly melodramatic or gushing in its emotional quotient. It tries to present itself as a simple love story, which does not work with a larger-than-life story but rather an episode in which true romance comes in the middle of happy-go-lucky, hardly-romantic people.

The story itself may actually be one of the film's weakest links, but the script and the execution, along with the technical brilliance and the soul which the director injects it with, elevate the picture to an altogether different level. Yash Chopra should be remembered for his ability to make a film with a stale story and yet infuse it with new-found energy. He, in a way, proved at that time that one need not make a sobby melodrama in order to make a good film. Dil To Pagal Hai is high on production values - the art direction is fantastic, and the cinematography is very good. As mentioned above, the songs actually work well with the film's story because it is about dancers. My favourite dance performance which is also one of my favourite moments in the film is the "Dance of Envy" between Madhuri and Karisma, which is astonishingly gripping and reminiscent of Sridevi's amazing "Moments of Rage" number from Chopra's Lamhe, and here too there's a certain psychological tension which is very well handled.

Where acting goes, Madhuri Dixit is the perfect Hindi film heroine - beautiful, gentle, charming and a stupendous dancer. Here she is wonderful as Pooja, proving you don't have to cry buckets and scream ceaselessly to deliver a completely good performance. She's dreamy and innocent, and there's something genuinely sincere about the way she delivers many of her clichéd dialogues, which could have easily made any other actress look cheesy and embarrassing. Shahrukh Khan is excellent and typically energetic. Yes, this is not a Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa or a Dil Se in which he had rich, complex roles, but his character is very good within the parameters of this film, and he is thoroughly convincing. Akshay Kumar in what, sadly, is one of his best roles at that time, is very efficient and suitably restrained. Yet, without a doubt, the show is totally stolen by Karisma Kapoor in a brilliantly self-assured performance full of passion and emotional commitment. She is totally there, expressive, heartfelt, and extremely impressive in her dance numbers.

I know many disagree with me on this one (for all I care), but I think it deserves great praise for handling a cheesy subject with sophistication and style. Dil To Pagal Hai is classic Bollywood entertainment - lighthearted, positive, and with a slight touch of a new India which must have been very refreshing for those times. Personally I may be a little biased since it does hold some nostalgic value for me, but even watching it today I loved the spectacular numbers, the melodious songs (long live Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and the whole team of wonderful playback singers assigned to the brilliant soundtrack), the modern characters and even the love story which is efficiently incorporated into the stage shows, showing how art imitates life and vice versa within the film.

reality about dancers' life
AidaEpi6 March 2001
I first saw the film in 1998, and I was never tired of seeing the film again and again. Karishma Kapoor as Nisha gave a first rate performance even though she played second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit (Pooja). The story revolves around the life of dancers. Nisha and Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) are best friends. Unknown to Rahul, Nisha secretly loved him. Pooja came into the scene after Nisha accidentally slipped her foot during dancing practice for Rahul's next production drama entitled Maya. Desperate to search for Nisha's replacement, Rahul saw Pooja dancing in the studio. Pooja eventually replaced Nisha. During the production, Pooja and Rahul feel in love. Problem came early, since Pooja was engaged to marry Ajay (Akshay Kumar). The story is aim towards loving couples questioning about their own love to each other. Watch for the dancing steps of Karishma and Shahrukh, both were highly praised in the film for such energetic dance numbers.

songs made my heart go crazy
fredberglyle26 June 2014
First of all, this is a commercial bollywood movie and so if you looking for a classy-art-flick then this ain't for you. The songs are very good and can't choose a single best one as they all are. The choreography dance sequence between Lolo and Maduri is something to look for. The camera-work is an eye candy and of course the movie sets. Lolo's role was memorable and no wonder she was presented the silver lotus. Madhuri was pleasing with her beautiful dance steps and of course with her smile. SRK (one of the best entertainer) will keep you charmed throughout the movie. I loved the theme that has such beautiful message. AK was well supportive with his screen presence. . The few sentimental scenes near the climax were annoying and director could've edited it out and the movie could've been made shorter at least by half an hour.

