Don Coscarelli perhaps does not get enough credit for crafting one of horror's most enduring franchises with "Phantasm." Dating back to the sleeper hit from 1979 that introduced audiences to Angus Scrimm's The Tall Man, the series pressed on for five films that premiered periodically all the way through 2016. Coscarelli directed the first four entries personally before handing the reins over to David Hartman for "Ravager". A segment in "V/H/S/99" even paid homage to "Phantasm." Not many franchises can say they got to five movies across nearly four decades.
But what of those who have never taken the plunge into this delightfully strange universe? What of those genre fans who are interested in seeing what Coscarelli dedicated so much of his life to? We're here to make it easy for you to do just that by providing the correct viewing order for the "Phantasm" movies, as well as...

The Phantasm family is back together again for the new brand new music video “Cheyenne,” which comes courtesy of Phantasm star Bill Thornbury and his band Remington Ridge.
Bill Thornbury played Jody in the original horror classic from 1979, a role he reprised for Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead, Phantasm IV: Oblivion, and Phantasm: Ravager.
Of particular note for Phantasm fans, the music video for “Cheyenne” was directed by franchise creator Don Coscarelli and David Hartman, who directed Phantasm: Ravager.
Coscarelli tweets this afternoon, “Many people might remember Bill’s absolute banger of a song from the original Phantasm that he wrote and performed with Reggie Bannister in our film Phantasm… ‘Sitting’ Here At Midnight’! ‘Cheyenne’ is an emotional, rootsy country ballad, telling tales of lost love and fading sunset dreams.”
“It was great to get the Phantasm family back together to make this video,” Coscarelli adds. “The talented David...

Writer/director Don Coscarelli kicked off a mind-bending horror franchise with his low budget 1979 classic Phantasm, following that up with Phantasm II in 1988 and Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead in 1994. One Phantasm phan who thought they knew where the franchise should go next was Roger Avary – and soon after sharing an Academy Award win with Quentin Tarantino for co-writing the stories that made up Pulp Fiction, Avary started crafting a Phantasm sequel script he called Phantasm 1999. Coscarelli was impressed with what Avary had come up with, and set out to bring Phantasm 1999 to the screen… but it never happened. Nods to the ideas in that script made it into Phantasm: Oblivion and Phantasm: Ravager, but the budget required for Phantasm 1999 (which was also called Phantasm 2013 A.D. and Phantasm’s End as time went on) could never be secured. So find out about the Phantasm movie that never was...

Elvis has a lot of buzz this awards season, but Baz Luhrmann didn’t get the story right. The real Elvis Presley traded places with an impersonator in order to live a simple life as an impersonator himself before retiring to Mud Creek, Texas alongside John F. Kennedy, who was patched up and dyed Black after the assassination attempt.
Those are the facts according to Bubba Ho-Tep, at least.
The 2002 horror-comedy is based on the short story of the same name by Joe R. Lansdale (whose work would go on to be adapted into Cold in July and Hap and Leonard), first published in the 1994 anthology The King Is Dead: Tales of Elvis Post-Mortem. When cult filmmaker Don Coscarelli approached Lansdale about optioning the story for a film, the author tried to talk him out of it, as he believed it couldn’t be made.

Horror is making money hand over fist right now and you have to imagine that anyone with the rights to a beloved classic horror franchise might be looking at Danny McBride and David Gordon Green’s soft reboot/continuation of Halloween with envious eyes.
Speaking of which, in a Reddit Ama, McBride was asked which franchise he’d like to see back on the big screen and he picked a stone cold cult classic: Phantasm. For those not familiar with the series, it begins with Don Coscarelli’s 1979 original, in which evil undertaker the Tall Man is transforming Earth’s dead into dwarf zombies that will be sent to his planet and used for slave labour (it makes more sense in context!).
Despite landing to mixed reviews, time has been kind to its charms, with contemporary critics praising the film’s surreal narrative and imagery. It eventually did well enough to merit four sequels,...

