Sometimes, this job can give you the honor and privilege of drawing attention to all kinds of underseen gems from the wide breadth of cinema that the world has to offer. Other times, you end up writing about a newly-announced schlock-fest of a movie described as, essentially, "John Wick" meets "A Christmas Carol." In either case, it's an undeniable win-win for me, your local /Film writer who absolutely lives for chaos.

In 2018, Charles Dickens’ classic novella “A Christmas Carol” turns 175, but its utility as a springboard for movie and TV adaptations shows no signs of slowing down. It’s a classic story of regret and redemption, and its lead character Ebenezer Scrooge offers an arc from misery and cruelty to love and kindness that’s catnip for any actor or actress. (I watched a sleighful of Scrooges for my book “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas” and am doing you the service of keeping the Barbie and “All Dogs Go to Heaven” versions off this list.) Here’s a look at...

“All my friends have worked with the Muppets. Everybody I know has done a thing with the Muppets and I always felt a little bit left out,” Michael Caine told Et in 1992 on the set of The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “But they only did half-hour television shows and I got to do a two-hour movie, so it's great.”
While Caine donned the trademark robes and night cap to portray Ebenezer Scrooge, the reimagining of the Charles Dickens classic also featured Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Fozzie as Mr. Fozziewig (modified from Fezziwig), Miss Piggy as Mrs. Cratchit and Gonzo as Dickens, who hilariously narrates the story with Rizzo the Rat. Despite the recognizable names and faces, some voices of the characters would sound a little different to Muppet fans.

He’s got debts, writer’s block, and a child on the way; a new film tells how Charles Dickens beat the odds to write everyone’s favourite Christmas story. Its star Dan Stevens reveals how he brought the writer to life
In the pecking order of Christmas stories, A Christmas Carol is second only to the baby Jesus. Even if you’ve never read it, or had it read to you, you know about that flinty-hearted miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his redemption during one long dark night of the soul.
Bill Murray, Albert Finney, Michael Caine and Alastair Sim have all played Scrooge in one of the endless film remakes and reboots there have been over the years. Now comes the story behind the story, The Man Who Invented Christmas: a heavily fictionalised biopic with Dan Stevens playing Charles Dickens, bashing out A Christmas Carol in six weeks...

The creator of Peaky Blinders, Stephen Knight, is teaming up with Tom Hardy to develop a new BBC series. The show is based on the work of Charles Dickens and it will adapt his classic stories.
According to THR, the first season of the series will start with A Christmas Carol. The classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge will be told in three hourlong episodes and Ridley Scott's Scott Free London production company will be producing.
Hardy and Knight have previously worked together on the shows on the shows Taboo and Peaky Blinders, so you can bet we are going to get another quality series! I assume we are going to get a very different, dark, and stylized version of this story than anything we've ever seen before. I wonder if we'll see Hardy in the role of Scrooge because that would be amazing!

As Les Standiford’s book would tell it, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) found himself in somewhat of a creative rut after a lengthy and expensive tour of America post-Oliver Twist. He had published three flops since buying a new London home in need of wholesale remodeling and began watching his pocketbook dwindle along with his confidence. It was as though the autumn of 1843 presented him a make or break moment wherein he wasn’t certain he would ever write again. And then inspiration struck with the voice of a new maid (Anna Murphy’s Tara) telling the children Irish ghost stories before bed. This idea of Christmas Eve providing a doorway of sorts to the spiritual world planted itself in Dickens’ mind. Soon after Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) was born.

Chicago – The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, as told in Charles Dicken’s classic “A Christmas Carol,” seems to be the one constant that survives the commercialization of the holiday season. The story of Scrooge’s creation is told with expressive sentimentality in “The Man Who Invented Christmas.”

Dan Stevens portrays the title character, that of Charles Dickens himself, and the film – directed by Bharat Nalluri (“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”), and adapted from a book by Les Standiford – is a scattered narrative between Dicken’s chaotic life in mid-19th Century Britain and his creative spirit in producing “A Christmas Carol.” Literature buffs will get a thrill as the characters spring to life as Dickens invents them, and they follow him around for the rest of the process, almost begging to be freed. Dan Stevens gives a frenetic performance as Charles Dickens racing to finish writing “A Christmas Carol” in time to publish before the holiday, in The Man Who Invented Christmas. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day), this film has all the Christmas color and Victorian period costumes and sets you could want in a Christmas film. The film is mostly a clever way to retell the famous tale, as characters spring from the author’s imagination while he struggles with his own family issues and races to meet a pre-Christmas release deadline, but it also touches on how his short novel transformed a once-minor holiday into the tradition we know today.