fantastic film,my all time favourite
sheesabidi26 April 2006
Dil to pagal hai is a fantastic film. Its my all time favorite.I like the films directed by Mr. Yash Chopra and among them its the best one. Since the year it released i.e. 1997 no other film has been like this to me till now. My extreme liking for DTPH is because of following reasons.. ->Its tag line i.e someone somewhere...is made for you. ->Its story line and Yash Chopra's perfection as a director. ->Its superb music by Uttam Singh and Lata Mangeshkar's melodious duets with Udit Narayan.I love its songs; and Lata's voice seems to be fresher(even more than old songs of her) ->Uttam singh's background instruments rock whenever i listen to the numbers. ->Shahrukh Khan's first performance in which he did not stammer and did not deliver dialogs in the way like he earlier used to.He was very serious and his acting was quite, calm and mature. For the same reason he got several awards for this film. ->Madhuri's performance was great and so was of Karisma. Both got awards and Karisma also got a well deserved Rashtriya Puraskar(National Award). ->I love its screenplay specially in the scenes having an acting stage within the film.(See its climax to confirm what i said.) MUST SEE IT AFTER READING MY COMMENTS IF YOU ARE NOT AGREE WITH ME.

Wow!

This is the first mainstream Bollywood film I've ever seen and I loved it! And I don't even like musicals! The part that got to me was the romance. I've always been a dreamer and I'm a sucker for the stuff in this film.

I also liked much of the dancing. It was more modern and Western than I expected. I'm anything but a dance connoisseur, but I preferred the stuff in this film to Alvin Ailey by a longshot. I'm looking forward to watching more Bollywood films now, though the selection of them with English subtitles is less than I would like.

Hummable Dance numbers will charm you in this simple Bollywood musical romance. All three main leads are good. However the plot is wafer thin and the film too long.

Watchable

Beautiful
dia_deewani31 January 2002
The moivie is very nice, and wonderful work. Nice story and nice way to show that love does exists some where for every one. I hope there is someone for me too like Rahul. The movie title is good too, and the characters are really unique. The characters that Yash Chopra is trying ot show us do exist in real world, and we all look for the 'certain someone' for us just as Mathuri (Pooja) does. We do find the perfect match for us but it's up to us to figure it out if they are really the person that god made for us. Good movie, and nice songs.

a sweet breeze of 90s romance......
SumanShakya15 September 2015
90s was the time I started to understand movies and still I can name movies from the decade which I don't get tired of watching umpteenth of times like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhaniyan Le Jayenge, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Don't know why I missed Dil To Pagal Hai, which I got to watch after 18 years of release. Just like the movies I've named earlier, this one is also to be cherished for the sheer beauty it perpetuates in the screen through the visuals, pose costumes, music, songs, and dances, which are so mesmerizing that you crave more of them in the movie. Perhaps this is the charismatic direction of legend Yash Chopra, which he has continued in his numerous movies.

Story-wise, the film is a bit off beat from a regular romance. It deals with the confusion in commitment, friendship, love, and couples made in heaven, in which our four main protagonists are entwined which has been beautifully resolved by the end. At the beginning, the film seems to lack a substance in its story which gets compensated pretty soon. The weakness of the film is its inability to develop the character artists in the backdrop. Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit deliver good performances, for which they got the awards of the year. They have performed better in many movies, but it's Karishma Kapoor who performs significant compared to her other movies. Akshay Kumar appears a bit weary and doesn't offer more than a guest appearance. Had the story carried a bit of substance to its glossy look, the film could have found a better height.