Back in 1979, an up-and-coming filmmaker by the name of Don Coscarelli unleashed Phantasm, his terrifying and surreal exploration of fear, onto unsuspecting horror fans. Now, over 37 years later, we are about to celebrate the release of Phantasm: Ravager, the final installment of the iconic franchise that recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2016 Fantastic Fest. It’s a project that Phantasm fans have been waiting to see for a long time, and I have to say that by and large, longtime Phanatics should be absolutely pleased with how Ravager has turned out.
Co-writer/director David Hartman’s genuine passion for this franchise is engrained in every single moment of this sequel, which perfectly embodies the scrappy “can-do” attitude that has gotten the Phantasm series this far. The film is also a beautiful tribute to the legacy of the franchise’s villain, The Tall Man, portrayed by Angus Scrimm, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The terrifying Tall Man makes his creepy return in the trailer for long-awaited horror sequel Phantasm: Ravager...
One of horror cinema’s most unsung, yet influential franchises makes a return glistening with global devastation in Phantasm: Ravager. The trailer for the upcoming release of the belated fourth sequel of the Phantasm film franchise showcases an upgraded return for writer/director Don Coscarelli’s illusion-imbued cinematic shockfests.
The trailer for Phantasm: Ravager, the franchise’s first entry since 1998’s Phantasm IV: Oblivion, sticks to the tried and true, once again focusing on the series’ repertory ponytail-rocking protagonist in Reggie Bannister’s 'Reggie'. Apparently having spent the last 18 years wandering the Earth like Caine from Kung Fu, it seems that Reggie is ready for what is being billed as the final showdown between him and The Tall Man.

Well Go USA Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the North American rights for Don Coscarelli's "Phantasm" horror film series with ambitious re-release plans in the works.
The original 1979 cult classic Phantasm is scoring an all-new 4K restoration. It will be joined by never-before-seen HD restorations of 1994's "Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead" and 1998's "Phantasm IV: Oblivion".
They will joined by the debut of the fifth and final film in the series, 2016's "Phantasm: Ravager". All four films will be made available in remastered, high-definition versions across all cable and digital platforms on October 7th. The remaster of the first film will get a limited theatrical re-release on September 24th, while 'Ravager' will have a day-and-date limited theatrical on October 7th.
A Blu-ray and DVD Collector's Edition set will follow later this year. Sadly there's an obvious hole here, 1988's "Phantasm II," which isn't scoring a...

The Tall Man, Reggie “Hot As Love” Bannister, Jody, and the boooooooy are all coming back to theaters: Both the Bad Robot-funded restoration of the 1979 cult classic Phantasm:Remastered and the new sequel Phantasm: Ravager have official release dates, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Phantasm: Ravager has been seemingly floating around in a crimson-tinted alternate dimension since the first trailer was released in December of 2014, beating Lionsgate’s Blair Witch to the punch as far as surprise sequels go. Now Well Go USA Entertainment has picked up the distribution rights to the fifth Phantasm adventure, and will unleash Angus Scrimm’s final performance as The Tall Man onto theaters and home video on October 7. Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998)
Directed By: Don Coscarelli
Written By: Don Coscarelli
Starring: A. Michael Baldwin (Mike), Reggie Bannister (Reggie), Bill Thornbury (Jody), Angus Scrimm (The Tall Man / Jebediah Morningside), Heidi Marnhout (Jennifer), Bob Ivy (Demon Trooper)
“Now this won’t hurt a bit . . .well maybe a little bit.” What I assumed for many years as the final Phantasm film actually isn’t! This was the final installment for over a decade until a recent one was made and will be coming out at a future point. Without that notion in mind, this was a fairly good series finale for the movies while leaving plenty open for a sequel.
The fourth sequel takes place exactly where the third movie ended. Mike, after being partially turned by the Tall Man, is fleeing from the Tall Man entirely and trying to find out the origins of this mysterious man.

As a composer, I'm quick to acknowledge the role of music in setting the tone for a horror film, and while theme songs with lyrics and vocals can be just as effective as an instrumental score, there are definitely risks involved: along with clothing and hairstyles, songs tend to anchor a film to the year it was made, and as tastes change, a pop tune can be exposed as a quaint and silly relic of its decade. Then again, some of those tracks were pretty goofy to begin with, and nothing could have saved them. With that said, I love every one of these oddball themes to death (even the truly painful ones), so I'd like to share with you the best of the weirdest, straight from one of my more... uh, let's say “eccentric” party playlists. Let's rock! Fat Boys: “Are You Ready for Freddy?” (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,...

This summer will see plenty of comic book movies and assorted blockbusters, but for those who enjoy more genre fare, enter Into the Storm. Opening August 8, the movie follows the town of Silverton as its inhabitants attempt to survive the mother of all tornadoes. The "found footage" thriller stars The Walking Dead's Sarah Wayne Callies as a meteorologist who pairs with a storm chaser (Veep's Matt Walsh) in order to track tornado data. "It's a bit of a contentious marriage of convenience," Callies told USA Today.
Enter The Hobbit's Richard Armitage, who plays an assistant school principal in search of his son during the tornado onslaught. According to director Steven Quale (Final Destination 5), what "Gravity did to space, [Into the Storm] will do to natural phenomena and weather."
While that is quite a boast, Quale apparently got a vote of confidence from his mentor, James Cameron, who, according to the director,...