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s charm and wit in its fanciful depiction of the creative process, but the film downplays the social activism that Dickens fully embraced in his work. I’m “biast” (pro): love Dickens and A Christmas Carol
I’m “biast” (con): haven’t been the biggest fan of Dan Stevens
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Did Charles Dickens really invent our modern observance of Christmas? Well… he certainly contributed to it, with his beloved 1843 novella A Christmas Carol bringing to it a spirit of family celebration and togetherness and moving the holiday away from its religious grounding to a more secular one focused on ecumenical kindness and generosity. But we also have Prince Albert to thank, for importing his German Yuletide customs — such as evergreens and Christmas trees — to England when he married...

It’s only been a few short weeks since Winnie the Pooh got the “Shakespeare in Love” treatment in “Goodbye Christopher Robin” — a film that inspired this critic to lament that “we used to tell stories; now we just tell stories about how we used to tell stories” — which means that we’re already long overdue for another saccharine period fable about the creation of another literary icon. Enter Ebenezer Scrooge, who came to Charles Dickens at a moment when both men were at a low point in their lives.

Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol gets the sort of origin story normally reserved for superheroes in The Man Who Invented Christmas. Bharat Nalluri's whimsical comedy/drama wants to have its Christmas cake and eat it too by attempting to be both a (highly fictionalized) biographical portrait of Dickens and, simultaneously, a creative spin on the oft-dramatized tale. It doesn't fully succeed at either, but it does offer enough enjoyable Masterpiece Theater-style moments to entice Anglophiles and those who can never get enough of Ebenezer Scrooge.

In the original version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a bitter miser who hates Christmas. Let’s be real, though: Cranky old men are sooooo 1843. If one were to remake A Christmas Carol, it would make more sense for the protagonist to be an Internet commenter with a hateful streak. That’s exactly the idea behind “A Troll Carol”, a new holiday special produced by Maker Studios as part of the web series Casual Sketch.
A Troll Carol’s take on Scrooge is a lonely, goateed hater portrayed Mike McNeal. As he settles down for another night of flaming people in comment sections, he is haunted by an infamous troll named Jake Marley (Peter Gilroy). Marley presents Scrooge with the Internet trolls of past, present, and future, inviting him to see the errors of his ways.

A Christmas Carol is a weird fucking story. It’s about ghosts, death, rich assholes, sad poor people, and, eventually, the spirit of Christmas. It has been told an almost uncountable number of times, one of the easiest ways to make a special Christmas episode of anything. But somehow, it all clicks into place every time: Ebenezer Scrooge gets through the gauntlet of darkness and buys hams for the whole city, and you walk away full of Christmas cheer.
YouTuber Heath Waterman has celebrated those many, many iterations of Charles Dickens’ classic by editing 400 of them together into a single, coherent narrative. Questions asked in one rendition are answered by characters in another; one actor’s portrayal of Scrooge might fall from the sky, but a different one will land. Since the beats of the story are so consistent, everything unfolds cleanly.

A Christmas Carol, the time-honoured story from Charles Dickens, needs no introduction. First published in the mid 1800s, the supernatural Dickens parable is still very much a cornerstone of the festive season, and many can recite Ebenezer Scrooge’s encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come from memory. But what of the story behind the classic?
Coming off a string of literary duds, Charles Dickens was struggling to make ends meet before fleshing out A Christmas Carol in the space of six weeks, a comeback story that serves as the spine for Les Stanford’s 2008 non-fiction novel, The Man Who Invented Christmas.
It’s now being packaged for the silver screen, according to Deadline, who reveal that Dan Stevens has landed the star role of the young Charles Dickens, headlining a cast comprised of Christopher Plummer and Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce. They’ll play Scrooge and Dickens Sr.

The Man Who Invented Christmas will star Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens, depicting the birth of A Christmas Carol.
The to-do list of Dan Stevens continues to grow. The actor, who will notably become the CGI/live-action realisation of a certain hairy hunk to Emma Watson’s Belle in 2017’s Beauty And The Beast, has just nabbed a movie in which he will play one of the 19th century’s most consequential authors.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Stevens has landed the lead role in a project called The Man Who Invented Christmas. In the film, Stevens will be playing Charles Dickens. The film will based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Les Standiford, which depicts a broke and dispirited Dickens in the Christmas of 1843 and his efforts to get A Christmas Carol published. "Capote" helmer Bennett Miller and "Shakespeare in Love" screenwriter Tom Stoppard are teaming for a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic fable "A Christmas Carol" for Annapurna Pictures.
Set in the 19th century like Dickens' 1843 novella, the story follows Ebenezer Scrooge and his redemptive Christmas Eve tour of the holiday past, present and future.
The story has been famously adapted for the screen countless times from the Bill Murray-led "Scrooged" to a Robert Zemeckis mo-cap adaptation to even an "Uncle Scrooge"-themed version.