This film is a real piece of art
husust26 October 2005
Is there someone made for you ? If you don't believe in this yet, you better watch this film.It takes place on a theater stage, where the play and the reality mix up to show the genius of the director. Honestly, it is one of the best Indian films (of witch I am actually a fan)that I saw. Trust me, you will love the music, the dance, and many other things. But most of all, you will change your opinion about a great thing called : LOVE . You will have answers on questions about the borders between friendship and love .. I will not say more than one statement : if you didn't see the film yet you can't be a fan of love stories. This film is worth some hours from you life , so try to see it today ..

Pathetic !!! Feeble !!! Shabby !!!
Asphyxiod30 June 2005
SPOILER : I hate to waste any more of my personal time to write a comment for this horrible film. But if this comment is read by any aspiring viewer, shall at least be saved from spending three dreadful hours of his life.

One of the finest Director of India suddenly presents us his worst offering. Sadly this film is so shocking & horrific, that I cannot describe my foretasted feelings while leaving the cinema hall.

The movie revolves around a Drummer & utterly butterly romantic-girl-flattering-lover boy Shahrukh Khan who doesn't want to bingle with Karisma Kapoor who inturn is in deep love with the former, while the new girl in their block, Madhuri pulsates for Shahrukh with vice versa fashion, finally to see Akshay kumar's future love-life flattered by witnessing the twosome's emotional bond.

So we have the biggest ludicrous dialog put on air "Hey, He is just a friend, I never loved him", "She is just a friend", "I never saw him from love angle" .............................. CAN A BOY & A GIRL BE BEST FRIENDS, HEY CAN TWO BEST FRIENDS FALL IN LOVE .................................. STOP IT !!!! STOP IT !!!! for god's sake this concept sucks.

So these 3 characters keep revolving round & round. The script writer must have written the film in less than 3 hours.

Perhaps this Film is the most senseless movie ever made in Indian cinema history.

Done by Yash Chopra
Prea24 February 2005
This film has reached expectations beyond belief and it is no surprise that Dil Tu Pagal Hai was done by none other than Yash Chopra. I'm into musicals and romances, which was probably why I adore this film and is the best. The performances were phenomenal, but that is no surprise coming from stars such as Shah Rukh Khan who is the 'Baadshah' of Bollywood (plus i recommend you watch Veer-Zaara - that film I think surpasses this one in some scenes). Madhuri Dixit had come back again in this film after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun... and to me she is the best dancer and actress I have ever seen in Bollywood. Karisma Kapoor was exceptional as Nisha in the film and I think no one else could have done her role better as the modern Indian girl - though now it is seen in practically all Yash Raj films (e.g. Mujhse Dosti Karogi). Watch the film and hopefully you'll love it as much as me.

Melody love drama
Quirk4711 July 2020
Its more like a musical film . The songs are everywhere. And the final play is just outstanding. Sharukh's excellent performance as Rahul. Madhuri is impressive in second half ! The story is all about finding a right partner for ur rest of life. Akshay did a cameo appearance. He is neat. And karishma Is good. Songs are too good as well as dances. Of course there r two dancing dolls. Finding love is not important, choosing the right partner for love is more important.

Could have been awful but saved by Karishma
akshayashiv31 October 2008
This movie in my opinion was waste of time. The movie was too confusing and too hard and confusing. It has no romance. It was supposed to be a love triangle but it is not.The theme means there is some one for every one which is too un real and fake.Yash gives a terrible recipe for delight.Everthy thing is bad.The movie could have been fine if it not for the amateurish dialogs, screenplay and dialogs.Screenplay is confusing and is dull.Direction is mediocre.Dialogs are dull and tacky.Editiong is okay.Sound is good

Really the movie was not an absolute waste of time.It is watchable for Karishmas act.She dominates the movie from start to end(sorry Shah Rukh ).She is a complete scene stealer with a well deserved national award. She is pretty annoying at times.I could relate to her character in her skits. She is one great actress that should really come back and mainly should teacher her sister how to act.Shah Rukh Khan is amateurish. It is shocking to see that a man which gave one of the better performances that year with Pardes comes back with this trash.Madhuri looks stunning and thats it.But she does look great playing a show piece.Akshay barely has a role but still acts well and leaves a mark.Farida Jalal and Aruna Irani barely have a role