Director Don Coscarelli returns to his bizarre horror franchise with Phantasm V: Ravager. Here's the first trailer...
There's something comforting about the thought that, after 35 years, Don Coscarelli's still making Phantasm movies. The 1979 original established the director's warped yet thrilling universe, which featured an evil undertaker called the Tall Man, flying killer spheres and gateways to other dimensions.
Phantasm V: Ravager is the first film in the series since 1998's Phantasm IV: Oblivion, but once again stars series regulars Angus Scrimm (as the glowering Tall Man), Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury and Reggie Bannister.
Like the previous film, the budget's visibly low, but the same sense of the blackly comic and violently surreal is still in place. There's no word as to when Phantasm V is out in the UK, but when we hear more, we'll be sure to pass it along. In the...

Last year we wrote up a post highlighting 10 planned horror movie sequels that we're still waiting to see, and Phantasm 5 was one of the films that made the list. 1998 saw the release of Phantasm 4: Oblivion, and ever since then fans have been eager to see the continuing adventures of the Tall Man and his deadly silver spheres, with a fifth installment being the subject of endless rumors and discussions in recent years.
Franchise creator/director Don Coscarelli has remained tight-lipped about the future of Phantasm, and that future has been shrouded in uncertainty since the moment the credits rolled on Phantasm 4, and we were left off on a cliffhanger of an ending.
Today, the fog of uncertainty has been lifted...

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day, then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it's quite frankly a miracle so many movies actually do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize? There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror movie sequels that found themselves stuck in the dreaded Development Hell. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of the sequel to 2006's utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon... a follow-up that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to get off the ground. Described as a "spreemake," meaning a sequel, prequel...

About four months ago I reported that New Line Cinema had put the film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn’s graphic novel series Y: The Last Man on the top of their priority list, but a director was still nowhere in sight after numerous big names had come and gone. Well comic fans, it took a little bit of patience, but we can finally answer the question “Who will be bringing Yorick and his monkey companion to Hollywood?” and the answer is Dan Trachtenberg.
Wait, you don’t know Dan Trachtenberg, Key Grip on Phantasm IV: Oblivion?! It’s been fourteen years since Don Coscarelli last entered the mulit-dimension universe of flying spiked spheres, dwarves, and the Tall Man. Over the years, the Phantasm series has garnered a huge underground following among the horror community. Coscarelli may not be as spoken about as such directors as Romero or Carpenter, but he is certainly a legend in the horror community and one whose film projects continue to invigorate fans and critics alike. When was the last time you could say that about the other two directors I just mentioned? While making the rounds for his next film, the bizarre, drug fueled horror comedy John Dies At The End, Coscarelli sat down with Bloody-Disgusting to discuss his new film and address the rumors of a fifth film starring the incomparable Angus Scrimm. It sounds like the possibility of Phantasm V is now greater than ever. Rumors have always been...

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
The terror continued with a spoof of Paranormal Activity...

Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.
Saturday
After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).
Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.
As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal.

Of all of the horror franchises that never really made it, our absolute favorite was Phantasm. The low-budget series made its debut in 1979 with the original, written and directed by Don Coscarelli. The main villain of the four films is the macabre Tall Man, a supernatural undertaker who commands flying silver balls of death in a somewhat confusing quest to kill a bunch of people. His two main foes are Reggie and Mike, who start out as everyday dudes but evolve into something more complex over the course of the series. Phantasm IV was originally released theatrically in 1998, but Anchor Bay recently released an uncut edition of the film in response to rumors that Phantasm V is in production. So what’s all this about, then?...

Blogger Stacie Ponder's horror columns appear every Wednesday. This week Anchor Bay is re-releasing Phantasm IV: Oblivion, the final chapter in the saga pitting Jody, Mike, and Reggie against the mysterious Tall Man. Somehow, the Phantasm films have generally remained above the critical scorn fired at most horror sequels; it's quite possible that this is due to the fact that the reins have remained firmly in the hands of series creator...
Once again, there are only a handful of releases worthy of Qe endorsement this week, but the one's we do want, we really want. Like Sean Meredith's Dante's Inferno for instance, where "apocalyptic graphic novel artwork and eerie Victorian toy theater converge" to give birth to biting satire. Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro's long overdue Delicatessen: Special Edition is also out today as well. And how could we forget Anchor Bay's Phantasm IV: Oblivion disc? And what's this? A swanky new director's cut of Christophe Gans's The Brotherhood of the Wolf?! I haven't seen Botw in years, but after catching Silent Hill on Showcase a couple nights back (what a great flick) I'm interested in revisiting it for the lush visuals alone. You know the drill. Trailers and links after the break.
