Not Baazigar SRK, it's Shikari Govinda
In 1993, the self-proclaimed Alfred Hitchcock(s) of Bollywood, i.e., director-duo Abbas-Mustan presented young romantic hero - Shah Rukh Khan who was till then considered a newcomer only in a very bold role which was not just some anti-hero kinda but something thitherto unseen and unheard in Bollywood. Why ? Because the hero was no different from any conventional villain, killing innocents to save his own skin and to achieve his goal (important personally for himself only). Bollywood had earlier seen anti-heroes but they were moral and conscientious. Despite being outlaws (or doing illegal things), they were definitely not so amoral as was the 'Baazigar' presented by Abbas-Mustan.

Baazigar (1993) which was an adaption of Ira Levin's novel A Kiss Before Dying was a huge box office hit and Shah Rukh Khan's courage to do such a role in the beginning years of his career as a hero was also appreciated. He also won the Filmfare Best Actor award for this role.

Years passed. One day, renowned film director N. Chandra who had directed quality movies like Ankush (1986), Pratighaat (1987) and Tezaab (1988) in the past; decided to make a movie on the lines of Baazigar and teamed up with popular hero Govinda for this purpose. Govinda who had started his career as a romantic hero, had become immensely popular for his comic timing during the nineties and delivered many hit comedies by then. Well, he decided to take a dive into the proposed risky project and accepted the risky role of the same kind of amoral hero (who is no better than a villain) as played by SRK in Baazigar. The result was Shikari (2000).

Shikari (hunter) begins with our (anti)hero's daredevil escape from jail after which he disguises himself as a middle-aged ugly man and travels from India to South Africa by Ship (on a fake passport, of course). In South Africa, he presents himself as a business tycoon Mahendra Prataap Singh (whereas actually he is Om Shrivastav) and becomes the rival of Virendra Singh Rawal (Nirmal Pandey) in the business of spices. On one stormy rainy night, he kills Virendra after revealing his true identity. He visits Virendra's home later on when his post-death rites are being performed in his real self and introduces himself to Virendra's mother (Sushma Seth), his widow Suman (Tabu) and his unmarried sister Rajeshwari (Karishma Kapoor) as his friend from India. Like Baazigar SRK, our Shikari Govinda also commits two more murders (of innocents) to hide his crime. Since he is an absconding prisoner, the concerned cop (Kiran Kumar) is on his trail. Besides, Rajeshwari starts her quest for her brother's murderer on one hand and falls in love with that very person on the other. She doesn't know that her widow sister-in-law Suman knows everything about the background of this murder (and also the murderer). Everything gets clarified and the narrative (which is now moving without any direction) is closed in a Baazigar like tragic climax.

First let's talk about the pluses of the movie. It's technically very good and the beginning 15-20 minutes including the introductory scene of Karishma Kapoor are simply awesome. I had seen this movie with my wife in the Chitralaya cinema of Boisar (Maharashtra) when it was released as I was serving at Tarapur Atomic Power Station those days which is situated at that place. It was a pleasure to see the thrills on the big screen (involving human-beings as well as a wild beast). Govinda's changing his face with the help of pieces of a mask may not be reliable but his face got entirely changed by that, is a fact. Even the audience might be finding it difficult to identify Govinda in that disguise. The scene involving the first (and the main) murder is also sensational.

Since, this movie is resting mainly on Govinda's shoulders only, he had to perform just very very well in the immensely challenging role which was stark contradiction to his popular image those days. And he has not disappointed. Though he did not win any award for his terrific performance in this role, it was really worth an award. His cruel looks when committing murders are simply hateful. But on the other hand, in the scene of his visiting the murder victim's household for condolence purpose, he has displayed his versatile acting skills which are simply adorable. That particular scene (with Govinda's dialogues in that) is very well written and that's why very impressive. Other actors are so-so. However (Late) Nirmal Pandey has delivered a praiseworthy performance.

The cinematographer has captured the beauty of Cape Town very well. Other technical aspects including the action and chase sequences are also okay. Editing is flawed but for that the script is to be held as culprit.

Musical score prepared by Aadesh Shrivastava is no match for the chartbusters prepared by Anu Malik for Baazigar. Only one song Bahut Khoobsurat Ghazal Likh Raha Hoon stands out in terms of both lyrics and composition (and also Kumar Sanu's rendition).

The main trouble of Shikari lies with its script only which is confused and is not able to explain many things properly in the end. Being a copycat is also no easy job as copying also requires some skill. N. Chandra tried to copy Baazigar but despite the best efforts of his principal artiste in the pivotal character, this Shikari of his fell flat on its face.

Shikari is interesting only in its first half. The post-interval session is a complete letdown. However, for diehard Govinda fans, it may prove to be a big treat as their favourite hero took risk to play a negative role in his heyday and excelled in that.

The movie was crap, the acting was great (may contain spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
This has to be one of the worst story lines ever for a movie. Although the story wasn't much, the performances in the movie were amazing, especially Govinda's and Tabu's.

It's not often you get to see Govinda in a negative role, and that is why his performance was so awesome. Who would have ever imagined Govinda as a psychopath.

And Tabu was great as usual, although she could have used more screen time.