Songs are good. The filming is good.Technically the movie is superb.Camera work is flawless.Sets are looking stylish as ever and so are the locations

This is watchable just for Karishma and the songs

Movie of movies
khurram-312 January 1999
It is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. The acting of Sahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karishma Kapoor is excellent. It has some excellent sequences and exquisite dance sequels. It's a very romantic and melodius movie. Karishma Kapoor is at her best in this movie. Every movie starring Khan is a hit but this one is the greatest hit ever made.

pleasant experience!
dino_director15 August 2006
Dil to pagal hai is a Yash Chopra Musical and one of the best romantic films so far.I has Shahrukh Khan(Rahul),Madhuri Dixit(Pooja) and Karishma Kapoor(Nisha) as the leading stars.

Shahrukh Khan(Rahul),is a super cool dude who, along with is group is into directing stage plays and dance performances,he does not understand how someone can spend their entire life with only one person. He is in search of "Maya"."Maya" according to him is someone who is very beautiful and anybody can fall in love with her anytime. She is someone who performs for the supreme master and works towards self actualization.

Karishma Kapoor(Nisha) who is a member of shahrukh's group in love with him.Shahrukh does not know it and considers her only a good and a close friend.Madhuri Madhuri Dixit(Pooja) believes in love hopes that she is going to find the man of her dreams one day.

One day Shahrukh Khan(Rahul)discovers "Maya" in Madhuri Dixit(Pooja) and slowly they fall in love with each other. The problem arises when Akshay Kumar(Ajay) a good friend of Madhuri Dixit(Pooja),falls in love with her and wants to marry her.She cannot refuse him as she feels indebted to Akshay Kumar's parents who raised her.It now up to her to make a decision.

Overall great movie with awesome music, the best ever I have heard!.No matter how many times I listen to the soundtrack I do not get bored.Mr. Yash Chopra has great musical senses and is undoubtedly, the king of romance.

Glorious Days of Yashraj Films
AvinashPatalay12 September 2009
One of the last movies coming from the Yashraj banner where quality stood sacrosanct. Every department exhibits the Yash Raj signature stamp over it. As usual Yash Raj takes a single theme and puts his heart and soul into it ensuring the audience feels and connects. With Dil Toh Paagal Hain he attempts to convey "Someone..... Somewhere..... is made for you" and it comes across poetically beautiful.

¤ SRK:: He hams to his very best, but guess what? It goes extremely well with the character of Rahul. Rightfully, he is very soul of DTPH.

¤ Madhuri Dixit:: The first-choice of "Darr" gets opportunity to work with Yashraj. She was spot-on in the character. And was absolutely gorgeous (special credits the costumes/ wardrobe department).

¤ Karishma:: Fantastic performance. Call it ill-fate or whatever, post- Yash raj practically every top-actress begins her journey towards exit.

¤ Akshay Kumar:: His cameo was supposed to be the surprise element which later on many copied. He was extremely raw in terms of performance but hey, he got the best song (the title song).

¤ Aruna Irani:: Another important cameo which was effectively incorporated into the storyline as an important cog-in-the-wheel. And she delivered the goods to the utmost satisfaction.

Music is one of the strong-points of DTPH. A couple of listens and they linger on for years to come. When it comes to Yashraj the lyrics from Anand Bakshi are a notch above the his usual. Playback from Lata was at its angelic best (and perhaps the last!). Costumes/ wardrobe were aesthetically beautiful. Manmohan Singh carries his signature style when it comes to DOP. Choreography was different from the Shiamak Davar group. Special mention is deserved for the story/ screenplay & dialogues.

Finally the best part was the opening credits which truly communicates the entire message of the movie - simply awesome. Hats off Yash-ji!