After having been a holiday staple since 1843, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is returning to the big screen in the hands of director Bennett Miller and screenwriter Tom Stoppard. The classic tale about bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come is being developed for Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures. Ellison, Miller, Scott Rudin and Jennifer Fox will produce. Unlike Bill Murray‘s 1988 comedy “Scrooged,” the latest adaption will be a period piece set in the Dickensian era of the mid 19th century. I’m a big fan of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. I try to read it every Christmas, I watch multiple versions of it during the holiday season (including a half hour animated version starring Mister Magoo), and in my acting days I performed in the annual theater production of it at Chicago’s Goodman Theater. For the record, I played in the all-important parts of Mr. Lean, Fred’s friend number 3, dancing man, and ensemble.
Coming across a mystery called The Humbug Murders – An Ebenezer Scrooge Mystery by L.J. Oliver, I was quickly drawn in. Not without some hesitation; the notion of Dickens’ notorious miser acting as a detective rattled my chains a bit. Still, I decided to give it a chance.
For the most part, it works. L.J. Oliver is a pen name for Scott Ciencin and Elizabeth Wilson, both of whom are experienced authors. Sadly,...

Now that Halloween is out of the way (any candy left? mail it to us!) it's time to get serious about holiday programming. For some people "holiday" may suggest Christmas, but nobody puts Thanksgiving in the corner. The CW just released its list of upcoming holiday specials and they were wise enough to include one of the great T-Day comedy classics, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," as well as more wintry fare, including "Kung Fu Panda Holiday" and "Merry Madagascar."
Here's The CW holiday schedule:
Tuesday, November 24
"Greatest Holiday Commercials Countdown" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. Et)
A Celebration Of The Best Holiday Commercials From Around The World - Kevin Frazier ("Entertainment Tonight") and Keltie Knight ("The Insider") host this holiday celebration with a countdown of the 12 best holiday commercials ever - one for each of the 12 days of Christmas. There have been dozens of retelling of the story and other actors, including even Cicely Tyson, have played the lead character, so why not Ice Cube? He's just as good a choice as any. What I'm referring to is the news item, first reported by Deadline (Here), that Ice Cube has signed a deal to play Ebenezer Scrooge in a new updated version of Charles Dickens' immortal novel "A Christmas Carol", to be entitled "Humbug" for Universal Pictures. The studio won battle to acquire the script, against three other studios, written Todd R Jones and Earl Richey Jones, which was previously set up at Relativity until it went bankrupt a few months ago. Ice Cube will play Ebenezer Scrooge, the cantankerous holiday hater from A Christmas Carol, in Humbug, a contemporary retelling of the Charles Dickens classic directed by Tim Story, Deadline reports.
While the Scrooge of Humbug will be a wealthy real estate mogul rather than a banker, the story will remain otherwise unchanged. Scrooge will be visited by the three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, who will show him the error of his miserly ways and lead him to redemption.

Pity the actor who has to play Ebenezer Scrooge.
You have to go from convincingly nasty to convincingly nice, with convincingly terrified along the way. And while everyone is rooting for your conversion, the character is a lot more fun when he's dispensing bile and insulting wisecracks. Plus, there are the ghosts of Scrooges past, from TV and film, that everyone remembers and will measure you against.
Still, Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" is elastic enough to accommodate all kinds of Scrooges -- bitter and bemused, male and female, live-action, and animated. Here is an alphabetical list of 17 of the diverse Scrooges who've made an impression on the big or small screen.

Unforgiven won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1993. You know what didn't win? The Muppet Christmas Carol! For that, the Academy remains... unforgiven. (Nailed it.) The Muppet Christmas Carol isn't just a great holiday movie or a great Muppet movie; it's a great piece of classic American cinema. Michael Caine cries real, human tears multiple times, yells, screams, and gives a career-defining performance as Ebenezer Scrooge, and he does all of this while talking to Muppets. Sure Jim Henson wasn't around yet, but we have a feeling Charles Dickens' original intention for this legendary tale was for it to involve frogs, pigs, and whatever Gonzo is. Here's why we...

In Charles Dickens's immortal "A Christmas Carol," Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts: the ghost of Christmas present, the ghost of Christmas past, and the ghost of Christmas future. When it comes to Christmas movies, there are plenty of titles that you've watched in the past, a few that you watch now, and even less that you'd watch in the future. Somehow, this analogy made more sense before I downed several jumbo-sized cartons of egg-nog.
What we're trying to say is that there are Christmas classics, Christmas movies that you maybe watch if it's on television but don't think about, and then there are Christmas movies that have just aged horribly.