Karisma Kapoor was the one who was wasted in the film, her character was down right annoying, what happened to you Karisma?

i am a big fan of karishma Kapoor and Govinda. I watched this film after i had seen Fiza, which was absolutley brilliant.

There are films that are bad, and there are films that are cr*p. but this film just takes the biscuit.

We were so annoyed that we were conned out of paying our money expecting a decent film.

avoid at all cost, dont even rent it.

The ratings are justified !
WorldMovie995 November 2020
First 30 minutes are a good attempt to cover the script but turned senseless. Then it progresses in thrilling way. Govinda in negative role is unexpected but still convincing. He is the show stealer who excelled as a decent citizen believing in constitutional policies on one hand and also as the revengeful cum obsessive lover turned psycho on the other hand. What an act !

See the film for Govinda and his deliverance of performances. His performance as the speaker in his enemies condolence day, wearing a white kurta is treat to watch. Karishma is also a character, reflecting the women of manly traits, who depicts both anger ridden and aggressiveness through various ups and downs in series of events. Tabu depicts a decent housewife who accepts her husband as husband irrespective of his immoral traits. The villain is righfully depicted, a passion motivated guy who can lie to society even to achieve his passionate desires. The plot is framed as a revenge story with a few twists of romantic tales. The comic scenes also feel unnecessary. It could have a great thriller if the spicy themes were eradicated from the film, rather focusing highly on realistic appeals. The climax is also justified, where the hero leaves his lover and finally the world for better, on fullfillment of his only purpose of living. A heart breaking ending but still haunting as a fearsome person.

The presentation is fast, lacks the mindfulness but still perfect in showcasing the psychotic cum inhumane episodes in the film. Though the film is a forerunner of Vadh but couldn't reach the total thrilling set up of Vadh as a thriller. Summing it was average in presenting the story. The story seems clear and understandable, actually due to Govinda. He alone tried to keep the spirit of the movie through his act. A 32/100 for him only. The ratings are felt kind of justified as a whole.

So Godawful, It's GENIUS!
akbarnali10 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Let me be frank: N. Chandra's "Shikari" is hands-down one of the all-time worst films ever made. To be fair, there is a story, there is plot, and there is character development. What there isn't is any sense of reality, suspense, or logic applied to this wannabe (and I use the term loosely) "thriller." That having been said, the film is so, so bad as a thriller that it's actually a brilliant comedy. Every scene which is supposed to be menacing, terrifying, or moving is hilariously, hysterically, uproariously funny. Govinda is a born comedian (repetitive though he may be) and it seems he just can't contain the inner clown. Watch the scene in which he "chooses" to drop Karishma down a large mud hole to (he hopes) her death. His method of deciding whether she lives or dies? Eenie meenie minie mo. And no, I'm not joking.

"Shikari" was supposed to have been to Govinda's career what "Baazigar" and "Darr" were to Shah Rukh Khan's: proof that he could excel as the anti-hero. For more reasons than can be listed here, the film is a flat-out failure, reinforcing the notion that Govinda is, first and last and even when he doesn't want to be, a comic.

Tabu and Karishma (both brilliant actresses in my book) have plenty to do, though their hopeful performances fail to counter the sheer stupidity of the film they are stuck in. Karishma is a fiery romantic in search of her brother's killer; Tabu the subdued sister-in-law who simply wants to escape. Tabu is the more straightforward love interest, though Karishma seems to get the more conventional heroine tasks (dancing, prancing, and torturing the hero).

Bottom line: this is a bad, bad, BAD movie- but the conviction of its leading man and the filmmaker's fidelity to an absurdity he seems entirely unconscious of make it a veritable (and entirely accidental) masterpiece of farce.

Watch it only for Govinda's acting
Movie's plot is crap, but I am giving 10 stars only for wonderful performance given by Govinda. It's sad to see he doesn't get any big movies now. He should work on his fitness and I have heard many people complaining about him arriving late at shooting sets ,he should become more punctual and try to pickup comedy movies or some psychotic villain roles. Only these roles suits him. He is definitely not meant for pure action or pure serious drama. And, I think he should be given come back chances in film industry. Best of Luck, Govinda!!!

Baazigar remade
shounak932524 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Criminally underrated as a bad remake of baazigar due to absolutely useless songs. But trust me this is the best performance of Govinda n shall remain so forever. Nirmal Pandey killing scene should achieve cult status by now. An amazing psychological thriller by N. Chandra who made a Stylish vengeance drama before Style. But i still dont know wat those idiotic songs wr doing in dis classic.

Ever-Greatest actor Govinda, Superb acting by Govinda.
prtmpl4 February 2021
Superb movie. This is called real actor who can play any role very very easily. When acting is defined by an actor then actor is called GOVINDA. Otherwise actors are defined by their acting. There is no comparison of Govinda. What an acting. Superb movie. No one can do acting like Govinda. Actors like Aamir, Shahrukh, Salman, Ajay, Suniel, Anil etc do good acting, But Govinda do best acting greatest acting. Acting is defined from Govinda. In presence of Govinda acting of other actors become overshadow. But this is not happen with any other actor. Like in Bade Miya chhote Miya Acting of Govinda completely overshadow Amitabh's acting. Similarly in every movie of Govinda. This is the reason why any actors fears to work with Govinda. Govinda is Great.