Fantastic!!!
Aparajeeta29 September 2006
I have seen this movie innumerable times. I am a huge fan of Madhuri Dixit and feel that this is her best movie by all standards. Some might contend that this honor should go to Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.Well, since I am on Madhuri's side, either ways,I am on the winning side. But in my opinion, Madhuri has looked her gorgeous best in this movie. Her talent is showcased to the helm in every moment that she is in the frame. The dreamy eyed lovelorn girl, could not have been portrayed with better panache and finesse than was done by her. The most amazing aspect of Madhuri in the movie was the freshness and innocence she brought to her character despite having been around for sometime.Truly the work of a genius. SRK and Karishma were excellent in their supporting roles. It is a beautiful story, well written and executed with a masterful elegance. I strongly recommend this movie to all moviegoers who, like me,are besotted by movie magic.

The House of Chopra Descends
akbarnali28 March 2006
Yash Chopra has oft been noted for his bold dramas, masterful characterizations, and resonating romances. Who, indeed, can forget the battle of wills between Amitabh and Shahi Kapoor in "Deewar", or the palatable devastation of Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan in "Silsila", or the magical majesty of Sridevi in the Rajasthani deserts of "Lamhe"? Chopra reached the pinnacle of creativity with "Lamhe" in 1991. The downward slump which followed was perhaps inevitable, but definitely regrettable. "Parampara" was intermittently enjoyable, thanks in large part to Aamir Khan. "Darr" had all the requisite ingredients for success, and is certainly his best film post-"Lamhe", but lacked the taut quality a thriller requires. Shah Rukh Khan was still engaged in quality roles at that point, and succeeded in stealing the limelight from Juhi Chawla who played the protagonist famously referred to as "K-K-K-Kiran".

But alas. If the house of Chopra had attempted different themes in "Kabhie Kabhi", "Silsila", "Waqt", "Deewar", "Chandni", "Lamhe", "Aaina", and "Darr", it failed to break any substantial artistic ground with the flossy and flaccid non-event called "Dil To Pagal Hai".

In fact, it is so glaringly insipid that one cannot compare it to the repertoire which bears the name Chopra. Its clear predecessor is another "film". One cannot help but draw parallels between DTPH and Sooraj Barjatya's heinously contrived Hindu Family Values farce "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun": both films are driven by their songs, costume changes, and familial uptopias. There is no story, no plot, and outside Karishma Kapoor's spraining her ankle, no significant occurrence in the entire 180 minutes. There is little-if any-depth to the characters. Ms. Dixit is present in both, playing the same girl with different names, who is burdened with a unique form of arrested mental development in which she suffocates her own desire in deference to the will of her extended family, who in both cases is eager to marry her off to her brother-in-law (Mohnish Bahl in HAHK) or her adoptive brother (Akshay Kumar in DTPH). A curious tipping of the hat to the idea of incest, indeed. Of course, fans of Ms. Dixit have seen her umpteen times before in potbolier love triangles: "Saajan", "Mohabbat", "Arzoo", "Dil Tera Aasiq", "HAHK", "Wajood", "Koyla", "Yaaraana", "Rajkumar", "Khal-Nayak", "Sahibaan", "Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam", etc., etc., etc. Perhaps she was unaware that other types of films existed, or that embodying misogynistic feminine ideals, sucking limes, and swishing her dupatta endlessly does not qualify as "acting".

Shah Rukh is little better off with a half-baked and half-acted performance that has all the excitement of a dull thud. DTPH probably also marks the beginning of the descent of SRK's status as an actor. The joyous heights of "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa", "Baazigar", and "Raju Bangaya Gentleman" are all distant memories. He had officially resigned his screen persona to the nondescript romantic hero "Raj/Rahul" who has since been seen in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Mohobbatein", "Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham", and of course, "Veer Zaara".

DTPH belongs, in all of miniscule relevance, to Karishma Kapoor. She is the only example of intelligence or artistry in the film, stealing each and every scene in which she appears, and garnering a well-deserved National Award. It is interesting that virtually every other leading actress in India at the time, including Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Raveena Tandon, Tabu, and even Kajol had rejected the role because it was deemed too insubstantial. Indeed, it is the *ONLY* thing that is substantial in this attempt to one-up the hacked-up and hackneyed "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun!"

Superb !
shivcs22 November 1999
This is easily the best movie of Shah Rukh. I have lost track of the number of times I have watched it. ShahRukh, Madhuri and Karishma have given beautiful performances. The concept, the idea behind the movie is just wonderful, and the credit goes to Yash Chopra. It is another, of his many masterpieces. He specializes in Multi-angle Romances, and he is very good at it.

Altogether, it is one great movie.

Good Love Story? COME ON!!
manueljoseu21 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is among the crappiest movies I have ever seen. It is unbelievably long, unbelievably stupid and unbelievably devoid of any kind of story line at all. I believe, I went into deep sleep twice or thrice during the movie. This is NOT the face of Indian cinema. This is the 'marketed' face of Indian cinema. Dil To Pagal Hai is like a 100 Indian television soap operas stitched together. Dil To Pagal Hai is an eyewash, a shame to the original cinema.

It is a superficially hyped movie, with 'King' Khan doing the lead role. Sharugh Khan is an entertainer at best. He don't know the first letter of acting. He is superficially over rated(to put it lightly), just like his films. You should see his acting in emotional scenes, I always felt like, he is some kind of an epilepsy patient. He does strange things with his face whenever there is an emotional scene and that is not called acting, that is overacting.

A big thumbs down to all those who felt this movie was 'great'. Sorry for my language, but I can't help it.

overlong and sluggishly paced musical, but with very melodious songs
long-ford1 February 2009
This film is a pleasant watch at least for fans of long Bollywood romances. Directed by Yash Chopra, its basically a long love triangle between Shahrukh, Karishma and Madhuri, with a brief cameo appearance by Akshay Kumar. The songs make the movie. They are melodious and well choreographed, specially the competition between Karishma and Madhuri. The main drawback - an overlong plot and sluggish pace in the second half. The film wants to be a feel-good romance complete with flowers and chocolates but it outstays its welcome by at least half an hour. Watchable on DVD/television.

Overall 6/10

Probably Yash Chopra's best movie with Shahrukh Khan
IndrajitGhosh21 January 2013
What can I say? This film was excellent. It has everything a Hindi film needs to be a success.

On top of everything, there are three things which I feel made Dil To Pagal Hai a great movie. Firstly, it has a huge star cast (other than the Baadshah himself, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor - both of whom have an outstanding chemistry with Shahrukh). Secondly, it has amazing songs (the best one for me has got to be Dholna). Most of all though, I think although the film is your average Hindi film (i.e. a love story), I believe it is a love story with an important message - the message it tries to portray is that there is somebody out there for everyone and people need to find their soulmates. I think this is evident from the tagline "Someone, somewhere is made for you." Yash Chopra was by far the greatest director of Hindi cinema. I have watched many of his films (e.g. Veer Zaara, Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila etc) and I have to say that I can never be bored of watching them again and again. However, I have to say that DTPH is probably the Yash Chopra film I have watched over 50 times, it is an awesome film.

Are the pairs really made in heaven ?
jmathur_swayamprabha22 June 2012
I can find the reason behind the criticism of this movie out from a more than two decades old interview of an international female Tennis player - Mary Joe Fernandez. I had read her interview in 1990 in which she had asserted - 'When you are habituated to excel, just being good never satisfies.' I apply her quote her for the director of this movie - Yash Chopra who had directed several admirable movies in the past and built a reputation for himself as a maker of high quality cinema. Hence, the viewers of Dil To Paagal Hai compared this movie with his previous better works and the dissatisfaction that had emerged out of the high expectations from this movie, led to its criticism.

Dil To Paagal Hai (the heart is insane) is a love-triangle of a theatre-group leader - Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), his co-worker and friend - Nisha (Karishma Kapoor) and Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) who is an orphan fostered by a benevolent family and who happens to join his group just for the sake of one play in which Nisha could not partake due to her leg injury. The son of her fostering couple - Ajay (Akshay Kumar) loves Pooja and proposes to her and Pooja being burdened by the obligations of her guardians, agrees to marry their son. But there is one thing peculiar about her. She firmly believes that pairs are made in heaven, God has fixed the matches of the males and the females of this world even before their taking birth and now it's up to them to locate their matches and get united with them. The foundation of this general belief of hers leads to a specific dream for herself in which she sees her prince-charming approaching her like a fairytale and taking her away with him. How her belief comes true after several twists in this sentimental (and musical) love-triangle is the climax.

This movie was also criticized for the superstitions like male-female pairs being made in heaven, a girl's meeting her dream-boy on the full-moon night falling on the Valentine's Day etc. Well, has there even been any dearth of superstitions being propagated and strengthened through movies in India ? Then why to criticize this movie in particular. Just because Yash Chopra directed it ? Not fair. The filmmaker has only shown how strongly Pooja believed in her dreams. And if you read the Law of Attraction as well as about the power of man's subconscious mind spelled out by many philosophers, you have to be convinced that thoughts and beliefs actually get materialized if they are strongly founded in the concerned person's mind. I remember a dialogue from my favourite movie - Sangharsh (1999) told by the hero (Akshay Kumar) to the heroine (Preity Zinta) - 'Sapne Soch-Samajh Kar Dekhne Chaahiye, Sach Ho Jaate Hain' (it's better to dream sensibly because those dreams may come true). Hence if a girl's dream has come true which she sincerely believed in, what's the big deal ?

I have picked a very big yet quite subtle positive in this movie. In a couple of scenes, the theatre and the real life have been shown as getting intermingled. And both such scenes are damn impressive - one during the rehearsal of the play (titled as Maaya) and another during its actual staging which takes place in the climax. Yash Ji has presented these scenes in so skillfully that the viewer can only react as - WOW ! The cinematographer (Man Mohan Singh)and the art director (Sharmishtha Roy) have left no stone unturned to make the director's vision take a tangible shape. When you are under an impression that the characters are interacting in their real life, it turns out to be a scene of the play. Brilliant !

There are many scenes in which the emotional and drama quotient is quite high, true to Yash Ji's reputation. One is the informal dancing competition between Pooja and Nisha in which Nisha (out of her jealousy for Pooja) tries to belittle her in front of the group members including Rahul)watching their performance. Another illustration can be Nisha's outburst against the Almighty and throwing stones in the direction of the sky (where He is supposed to be).

Yash Chopra has been known as the King of Romance for the past many decades and Dil To Paagal Hai is a showcase of his natural talent to make high quality romantic movies. In the opening song which runs alongwith titles, he has shown several couples (of all shapes, sizes and ages) including himself and his wife (Paamela) which provides this movie a different look since the very outset.

Music is a very big plus point of this movie. Uttam Singh has composed the music of his lifetime using the lyrics of Anand Bakshi and the voices of Lata and Udit Naarayan for most of the songs. One song has been sung by Asha Bhonsle and one duet (referred to in the previous para) has been sung by Hariharan and Lata. All the songs are ear-soothing as well as heart-soothing.

Performances are good. Even Akshay Kumar who was known as an action hero those days, has done very well in his surprise package type role. In addition to Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, the supporting characters including Aruna Irani, Farida Jalaal, Deven Varma, Shivani Wazir, Balwinder Singh Suri etc. have also met the demands of their respective roles with perfection. The show stopper is Karishma Kapoor who won the national award for the best supporting actress for the role of Nisha.

The people who criticize this movie, overlook the quality of the product presented. It may be one notch below the lofty standard set by Yash Chopra for himself but overall, it's a nice movie with great musical appeal and immense repeat value.
